Ever since you met Ushijima Wakatoshi in high school you knew he was going to be someone special in your life.

You actually met him by a friend in common, Tendo.

When he found out that you played for the “Shiratorizawa Female volleyball club” after being partners on a protect, he stuck by your side ever since. And it didn’t take him long to introduce you to his incredibly handsome and straightforward friend.

Of course you thought that he was stoic at first, everybody does... But Tendo knew exactly what he was doing.

Your friendly and outgoing personality made it easier for you two to be friends and eventually a couple.

Wakatoshi actually has a very tender personality, of course it took time for you to bond and trust each other but you eventually did and stared dating almos at the end of your second year of high school.

You knew he was a complete volleyball head so yo tried to take him out of his comfort zone the more you could. Going out in dates, taking the train to the city and go to watch a movie, sneaking to his dorm to make out and something a little bit more lewd in your last year of high school, you know, horny teenagers...

Even tough the first year after you graduated wasn’t easy, you manage to stay together and continue developing your relationship. You moved together, adopted a cat together, traveled together, got engaged and married.

But now, you two are getting ready for a different level challenge, you are expecting your first child together. After talking about it a lot, discussing if you could provide a child without a problem, which you could easily, you both tested your fertility and once you got a green flag, you started trying for a baby.

Ushijima definitely aimed correctly because one month later you got a positive result!

You remember perfectly... it was a Tuesday, your period was 5 days late and you just couldn’t deal with the anticipation, so you took a pregnancy test and as expected, POSITIVE. You cried your eyes out right there, sitting on the edge of the ofuro, so excited to tell Wakatoshi. You also took another test, just to make sure it wasn’t a false positive, spoiler... it wasn’t.

After taking some pictures of the tests, you got your car keys and drove to the closest mall in your area, you got to a baby shop and picked up a little beige onesie with elephants on it, along with a tiny hat.

While you were at the mall, you also got a little gift box and some groceries for you both... You drove back home and prepared the little surprise, the onesie and hat, along with the tests you took and a little Vabo-chan plushie, Wakatoshi gave you a while ago. You left the box on the kitchen counter and continued your day, waiting for your husband’s arrival.

Once he got home from practice that day, you played as cool as posible so he couldn’t figure it out.

“Remember that cool store we saw on downtown the other day?” you asked you husband once he was done changing into more comfortable clothes.

“The one with the cool decor? Yeah...”

“I went there and got something cool after I was done with the groceries! It’s in the white box, over there”

He spotted the box and grabbed it in his hands. You stopped what you were doing and looked at him without even blinking.

He opened the box and after he took a little moment to process, he took the onesie in his hand and looked at you with expecting eyes.

“Are you for real?” You nodded with a smile on your face “Oh my god, (Y/N)...” he walked towards you and embarrassed you in his arms “thank you...”

“We’re going to have a baby” You sobbed in his arm “everyone is gonna lose it” you both laughed...

You decided to wait past the first trimester for you to tell your friends and family, only to make sure baby was fine and healthy.

You told your mom and sister first, they were over the moon with the news. Then you told Wakatoshi’s parents, even tho his mom is super serious she was extremely happy and greatul for a grand child and you told his dad via face time, he was almost crying with the news.

You told your friends after that, starting with Satori, who was in town visiting from Paris, perfect timing huh?

He screamed and hugged you both, in complete joy for having a niece. And yes, he was sure you’ll be having a little girl.

If you see the big picture, all this was thanks to the old guess monster, he literally matched you up.

You also told your best friend, Akemi, which literally cried of joy. Finally you told the rest of your closest friends. And you shared a little post on a Instagram sharing the news with the world, short to say, everyone went nuts.

Soon enough you house was full with presents from friends, family and a bunch of brands.

You work as a publicly manager for the volleyball association and the company was kind enough to let you work both from home and attending the office.

So you would spend some days at home in company of yours and Wakatoshi’s cat, Mochi.

The first trimester was tough... You were super tired and sleepy which made work difficult and you were picky with the food but at least you weren’t feeling nauseous and throwing up.

But when you were having cravings your husband was ready to satisfied them.

He will arrive home with your favorite foods and dessert and was ready to pamper you all you wanted.

So for the las couple of months you two were super busy debating if you should move to a proper house or if you should stay in your current apartment. You ended up agreeing on staying in the apartments and later in move to a house of your own. So when you decided to stay in your apartment we started preparing baby’s room little by little.

You were currently starting your 5th month and Wakatoshi has been touchier than ever, not only with the belly but he says he finds you more gorgeous than ever with the pregnancy glow manifesting.

“Mmh...” you growled once again while Wakatoshi tried to hold your belly in the middle of the night “stop it.” You said while taking his hand off of you.

And it didn’t took long until he did it again

“Wakatoshi...” You squirm away from him but he just wouldn’t give up.

And that was for the time when you didn’t want to be all touchy and all... Horny pregnancy season was soon to arrive.

**PENULTIMATE SPOILERS BELOW**

I just posted a video with my live reactions to the chapter, but here are my highlights, because FURUDATE YOU MADMAN GENIUS. This chapter connected so much together. So, let’s do:

My Top 10 Thoughts on Haikyuu!! Chapter 401:

10. Of course. In true Furudate fashion, he has Kageyama block the spike from Hinata, BUT, what Kageyama doesn’t realize is all the training on the beach Shoyo has done to prepare for such a moment. And that heel kick! *swoons* Also, someone reacting to Season 4, Episode 9 of the anime, where Hinata kicks the ball back to himself called this happening all those months ago...Furudate is next level at foreshadowing. Not that we didn’t already know that.

9. Hey, remember how in the VERY FIRST chapter of Haikyuu!! Shoyo did this crazy run across the court to score? Yeah, Furudate knows we remember. And he pulls this -- and Kageyama’s beautiful reaction, only for --

-- Only for it to all be a DECOY. Kageyama, you made this monster, you know. I love that Shoyo has come all this way from wanting to score all the points to accepting that the decoy DOES have a vital role to play, and in this instance, it’s allowing Bokuto to score the winning point for the MSBY Black Jackals. Just look at that smile! And of course, Tanaka and Asahi KNOW the power of Hinata as a Decoy...because they’ve been in Bokuto’s shoes before. 

8. UGH, the aftermath of that moment is glorious, which will detail down below -- but I love Shoyo and Kageyama’s interaction, though. How they’re still keeping track of each other’s wins and losses, exhausting Miya, hilariously, and showing that they’re on equal footing now, after all these years. This chapter is just cementing the last several chapters’ worth of character development. 

7. ARE YOU SHIPPERS READY FOR YOUR FOOD?!

Because these next few pages were healing my shipper heart. I mean, yes, the Kagehina fanbase is raving right now, but let’s talk about THESE ships below, starting with:

Tsukishima x Yamaguchi:

So, Tsukishima, of course, is not sappy about any of this and just points out how the season’s just getting started (ready the fanfics, y’all). 

And of course, Yamaguchi wants to watch Tsuki play! Yachi says she’ll come too! I LOVE how just like he was with Akiteru, he doesn’t want them to come watch (even though we all know he’ll love it when they’re there). Now, some people have commented that Yamaguchi could be with Yachi, but y’all...Yachi is in Tokyo. Yamaguchi and Tsuki both live in Miyagi. I can’t wait for all the Sendai Frog/TsukiYama fanfics!

If you’re looking for an extra Kagehina crumble, just look at the end of this adorable exchange between Romero, smol adorable Rubens, and Shoyo (who perfectly crouches down to talk to him MY HEART I CAN’T), to see Kageyama notice that Shoyo can speak multiple languages...oh, honey! If only you know about Hinata and Pedro’s marathons of DBZ in Portugese and English! ^^

Also, Furudate WE SEE YOU. We see you being meta and implying that now Haikyuu!! is over, he’s moving on...Akaashi’s line about going forward hit me hard...it’s like he’s telling us, the fandom, that going on to start something new isn’t so bad. SO YOU SAY. 

BOKUAKA NATION -- WE CANON NOW, RIGHT?!

I love that Akaashi gets to interview Bokuto (IS HE GOING TO BE THE STAR of the Volleyball manga Tenma Udai is writing?! He would be PERFECT for it!) and how happy Akaashi looks, even if he and Bokuto realize how differently they view the term “normal.” 

ALSO, it’s implied above that Akaashi, Bokuto, and Tenma were going out for drinks...which now....we know that it’s just Bokuto and Akaashi, since Tenma was going home. Uhm, FAN FIC WRITERS ASSEMBLE!

I also love that Udai joins the club, along with Fukurodani’s coach and manager, of people who realize that Bokuto and Akaashi are weirdos but they are weirdos together, so it’s fine. 

Keeping the “Ship Train” going, we get little bits of Shimizu x Yachi from the bathhouse before the Inarizaki Match, where Kiyoko finally acknowledges she is okay showing her legs...thanks to Yachi’s words. I also find Suga wanting to know “the tea” on the situation to be adorable. 

AND FINALLY, YES, Y’ALL:

I was spoiled with Kuroo’s return, but seriously, Furudate, you saved him for the end here so INTENTIONALLY. 

Because OF COURSE Kuroo would work for the JVA. As a promoter. CONNECTING people...with Volleyball...because that’s the Nekoma way.

And FURUDATE ARE YOU SUGGESTING TO US THAT KUROO AND KENMA ARE BUSINESS PARTNERS AND COLLABORATORS BECAUSE MY KUROKEN HEART IS SOARING -- 

-- and let it be known Atsumu Miya rightfully doesn’t trust Kuroo, and neither does Sakusa. A nice SakuAtsu crumb where we actually see Sakusa agree with Miya without sacrasm or question! Poor Shoyo is a salesman’s dream, though. I mean, Kuroo does look a little sketchy in some of those shots...BUT....

6. Kuroo’s speech about sports was SO fitting. Seriously, everything he says here is BASICALLY what makes Haikyuu!! such a great series. I DID laugh out loud at the line about “hardly anybody dies.” 

*Flashbacks to “Dead Daichi” meme*

5. It’s taken us the ENTIRE series, but Kageyama finally talks to Kindaichi and Kunimi. This was so heartwarming, seeing Kageyama wanting to play WITH THEM. AS A TEAM. This made my heart expand three sizes. The character development on Kageyama, and Kindaichi, is through the roof.

I also LOVE Kunimi the most in these panels. Kunimi is a MOOD. 

Y’ALL. I’VE WAITED 400 CHAPTERS FOR THIS PANEL OF THESE THREE HAPPY AND BECOMING FRIENDS AGAIN.

4. I love that Hoshiumi doesn’t see Hinata as a Rival, but as someone that is going to help him show the rest of the world the strength of someone who doesn’t have height. I also find it interesting that we see the Japanese Olympic Coach walking out just as Hoshiumi gives us that beautiful gaze. So...does Hoshiumi know he’s going to be on the Olympic team, with Hinata, maybe? Foreshadowing, perhaps?

3. Okay, okay, I held it together until this page. 

It wasn’t Ushijima’s panel with Washijo that got me.

It wasn’t Saeko and Akane reuniting, though that was sweet. 

It wasn’t the three “Pure Captains” reuniting, though it made my heart happy.

It honestly wasn’t the five first years together, either. They’re all so happy and having a laugh at Kageyama’s expense, and as beautiful as that panel is.

SUGAWARA IN LINE TO GET KAGEYAMA’S AUTOGRAPH.

That is what got me. 

Him in line, so meekly, to get the autograph of his kouhai, the man Suga joked would have to tell about how much he learned from HIM when he was giving out interviews and autographs...I just...Sugawara made me cry. That is all. 

2. Then there’s this last page. 2021. 

"We overcame difficulties and stand here.”

Furudate really said “screw you” to Covid messing up the timeline.

Yes, seeing Kageyama and Hinata in their original jersey numbers was amazing, but I think we all saw that coming if these two happened to get on the Olympic team. 

What I want to focus on are the two countries we see included in the bottom corner here. We see: 

Brazil -- and some fluffy haired man carrying the flag for the team.

And we see the United States -- there’s several American Flags and stars and stripes on the shirts of the crowd, there.

SO, HEADCANON TIME: 

* Oikawa was on the Argentinean League, so could he play for Brazil? It’s not likely, but not impossible....BUT, I don’t think that’s it.

I don’t think Oikawa is on Japan’s National Team for the Olympics.

If he is on the Olympic Team, I think he’ll be on America’s. 

Why? Because, and this could be because I’m the biggest IwaOi shipper, but Iwaizumi was still in the United States with Ushijima’s father at the end of Chapter 395. And if he’s still there, there is no reason why Iwaizumi couldn’t be a physical trainer alongside Ushijima’s father for the U.S. Olympic team. And why wouldn’t Oikawa trek over to the States to be on the same team as Iwa-Chan’s working with? I’m probably wrong, BUT -- 

We also still need to see Seijoh’s banner, and as others have theorized, how fitting would it be to see Hinata, Kageyama, and (probably) Ushijima on the team facing Oikawa? I just....I’m betting money that Oikawa shows up in 402. I hope we at least see him on the Olympic Stage. OIKAWA DESERVES IT. 

1. So, who are we missing that hasn’t been shown yet?

We still need to see the rest of Nekoma (Lev, Yaku, Yamamoto, Kai....could they be in the stands or on the Japan team? I guess we’ll find out!)

We haven’t seen Daishou and Mika -- I would love to see them watching or narrating in the audience during the Olympic game.

And finally, yes, we’ve seen Tendo in the Chapter 395 flashback, but we’ve never seen what he’s DOING. Furudate has shown us with every character what they’ve been doing since the timeskip....EXCEPT TENDO. I’m calling it that he’ll appear one more time next chapter, too.

Oikawa- Most likely the gang will consist of his fan girlsso he arranges a meet and greet with them to set the rules straight. If theycross him, they’ll be hell to pay.

Iwaizumi- Doesn’t mess around, keeps her close to him at alltimes and if he can’t be there leaves Kyounti to watch over her until he cantake care of the problem. He’ll start with just talking but if they won’t backdown neither will he.

Bokuto- Asks Akaashi for advice because he doesn’t want tomake the problem worse and follows the suggestion to have a meeting with theaggressors. If they can’t reach an agreement, things go from semi-friendly tofull on violent quickly. Bokuto will not risk losing her because he was tooslow to act.

Yaku- Kuroo doesn’t call him a demon for nothing. Overall,Yaku is an easy-going guy (except where Lev is concerned because the tol beanjust pushes his buttons too easily). One such button if threatening his family.Short or not, this member of Nekoma will lay his own body on the line toprotect her. Good thing he has such intimidating juniors to take with him asback up.

Ennoshita- Tries for a peaceful resolution but make nomistake, he’ll lay anyone in the ground who seriously intends to harm her.

**BIRTHDAY SPOILERS BELOW**

I wonder if Furudate knew that the arc would be at this point in June, especially with Chapter 398 coming out on Shoyo’s official birthday. Either way, after reminding us in Chapter 396 that the manga is slowly but surely entering its final stages with the “party is almost over,” still in the denial stage, there is one thing we can confirm with Chapter 398: Shoyo Hinata deserves all of our Respect. 

I love panels like this, where we see a rare glimpse at our eternal ball of sunshine showing competitive fierceness -- hell, even a rare scowl here -- as he forces himself to get up and ready for the Adler’s counter attack, after he receives and sends back Ushijima’s spike from the end of Chapter 397. He’s not some happy-go-lucky teenager just excited to be invited to the game. 

He’s hungry, and wants to win. 

And he’s not the only one. Kageyama doesn’t even have to look to feel the energy radiating off of Ushijima during the Adler’s own version of the Synchro Attack. We know who he’s sending the ball to. Ushijima is as demanding as Hinata with how much he wants that set. But as cool as this moment is -- 

--it’s THIS shot that just made me sit back in silence and awe at Furudate’s mastery. You can almost feel this happening in the anime; the screen blinking white and then fading into this moment. Hinata so in the zone, remembering his training on the beach, the work he’s done to be good at receiving...because he HAD to be good to keep playing and moving forward. I also want you to note the look on Hinata’s face in this panel below. Because I’m going to come back to it. 

I love how Suga-mom is about to cry again, this is why Asahi brought tissues, and how Daichi, Captain of Receives, is able to comment alongside Ukai. But it’s Takeda, with his misty, nostalgic eyes, who really brings this chapter to its core: 

Remember that face in the panel above? With Shoyo looking up into the air? When I saw that, I immediately thought of this panel: 

 It’s fitting that the chapter featuring the last high school match we see Hinata play mirrors the chapter featuring Hinata’s last middle school match. It’s also a parallel of two similar looks with different emotions: The one from Chapter 365 represents every ounce of fear, anxiety, guilt, and disappointment Hinata is experiencing all at once having to leave the gymnasium. The look in the frame of him about to receive Ushijima’s spike is one of serenity, calm, understanding, and acknowledgement of his own skill and that he can overcome the obstacle in front of him. 

There’s a lot of callbacks to Chapter 365 in Chapter 398, particularly with how Hinata remembers Takeda’s speech to him, and we suddenly see the impact that moment had on him. In this gorgeous double-spread, we see in dark gray the moments of defeat Hinata suffered that were his trauma: Losing that first official match, the loss to Aoba Johsai, the collapse during Quarterfinals...and then we see what he did with Takeda’s words. 

Not only did he train, but he took care of himself. Hinata throughout his whole first year was shown to be on a constant adrenaline high, running nonstop without any adherence to his physical well-being. I nearly teared up seeing the “Mastery Series: Sleep” books, because it shows that Hinata REALIZED he had an issue with himself that could become a problem down the road, and worked towards fixing it; albeit through meditation, self-help, etc. 

In the top left, we see that one moment in Rio when Hinata started to despair (I’m going to do a whole other post on Oikawa and his relation to this, don’t worry), but then there’s that callback to Takeda’s words in Chapter 365, and how Hinata decided instead of sinking into despair, to make it a moment to grab towards self-improvement. 

And Hinata transformed that advice from his coach into reality. When presented with the challenge of Ushijima’s spike, one that few ever receive head-on, Shoyo Hinata was “at the front of the line when that opportunity came knocking:” 

But here’s where we get into the heart of Chapter 398:

If the death of his grandfather and the subsequent ending of his middle school volleyball experience were Kageyama’s central trauma, they were addressed in Chapter 387. Kageyama kept referring back to that one moment over and over. 

For Hinata, his ultimate trauma was the Kamomedai game and his collapse and removal from the game in Chapter 365, since we don’t see any other moment in his high school career have near the impact, and Chapter 398 addresses it. 

Just like Hinata’s “I’m here!” was what brought Kageyama back to reality and the possibility of moving forward, so were these words to Hinata from Kageyama at the ending of the Kamomedai game: 

Shoyo Hinata reminded Kageyama of his grandfather’s promise, that someday someone better WOULD come along and spurn him forward to become a better player. 

And likewise, Kageyama reminded Hinata of his own promise, to stay in the game the longest, and that by leaving the Kamomedai game early, he hasn’t fulfilled that promise...yet...so he HAS to keep moving forward and become a better player, too.

From Chapter 365′s darkest moment --

To the end of Chapter 398, calling back and seeing the same moment from a different angle, his coach’s words followed by a fulfilled action: 

“Concentrate on what you need to do to win.” 

Which is just what Shoyo is doing. Thanks to years of practice, dedication, the promise to his greatest ally and opponent, and the advice he received as a first year from his Coach, Ittetsu Takeda. 

BONUS: The chapter title calls back to the Boy Ball Arc, forever cementing it and the Rio mini-arc as some of the most important moments in this series. I will defend this to the ends of the Earth.  

BONUS BONUS: Y’all, I’m glad Shoyo’s in his twenties now in the series, because...I’m not going to lie...Furudate, your drawings of him this whole game just have me thinking:
