heās proud of his career, his hair, his muscles, of everything about him. he prides himself on being the best. but heās especially proud of being your boyfriend.
it is in atsumuās nature to show off every time, and of course he adores showing you off the most. every time that he looks at you, his eyes are filled with admiration and adoration, he looks at you like youāre the most incredible thing that couldāve ever happened to him, which you are.
so when they see the two of you, people are quick to imagine that you are pretty quiet, the one keeping him in check.
they couldnāt be more wrong.
like most evenings after going to the gym, atsumu stands in front of the large mirror in your shared bathroom, flexing and inspecting the muscles of his body. he flexes his arms, showing off his biceps, pecs and back, slowly turning around to stare at every possible angle.
and of course atsumu could do all this directly at the gym, he isnāt that stupid and does check his muscles there too, but he knows how you get when he shows off his muscles...
as if on cue, you appear into the mirror, leaning against the doorframe, your eyes scanning over your boyfriendās figure. amused, atsumuās eyes stay on you as he watches your own roam around his body as you ruffle your hair and bit your lower lip.
āsee somethinā ya like, babe?ā his lips curl into a snarky smirk as he flexs his arms just a tad bit more.
rolling your eyes at his remark, you slowly step closer to him, your eyes still stuck on him. once you reached him, you wrapped your arms around his neck from behind, your nails sliding and scratching against atsumu's skin making him shiver and his expression falter.
āuhm, you look good baby...ā you practically purr as your nails slide against his muscles, sinking your teeth in his back and shoulders before kissing the spot.
as if reacting to your voice and touch, his body twitches, aching to be closer and closer to you, his ears and the back of his neck flushing under your praises. āoh yah? think so?ā his voice falters as a breathe gets stuck in his throat when you nibbles on his tanned skin.
your small āmhmā is what breaks him, he turns around, his hands finding their rightful place on your hips, tugging you closer to him as to flush your chest against his naked torso.
immediately, one of your hands ends up on the back of his neck, grazing at his undercut while the other rests on his biceps, squishing to feel the muscles under your touch.
atsumu lets out a real groan, muttering a quiet āfuckā before flipping you onto his shoulder and rushing to the bedroom while you laugh and kiss his cheek.
the two of you perfectly match each otherās freak.
On the first day of you becoming Aoba Johsaiās manager, you learnt how painful it was to get hit by a volleyball.
Just as you were handing out water bottles to the players who finished their serving practice,
THWACK!
A volleyball flew off course and smacked you square in the face.
The gym fell silent.
The ball bounced away as you stood frozen, the pain hadnāt settled in yet.
"OW?!"
"OH MY GOSH!"
A brown-haired boy sprinted across the court, panic written all over his face.
"I'm so sorry! Are you okay? I swear that wasn't supposed to-"
You rubbed your nose before looking up at him.
"ā¦That hurt!"
There was a brief pause.
His lips twitched.
Then he burst into laughter.
"PFFT- I'm sorry! I swear I am! It's justā¦"
He pointed at your completely dumbfounded expression.
"Your face! I'm sorry, but your expression right now is so funny!"
"Stop laughing!!"
"I'm trying!" he wheezed.
"I really am- but I can't!"
He said while laughing hysterically.
Just then, a loud smack echoed through the gym.
Iwaizumi had just hit Oikawa on the back of the head.
"APOLOGISE PROPERLY, IDIOT!"
"I AM apologising?!"
"YOU ARENāT!ā
Oikawa rubbed the back of his head with a dramatic pout before bowing properly.
"ā¦I'm really sorry."
From that day on, Oikawa discovered your reactions were the funniest thing he'd ever seen while you discovered he was the most annoying person you'd ever met.
The next practice, he decided to test the waters.
As you organised the water bottles, he quietly reached over and slipped your pen off the clipboard.
āWhereās my penā¦?ā You muttered while looking around.
Oikawa held it up innocently.
āLooking for this?ā
You stared at him.
āā¦Give it back.ā
āWhat if I donāt?ā
āIāll tell Iwaizumi.ā
āIwa-chan would never betray me!ā
You couldnāt help the laugh that escaped.
āPfftā¦Youāre so annoying.ā
He handed your pen back with a grin.
That was all Oikawa needed to know. You didnāt mind it.
So, the teasing continued.
Heād flick your forehead whenever he walked past, steal your pens just to hand them back a minute later, call your name only to smile when you looked over.
Every time, youād complain but thereād be the hint of a smile on your face.
Eventually, you started teasing him back.
His towel would mysteriously disappear before practice, youād poke fun at him whenever he stopped to fix his hair, and if he missed a serve youād tease him.
āWOAH! WHAT A GREAT SERVE!ā
Oikawa would gasp in mock offense every single time.
Before long, it turned into an unspoken competition. Every practice came with some new way for both Oikawa and you to get on each otherās nerves
.
One day after you finished locking up the gym,
āBoo!ā
You jumped.
āOIKAWA!ā
He burst out laughing.
āYou shouldāve seen your face!ā
Without hesitation, you smacked his arm.
āIDIOT!!ā
Still laughing, he fell into step beside you.
The walk home was filled with the same teasing as always.
Before either of you realised it, teasing each other had become the highlight of your day.
Somewhere between after school practices, shared walks home and countless teasing matches, you two became really good friends.
Towards the end of the first year, the jealousy came.
The school's infamous playboy had stopped by your desk with his usual charming smile.
"Hey, L/N."
You looked up.
I've been meaning to ask⦠Are you free this weekend?"
From across the classroom, Oikawa glanced over.
"Whyās he talking to Y/N..?"
Without another thought, Oikawa got to his feet and wandered over.
He greeted the other boy with a polite smile.
"Sorry, can I borrow her for a second?"
The boy shrugged.
"Sure."
Oikawa turned to you.
"Coach wanted the managers to help sort the equipment after school, remember?"
"Oh! Youāre right. Thanks for reminding me!"
By the time you looked back, the boy had already walked away.
"⦠I guess he left."
Oikawa watched him disappear into the hallway.
"I was just making sure she doesnāt get tricked?!"
Iwaizumi sighed.
"Sure, Shittykawaā¦"
The teasing from the team only got worse after that.
"Oikawa likes L/N."
"I do not?!"
"You absolutely do."
"I absolutely don't."
Fed up, Oikawa folded his arms.
"Fine! I'll stop annoying her!"
Hanamaki raised an eyebrow.
"Pfft. Good luck."
That lasted until you walked past him.
Without thinking, he flicked your forehead.
"ā¦Ow?!"
Oikawa blinked, realising what he had just done.
"Ohā¦I wasn't supposed to do that."
Hanamaki laughed and looked over to Iwaizumi.
"See? Told ya."
Meanwhile, Iwaizumi had developed a new problem.
Somehow, every conversation became about you.
"Y/N smiled today."
"She laughed at my joke."
"She said my serve looked good!"
Iwaizumi sighed.
"I thought you were just annoying her."
"I am!"
Hanamaki and Matsukawa burst into laughter.
"You're exhaustingā¦" Iwaizumi muttered.
Second year arrived before any of you realized it.
The teasing still stayed but somehow⦠it changed?
You didn't notice it at first, neither did Oikawa.
He still steals your items, flicks your forehead, and calls you annoying whenever you beat him racing to the gym.
But nowā¦
Without saying anything, he'd brush a stray leaf out of your hair, somehow remember every exam you had, and appear beside you to carry the heavier equipment before you could even reach for it.
Even his teasing became more romantic. Whenever someone pointed it out, he would get overly defensive.
One morning, he casually handed you your favorite grape drink.
"I accidentally bought two."
You looked at him.
"ā¦You hate grapes."
"ā¦People change."
Iwaizumi nearly choked on his water.
"You bought that because L/N likes it."
"I did not."
"You literally don't even like grapes."
"I felt adventurous."
"You've never been adventurous with food."
"ā¦I'm expanding my horizons."
You laughed.
"Pfft. I appreciate the sacrifice."
Oikawa looked strangely pleased by that.
The rest of second year passed much the same. The teasing never stopped, but neither did the little things.
Oikawa still claimed he was "just annoying you," but by then, everyone else could see there was more to it.
Third year had only just begun when you sent a text to the Aoba Johsai Volleyball group chat saying you had a fever.
Oikawa stared at the message a second longer before slipping his phone back into his pocket, his smile faltering.
Practice felt off.
It was quieter than usual. Only the sounds of volleyballs being slammed and shoes squeaking against the floor could be heard.
Usually, Oikawa would have been making a fuss about how you were showing favouritism by not handing him a towel first or teasing you about something by now but he was quieter than usual.
Sure, he still wore his usual bright smile and captained the team like always, offering advice and encouragement whenever someone needed it.
But Iwaizumi could tell something was off.
Oikawa told himself it was only because there wasn't anyone around to tease today.
Definitely not because you weren't there.
During a water break, he wandered over to Iwaizumi.
"Iwa-chan~ Didya know Y/N-chan said she has a fever?"
Iwaizumi took a sip of his water.
"Yeah. She said it in the group chat.ā
"I hope she's actually resting."
"She probably is."
"I reminded her in the group chat to take her medicine."
"ā¦I saw."
"And to drink more water."
"Mhmā¦"
"And not to worry about practice."
"I know."
Hanamaki wandered over, towel slung over his shoulder.
"You've been talking about L/N all practice."
Oikawa blinked.
"ā¦Have I?"
"You mentioned her before warm-ups, during serves and just now."
"Geez! Canāt a captain show concern for his team manager?! I was just worried!"
Matsukawa walked over after hearing the commotion.
"You also remembered she has a chemistry test next week." He said, chiming in.
āSo what?!ā
Matsukawa pointed at the unopened drink beside Oikawa.
"You even bought her favorite drink again. What about us? Why don't you ever buy us drinks?"
Oikawa immediately snatched it and took a large gulp.
"T-That's because I like it too! She just keeps stealing it from me!"
Iwaizumi raised an eyebrow.
"You've hated grape since middle school."
"Canāt a man change his taste?!"
"And somehow you always know when she skips lunch."
Oikawa pouted and frowned.
"ā¦What exactly are you guys trying to say?"
The three of them exchanged a look.
Iwaizumi folded his arms.
"Shittykawa, you've spent this entire water break talking about L/N."
"ā¦I have?"
Hanamaki nodded.
"You've talked more about her than volleyball today."
A long silence followed.
For the first time in years, Oikawa actually thought about it.
The volleyball, the stealing of pens, walking you home, the grape drink, waiting outside your classroom and remembering every little thing mentioned you with embarrassing detail.
None of it had ever felt unusual until now.
"It's pretty obvious you like her."
Iwaizumi said while letting out a sigh.
"ā¦Oh."
Oikawa froze, his eyes slowly widening.
"I likeā¦Y/N."
The gym fell silent.
"Took you long enough." Matsukawa smiled.
"We've known since second year." Hanamaki laughed.
"You just realized?!" Iwaizumi deadpanned.
Oikawa stared blankly at the floor, his face burning red.
"ā¦I-I need to leave."
"Practice isn't over, Shittykawa."
"I know!"
"Coach is gonna kill you."
"Tell him something came up!"
Before anyone could stop him, Oikawa turned on his heel and hurried out of the gym.
The doors slammed shut behind him.
Iwaizumi sighed.
"About time he realisedā¦"
The next few days were⦠strange?
The moment Oikawa saw you in the hallway, he would turn around and sprint away.
If you waved, he would pretend he didn't see you.
If you entered the gym, he would make sure you two were at opposite ends of the court at all times.
The forehead flicks, sarcastic comments and constant teasing were all gone along with the boy who somehow always found a reason to stand beside you.
You frowned as you watched him do a total 180 when he realised where you were standing.
"Umā¦Did I do something wrong?"
"You didn't."
Iwaizumi answered, not looking up from tying his shoes.
"Then why is he acting like this?"
"Shittykawaās just being an idiot."
A week later, Coach called Oikawa back to discuss captain duties after practice while everyone else went home.
You stayed behind to finish putting away equipment before locking up.
By the time you left, the sun was beginning to set.
A familiar figure walked a short distance ahead.
"Oikawa!"
His shoulders stiffened as he kept walking.
You frowned.
"OIKAWA!"
He started walking faster.
"ā¦Seriously?"
You hurried after him until you stepped in front of him, forcing him to stop.
He immediately looked anywhere but at you.
āOh! Hiā¦ā
āHi?!ā
Oikawa gulped after realising he couldnāt get out of this conversation.
"You've been avoiding me."
"WHAT! I haven'tā¦. What are you talking aboutā¦?ā
He said unconvincingly, eyes darting everywhere.
"You literally have??ā
"I've just been⦠um⦠busy."
"You literally walked away from me yesterday AND ignored me when I waved."
"ā¦Coincidence."
āCoincidence my ass!ā
You sighed.
"Did I do something wrong? Just tell me."
His head snapped up immediately.
"WHAT?! NO!!"
"Then why won't you even look at me?"
A long pause followed.
"ā¦Because I can't."
"Huh?"
He rubbed the back of his neck, his cheeks turning pink.
"Itās justā¦! I realised something and now every time I look at youā¦ā
He groaned, dragging both hands over his face.
"This is so embarrassingā¦!!"
"Oikawa, what are you talking about?"
"I had this whole speech planned."
"A speech??"
"Yeah, I even practiced it! It sounded a lot cooler in my head but nowā¦ā
Despite yourself, you laughed.
āWell?ā
āDonāt rush me!ā
He took a deep breath.
āā¦I canāt do this.ā
He turned as if he was about to walk away.
āOikawa!ā
He stopped in his tracks.
āā¦I only realised it last week.ā
āRealised what??ā You frowned.
He squeezed his eyes shut.
āThat⦠I like you.ā
Silence.
āI didnāt know before, okay?! Then everyone pointed it out, and now I canāt stop thinking about it!ā
He buried his face in his hands.
āIāve been trying to avoid you because every time I see you, I remember I like you and then I panic!ā
āYou really are an idiot, Shittykawa⦠You couldāve just told me that from the start!ā
Oikawa slowly looked up, realising what you just said.
Years later, you sat in the stands waiting for Oikawa to finish practice in Argentina.
The moment Oikawa spotted you, his face lit up.
He waved so enthusiastically that one of his teammates laughed and teased him.
The second practice ended, he jogged over.
"How long have you been here?"
"Mmm⦠I think I arrived around ten minutes ago."
"Missed me?"
You looked at him for a moment before smiling.
"You knowā¦"
"Hm?ā
"Youāre still as annoying as you were in Aoba Johsai."
Oikawa grinned and laced his fingers with yours.
"And yet you married me anyway."
You rolled your eyes.
"I guess I got used to you."
Oikawa couldnāt help but laugh.
Some things had changed.
You graduated, got married and even moved across the world together.
But one thing never changed: the fact that Oikawa Tooru was still just as annoying.
SynopsisąŖāā“ You tell one tiny lie at work. One. Now your coworkers want to meet your boyfriend...The boyfriend who doesn't exist. Enter Bokuto Koutarou, who hears about your dilemma and, with the confidence of a man who has never once doubted himself, says: "I'll be your boyfriend." Fake dating should've been simple. Instead, it somehow involves fake anniversaries, couple lore, coffee deliveries, karaoke dates, way too much hand-holding, coworkers who are far too invested, and a fake boyfriend who's suspiciously good at acting like the real thing. The real problem isn't convincing everyone else they're dating. It's convincing themselves they aren't.
tagsąŖāā“ fake dating, coworkers to lovers, happy ending, the both of you are kinda dumb, idiots in love, first relationship, office shenanigans
NOTESąŖāā“ did i mention how i came up with this plot and immediately wrote it all out in one go after watching jb's performance at coachella?
When you agreed to this fake relationship with Bokuto, this was not what you had in mind⦠at all.
You had expected something simple, minimal, convincing enough to satisfy your coworkers without requiring the two of you to completely destroy your sense of peace in the process. What you had not expected was for Bokuto to commit to the role like his life depended on it.
It started the very next morning after you introduced your boyfriend to your friends at the cafe.
You had barely settled into your seat when someone near the entrance to your department suddenly let out a noise that sounded suspiciously like barely restrained excitement. You looked up just in time to see Bokuto walking in with two coffee cups in hand.
Your stomach dropped instantly.
āOh,ā Yui said from somewhere behind you, voice dripping with amusement. āLook whoās here.ā
You immediately sat up straighter as Bokuto made his way over, completely unbothered by the attention already following him through the office.
āMorning,ā he said easily, holding out one of the drinks toward you.
You stared at him. āYou didnāt have to do this.ā
āI know.ā He grinned. āBut boyfriends do this kinda thing, right?ā
Before you could even process that sentence properly, Bokuto leaned down slightly and pressed a quick kiss to your cheek.
Your brain shut off. Actually shut off.
The entire department erupted instantly with a mix of squeals, and gasps, and ohmygods. Heat exploded across your face so fast it physically hurt.
Meanwhile Bokuto just straightened back up like he hadnāt detonated a bomb in the middle of your morning.
āSee you at lunch?ā he asked casually.
You stared at him for a full second before managing a weak, completely incoherent nod.
āCool,ā he said brightly, then walked away like nothing had happened.
The second he disappeared from your sight, you dropped your face directly into your hands. The teasing from your coworkers was merciless after that.
And somehow, Bokuto only got worse.
Every lunch break, he appeared outside your department at almost the exact same time, leaning casually against the wall while waiting for you like this had been your routine for years. At first, you tried walking normally beside him.
That lasted less than two days.
Each time you brought up the necessity of how openly affectionate he was being with you, his excuse would always be the same each timeā
āAuthenticity,ā Bokuto had said solemnly after grabbing your hand in the hallway one afternoon.
āYou cannot keep using that word to justify things,ā you hissed, trying not to combust as several coworkers walked past.
āYes I can.ā
āNo you canāt.ā
āIt helps the immersion.ā
āThere is no immersion!ā
āThere is for me.ā
You nearly tripped over nothing. Bokuto, unfortunately, found your suffering hilarious.
The worst part was that he never acted embarrassed about any of it. Not the hand holding. Not the casual touches. Not the way heād suddenly rest his chin on the top of your head while reading something over your shoulder, completely unaware of the psychological damage he was causing you.
One afternoon, you had been focused on replying to an email when Bokuto appeared behind your chair out of nowhere. You barely had time to register his presence before a warm hand landed gently on top of your head.
āThere she is,ā he said affectionately.
Your entire body froze.
Across the room, Mika made a sound like she was witnessing true love in real time. Meanwhile, you turned slowly in your chair to stare up at Bokuto in disbelief.
āā¦Why are you like this?ā
āWhat?ā he asked innocently. āYouāre cute.ā
You felt your soul leave your body.
Again.
And somehow, despite how absurd this entire arrangement was becoming, despite the embarrassment and the constant teasing and Bokutoās apparently limitless dedication to authenticityā
You were beginning to get used to him.
That was the dangerous part.
At some point, your days had started unconsciously revolving around him. You noticed it slowly, in embarrassing little ways that crept up on you before you could stop them. Expecting to see him outside your department around lunchtime. Looking up whenever someone loud passed by because there was a decent chance it was Bokuto. Catching yourself glancing at your phone during slower parts of the day because he usually sent at least one stupid message before work ended.
It was bad⦠objectively bad. And apparently only getting worse.
āYouāre sulking.ā
āIām not sulking,ā you muttered immediately.
Beside you, Bokuto made a noise that very clearly meant he didnāt believe you for even a second.
The two of you were standing near a food truck parked along the side of the street just outside the office building, the late afternoon air still warm from the sun. Around you, other office workers lingered in small groups, conversations blending into the distant noise of traffic and the occasional hiss coming from the grill behind the counter.
āIām serious,ā you continued. āHe called me into his office over one formatting mistake. One.ā
Bokuto nodded solemnly. āTragic.ā
āAnd then he kept talking about professionalism like I committed tax fraud.ā
āMm.ā
āI fixed it in less than two minutes too.ā
āThatās rough, buddy.ā
You turned sharply toward him. āCan you stop sounding entertained?ā
āIām not entertained.ā
āYou literally are.ā
āIām listening very seriously right now.ā
āYouāre smiling.ā
āThatās unrelated.ā
You narrowed your eyes at him while Bokuto grinned shamelessly, entirely too pleased with himself as he leaned against the side of the truck.
The worst part was that he had been listening to you complain for nearly ten minutes now, and somehow you were still going.
āAnd another thing,ā you continued before you could stop yourself, āwhy does he always act like the department is collapsing every time someone makes a tiny mistake? Like, relax. Nobody died.ā
Bokuto hummed thoughtfully. āMaybe he just enjoys being a sadist.ā
āWell, he should keep it contained to the damn bedroom.ā
That finally made Bokuto laugh properly, loud enough that a few nearby people glanced over. The sound was like a sudden burst of sunshineāraw, unvarnished, and completely impossible to ignore. You watched him, his shoulders shaking with the force of it, his eyes crinkling at the corners.Ā
He didn't care who was looking, didn't care about the line at the food truck or the mundane setting of a street corner. He just laughed until he had to catch his breath, and for a terrifying, fleeting moment, it felt like the most natural thing in the world to be standing there beside him.
The domesticity of the moment hit you with the force of a physical blow. Standing there, waiting for lunch, trading complaints like a couple who had been doing this for yearsāit was a trap, a dangerously comfortable illusion.
And just as quickly as the warmth flooded your chest, you slammed the door on it.
You whipped your head away, staring intensely at the handwritten menu board of the food truck. Your heart was doing a frantic, traitorous rhythm against your ribs, and you felt the heat crawling up your neck. Get a grip, you hissed to yourself, the words a silent mantra. This is all fake.
Your attempts to reel yourself in were interrupted when his hand rested on your head. His touch was startlingly gentle, a warm, grounding weight that traced the line of your hair before retreating. You whipped your head around, eyes wide, only to find him looking down at you with a smile that felt dangerously softātoo fond, too genuine, far too real for someone who was supposed to be reading from a script.Ā
Then, he leaned in just enough to tilt his head, his voice dropping into a low, playful hum. āYouāre cute when youāre angry.ā
The air practically vanished from your lungs. You nearly choked on your own saliva, a harsh, strangled noise escaping your throat before you lunged, smacking his hand away with a frantic, uncoordinated swipe.
āGo away,ā you mumbled, your voice dropping to a desperate, shaky register.
You pivoted on your heel, putting your back to him and staring intensely at a nearby trash can as if it held the secrets to the universe. You could feel your face burning, the heat spreading from your cheeks all the way down to your collarbone, turning you a shade of red that you were certain was visible from space.
What the heck was that?
Your brain felt like it was short-circuiting. How could he say something like that so casually? So easily?
It was a lineāa classic, textbook boyfriend lineābut he delivered it with an offhanded comfort that made your pulse hammer against your ribs. Every rational part of your brain was screaming at you to remember the "fake" label, but your traitorous heart was busy doing backflips. You huddled further into yourself, desperately trying to cool down before he noticed you were completely falling apart.
You heard Bokuto chuckle softly, a low, rumbling sound that seemed to vibrate right through the space between you. Before you could retort, a voice from the food truck window barked out your order, cutting through your spiral. Bokuto stepped forward, effortlessly snagging the paper bag of tacos in one hand and expertly balancing the two drinks in the other, his movements smooth and practiced.
"Let's go, babe," he teased, his voice dropping into that infuriatingly smooth, affectionate tone again.
Your arm jerked forward, an instinctual, frustrated swat, but you caught yourself at the last millisecond. You didn't want to be the reason those drinks ended up all over the sidewalk. You settled for rolling your eyes so hard it almost hurt, your face still radiating heat. "Let me hold something," you insisted, reaching for the bag. "You're going to drop it."
Bokuto just shifted his weight, deftly dodging your hand with a grin. "Relax, Iāve got it. I've got a grip like a pro."
"Bokuto, really," you pressed, glaring at the precarious stack of cups. "If you drop anything, you're going back down there to buy another one. My lunch isn't going to be the victim of your overconfidence."
He laughed, that easy, infectious sound bubbling up again, making it impossible for you to stay genuinely annoyed. "Okay, okay! Point taken. I promise, the tacos are safe under my protection."
You huffed, crossing your arms over your chest as you started walking towards the office. You were still vibrating with the lingering embarrassment of his earlier comment, but as he fell into step beside you, looking so completely unbothered and content, you couldn't help but wonder if you were ever going to survive this "fake" arrangement without completely losing your mind.Ā
The days after that blurred strangely in your memory.
Not because nothing happened, but because too many things did. Lunch breaks together became routine. Bokuto started appearing in your department often enough that nobody questioned it anymore. Your coworkers had fully accepted the relationship as fact, and unfortunately, Bokuto seemed determined to make it as believable as possible at every opportunity.
Which was why you now found yourself seated inside a karaoke room with a drink in hand and a growing sense of dread.
Mika and her boyfriend had just finished massacring a love song together to thunderous applause from the rest of the group. Laughter filled the room as Mika dramatically bowed from the couch before collapsing into her seat again, still wheezing.
āOkay, next!ā Yui announced, grabbing the remote before tossing it toward Bokuto.
Without hesitation, he caught it one-handed.Ā
Your stomach immediately sank.
Bokuto leaned forward slightly, scrolling through the song selection screen while everyone else shouted suggestions over one another. The flashing lights from the television reflected across his face as he scanned lazily through the queue.
āOh!ā Yui suddenly pointed at the screen. āAdd that one!ā
Bokutoās finger froze mid-air against the scrolling list. He leaned in, peering at the title Yui had pointed out, and a slow, lopsided grin spread across his face.
āOh,ā he said, his voice dropping into a tone of mock-seriousness. āThis? This is actually the song I confessed with.ā
The room went dead silent for a heartbeat, and thenā
āWhat?!ā Izumi shrieked, a laugh already bubbling up in her throat.
Bokuto stood up, unbothered by the collective gasp, and headed toward the front of the room. He glanced back over his shoulder at her, his expression perfectly deadpan. āYeah. Iām serious. This is the song I confessed with.ā
Your jaw dropped, your neck snapping toward him so fast a sharp jolt of pain shot through your spine. Excuse me? When had you ever agreed to a confession song? And more importantly, when had it ever been⦠that?
The room erupted.
āWait, hold on!ā Mika roared, clutching her stomach as she leaned back against the cushions. āYou confessed with Justin Bieber?!ā
Mei was already leaning heavily against Fumiko, both of them doubled over and wiping tears of laughter from their eyes. āNo way! Thatās actually a crime!ā
āThat is absolutely insane,ā Yui added, cackling as she drummed her hands on her knees.
Izumi was shaking her head, grinning wildly. āThat is the corniest thing I have ever heard in my entire life! Youāre kidding, right?ā
Bokuto didnāt even flinch at the roasting; he just leaned against the speaker, looking entirely pleased with himself. āHey, at least it worked,ā he said, flashing a grin that was far too bright. āSheās my girlfriend now, right?ā
He nudged his head in your direction, and the room turned its collective gaze toward you. You could feel the heat radiating off your face, turning your skin a bright, indignant shade of crimson.
āI am notāā you started, your voice pitching up in a desperate attempt to defend your dignity, but Bokuto cut you off before you could even finish your sentence.
āShe couldnāt help it,ā he teased, winking at the group. āShe thought I was charming.ā
The room absolutely lost it. The girls were howling with laughter, and even Mikaās boyfriend let out a loud guffaw, standing up to dap Bokuto up in full support of his ridiculousness. Bokuto laughed along with them, his eyes finding yours with a look of pure, unadulterated mischief.
He turned back to the console and pressed the screen, the track blasting into the room immediately. He held out another microphone toward you, his eyebrow raised in a silent, playful challenge.
āWhy not we sing it together?ā he asked, his grin widening.
"What?" you squeaked, your voice barely audible over the beat pumping through the room.
The cheer from your friends was deafening. "Get up there!" Izumi shouted, clapping in time with the music. "Don't leave him hanging!"
Bokuto gave the microphone a playful shake, moving closer to you until you could feel the warmth radiating from him. "Why not? Itāll be fun," he promised, his eyes dancing with that familiar, maddening sparkle.
"It's a solo, though," you hissed, shaking your head so hard your hair whipped across your face. "You don't just 'make' it a duet. That's not how music works."
He just shrugged, looking entirely unbothered by your logical protest. "We can always make it into a duet if we take turns after each line. Come on, don't tell me you're scared of a little Biebs."
Knowing there was no way outānot with the entire group watching and Mika already filming with her phoneāyou begrudgingly reached out and snatched the microphone from his hand. You stalked to the front of the room, grumbling under your breath about how you were going to make him pay for this later.
As you stood next to him, the screen began to scroll the lyrics in vibrant, neon colors, and the performance was in play.
At first, it was exactly as chaotic as you expected. Bokuto sang like he had no shame at all, exaggerating every line, moving around the small space like he was performing for a stadium instead of a cramped karaoke room. You could barely keep up with your own lines without laughing, half embarrassed and half amused at how seriously unserious he was being.
The room was loud again, everyone reacting, cheering, laughing, completely absorbed in the performance.
And then, somewhere in the middle, it shifted.
It wasnāt obvious at first.
Bokuto was still singing, still moving, still playfulābut when the song reached the bridge, his energy changed just slightly. He turned toward you without making a big show of it, and for a second, it felt like the noise in the room dulled in comparison.
He wasnāt grinning anymore. Just singing, and looking at youānot in a teasing way. Just⦠steady. Like the joke had stopped being a joke for half a breath too long.
Your hands tightened slightly around the microphone without you realizing it.
Then the moment passed just as quickly as it came.
Bokuto straightened again, laughter slipping back into his expression as the song moved forward, the roomās energy catching up once more.
By the time the chorus hit again, he was fully back in performance mode, pointing dramatically toward you as he sang the final part with exaggerated confidence.
āIf I was your boyfriendāā
The room immediately exploded into cheers again.
Bokuto threw himself back into the chaos like nothing had happened, laughing loudly as he finished the song with way too much energy, completely shameless once more.
And you?
You just stood there for a second after it ended, still holding the microphone, still trying to understand why that brief moment in the middle felt louder than everything else combined.
By the time the song ended, the room had fully erupted again.
Cheers, laughter, and overlapping teasing voices filled the space as Mika practically collapsed into her boyfriendās side, still laughing while everyone around them reacted to what had apparently been one of the most unnecessarily entertaining performances of the night. The energy didnāt settle; if anything, it lingered, warm and loud, like no one was quite ready to let go of the moment yet.
You let yourself be guided back to your seat beside Bokuto.
He dropped down easily next to you, as if he belonged there, and without thinking twice slung an arm over the back of your chair. Not around you, not fully, but close enough that you were very aware of him beside you in a way you couldnāt quite ignore.
Around you, the teasing continued.
āThat was actually kind of insane.ā
āHe committed way too hard to that.ā
āWhy did that lowkey feel romantic though?ā
You gave the appropriate reactions at the appropriate timesāsmall laughs, brief smiles, just enough participation to not seem absent. But most of your attention wasnāt really on the group anymore.
It was stuck on him.
On the way he had looked at you during that brief shift in the song. The way the joking energy had softened for just a moment, like something underneath it had almost surfaced before being buried again just as quickly.
You shifted slightly in your seat, fingers tightening around your drink.
Get a grip.
This was still the same thing it had always been. Fake. Convenient. Something that worked because it had to.
Nothing more.
Bokuto, meanwhile, was laughing freely at something Mikaās boyfriend said across the table, completely relaxed, completely unbothered, like he hadnāt just taken up more space in your thoughts than he had any right to.
Then, without warning, he leaned slightly closer. His voice dropped just enough for only you to hear.
āSee?ā he said casually, like he was continuing a conversation that had nothing particularly important about it. āI knew weād sound good together.ā
Your breath caught for a second, but you didnāt respond immediately. He didnāt wait for one either.
Just as easily, he turned back toward the group again, laughing at something someone else had said, slipping right back into the conversation like nothing had happened at all. Like he hadnāt just left your thoughts in complete disarray.
You sat there very still, very aware of the arm resting behind you, very aware of how close he was. And then, almost without thinking, your gaze drifted back toward him, enough to look at him properly from the side.
He was smiling at something Fumiko said, eyes bright, posture relaxed, completely at ease in the middle of everyone.
And you just⦠watched him. A little longer than you meant to, quiet in a way no one else would notice. But something in you, for the first time, didnāt move away from it.

why were you told by your parents to meet up with them at keijiās dorm? why were you told to stand side by side with keiji, and why are both of your parents here?
this is so unlike⦠any of them to do.
it's either they finally got to their senses, or they pulled a ultra combo move and teamed up to break the two of you up. the latter makes more sense, but, why?
your parents look at keijiās mom. they gave a knowing nod, and turned back to the both of you.
they hate each other. why would they team up? what is up their sleeve? do they have their own hidden agendas here? is this going to be a battle? this is like, negative and negative... maybe the math is true? when they're multiplied...
your brain is malfunctioning right now.
āweāre⦠sorry.ā
silence fills the room.
you and keiji? confused. your parents? looking... different. actually... apologetic. you think so. you've never seen them do that a lot anyway.
it takes a while before your mom breaks the silence.
āwe⦠weāre sorry we took this long. itās embarrassing to say it took all of this to happen to make things better.ā
āyes. we have seen enough, and,ā keijiās mom joins quietly, āwe understand.ā
you glance at keiji, confused, while heās looking intrigued at this new side he was seeing.
this is weird.
āactually, i saw yn the other day when i was going to meet you, keiji. she was having a meeting, i assume for some organization she's a part of.ā his mom explains, and this surprises the both of you.
keiji remembers - this is why she didnāt come over that day.
"i'm sorry for accidentally spying on you, but,"
she continues,
āyn, youāre passionate. and i have seen that myself. i apologize for making you feel like i did not recognize you. i was wrong for that." she tilts her head for a light bow in apology.
āi⦠thank you.ā you slowly reply, still sinking in what was happening.
āsince i saw you there, iāve been thinking that⦠maybeĀ iĀ was the one who was distracted. not you, nor keiji. honestly, maybe you guys had it together this whole time. we were the only ones making it worse.ā
she looks up to look at you, guilty.
these words are⦠youād never think this would come out of their mouths.
āand keiji,ā
she now turns to her son. his eyes widen a bit, paying immediate attention.
āiām sorry for putting so much pressure on you. even when i did, you did not fail. once.ā she takes a step forward towards her son, caressing his arm.
āi realized how much i was letting you go through, and i couldnāt even let you be in love. thatāsā¦ā
she shakes her head lightly in regret.
āiām sorry. you donāt need to prove anything to me. iām so sorry i made you think you had to.ā
she caresses her sonās cheek, āthank you for being the best son.ā she smiles apologetically, hoping it reaches him somehow.
āi know the wound i gave you isnāt easy to heal, but iāll be patient, like you did with me.ā she taps his arm again, and takes a step back to where she was.
keiji was speechless, his eyes watering.
he couldnāt believe the words he had heard from his mom. it feels like it wasnāt his mom - he honestly feels skeptical, but⦠he always wanted to hear that from her.
his lips part, finding the words to say.
āi⦠iām glad you think that way now, mom. thank you for your words. i appreciate it.ā
he gives her a small smile, and looks away, hoping a tear doesnāt fall. you console him by rubbing his back, and he relaxes into you.
you give him an assuring smile as he glances at you.
that night when you both met after he went to your house, you could see it in his eyes. he was genuinely hurt and disappointed.
keijiās a man of diligence. whatever he believed in, he would work hard to get it. so you could see how frustrated he was when he couldnāt convince both of your parents - even if there was absolutely no evidence for them not to.
and even when he was hurt, he never went over the line. you think everything that keiji has did over the past few weeks were valid and right. never once, did he do anything that was selfish or rash.
he's perfect, really. makes you think you want to make him feel that he doesn't have to be perfect all the time. he can be just your keiji.
āweāre sorry too, keiji.ā your mom says.
āwe can see how you are with our daughter, and you really lift her up.ā
ābeing the nosy parents we are, we saw your posts online.ā
another surprise of the night. well, not that surprising.
āwe were upset at first, but,ā she glances at you,
āwhen we saw how much you made her happy, and how much she was enjoying herselfā¦ā you see her eyes tear up, so she looks back at keiji,
āitā¦Ā we⦠started to feel wrong.ā
āwe⦠take back what we said.ā
your dad finally speaks up. now, this is making you cry too.
āwe see your intentions.ā
āweāre worrywarts and complicated, but we can accept the fact that youāre dating. i hope you can accept us as ynās parents, slowly, as well.ā
keiji gives your parents a grateful look and nods, āno problem, mr. and mrs. y/ln.ā
they smile at him, and their eyes slowly move to you.
āour yn.ā your mom sweetly smiles. āyouāre right.ā
āweĀ didĀ teach you to become your best in everything you do. as parents, we did not want anything to hinder you... until we did. we were what was stopping you.ā
she sighs.
āwe apologize for being helicopter parents. we promise we will let the both of you breathe from now on.ā she gives a small, sheepish chuckle.
you look at the ground with a polite smile in response.
ākeiji has been taking good care of you, and weāre relieved you get to be someone like that.ā
god, finally.
they can see now.
āwe want you to be able to tell us anything. so we decided to be more willing to listen to you. please feel free to come to us for anything, both of you.ā
your dad adds, eyes moving between you and keiji as he speaks.
there was a moment of silence before you could even say something back. you want to say thank you, you want to say i told you so, you wonder why the hell it took this long.
but honestly youāre just⦠relieved. like a big burden was taken off your shoulders.
āwowā¦ā you finally reply, chuckling.Ā āthank you for that. i know itās not easy, butā¦ā
āletās keep communicating, yeah?ā
you give a smile. this is so unusual to happen, and you canāt seem to wrap your head around whatās happening.
but no matter what, you appreciate hearing these words come out of your parentsā mouth.
you both hope this is the start of something great. not just for you, or keiji, but for them as well.
your parents nod. they ask if it was okay to hug you, and you gently agreed. your mom and dad approaches to give you a warm hug, something you did miss.
you glance to see keiji doing the same with his mom, and you smile at the scene. while you were still watching them, mrs. akaashi's eyes meet yours and smiles,
"can i hug you too?"
you of course, say yes. and keiji does the same to both of your parents, shaking hands with your dad.
is this scene even real?
you're now back besides keiji, his arm around your shoulder. you take it in - both of your parents are smiling together, and so are you. what a turn of events. just when you guys 'let it be'.
āso⦠now that weāre done arguing whose the best between the two of us,ā
keiji grabs your hand, intertwining it with yours.
āshall we be the best couple now?ā
you laugh.
like you already havenāt been that.
