OK, this is possibly my most controversial/hottest rpc take - I don't think it actually even is, but I think people are likely to read like, one line, and completely miss my point before reacting, so if anyone finds themselves angry or upset by this for the love of reading comprehension please at least read the entire post before you send me anon hate over it OK thank youuuu
Me saying this when it's an OC multimuse asking might be like "not it", a little bit, but I feel like this isn't something that's going to personally offend you, especially given my obvious abundant interest in your characters, but,
OK so: I think it's perfectly fine for someone to not be interested in OCs. I think disinterest, in general, is... a neutral thing. I say this as someone who writes OCs, has ran single muse blogs for OCs, knows the struggle of trying to interact with OCs versus popular canon characters, etc. etc. I'm personally interested in OCs; I'm personally interested in pretty much every character someone could possibly write as long as there's nothing that gives me anxiety about the character. Why would I defend a take that isn't even personally relevant to me? Well, it just... it irks me, when people behave like something as neutral as someone not being interested was like... a villain trait.
What people say a lot, is that all canon characters are someone's OCs. And like, yes, exactly... but... that means. That means being interested in OCs is the same as being interested in canon characters who are UNFAMILIAR TO YOU. And I see no one ever talk about how people "should" be interested in everyone's canon characters from fandoms they aren't familiar with. But it's literally the same thing, isn't it?
My personal interest when it comes to roleplay is vast. My default state is "I could be interested in writing with this character", so there needs to be some active reason if I'm not open to interacting with some characters (such as my OCD telling me I can't interact with so and so, or me not being able to type out specific words or names, or me having anxiety about something...). That's why it's easy for me to nod along and be like, of course I'm interested. Because I am. But I understand that that's not the case for everyone.
That's why I'm OK with someone following me for one canon male character only, and not wanting my female OCs. Disinterest is morally neutral. And - I think it's natural that people would be more interested in canon characters they already know from a show they love, than characters they don't have that preexisting bond with. I would never fault them for that.
I think it's OK if someone only wants to write with two specific canon characters from some specific movie and literally no other characters at all. I do not understand why people think this is problematic. I do understand being upset about it! I am, sometimes, upset about it when I want to write a specific OC with someone and they don't mark that OC as interested in, on my tracker. But I don't turn that into thinking that's wrong of them, and I don't understand why other people seem to.
This is indie rp. A group roleplay with both canon and OCs would be a different story; in a group, it's fucked up to refuse to interact with someone for such reasons. But this is not group rp. None of us have to write with someone we aren't interested in writing with, mun or muse. And if someone wanted to only interact with very limited, specific characters, I don't see the issue.
That said, I also think it's OK to have a rule about "if you aren't interested in my OCs, you don't get to interact with my canons". Again - this is indie, and you should have rules that cater to you and no one else. If you know it's going to upset you when people follow you for only your canon characters, then that's an excellent rule! I so very highly would encourage people to have this as a rule if they want to. Same with, if you know you only want to interact with canon character you're familiar with, you should be honest about that! And if we start villanising people for not being interested in OCs, or ridiculing them, then people aren't going to feel like they can say that. That's essential information that people should be free to say if it's true to them, without fear of being mocked for it or alienated for it. And like with everything else, if these things were openly stated in people's rules, people could simply avoid becoming mutuals with someone whose preferences contradict theirs.
Just because I personally think people miss out on a lot by refusing to write with OCs doesn't mean refusing to write with OCs is wrong. I mean, I also think not being open to wrong universe crossovers and not being interested in unknown canon characters makes people miss out on things, but obviously many, many people just... disagree. Which is perfectly fine.
We all do this is a fun hobby. I think we all should only ever write something we genuinely want to write. If someone isn't interested in a character, they can't force themselves to become interested. And at least personally I'd rather no one fake interest in any of my OCs just to... what, seem more palatable in their personal preferences to the rpc as a whole?
End of post reminder that I am interested in OCs, and that I write OCs, because people on this site skim-read and I don't need reactive hate anons for something that I didn't even remotely say. "Havu aren't you tired of defending takes you don't even agree with" well, a little, but really only if I get misinterpreted to hell and someone comes at me about something I never even said.
