Just a Bit of Whisky Chapter 6 Upper School
It is beyond weird to reenter upper school with a wedding ring, a new last name, and a pregnant belly. She holds tight to Jamie’s hand as they walk in.
“Well, if isn't Mr. and Mrs. Fraser. And me your best mate not invited to your wedding.” Her mate Gillian greets them.
“Gillian, no one was. Not even our parents. After,” her hand hovers over her lower abdomen,” we will have a ceremony with all our friends and family.”
“Okay then. God lass, what is it like to be…”
“Married or pregnant?” Jamie and her had talked about trying to hide the pregnancy. They only have one more quarter in upper school. It was doable for three months. But had decided at the end that Sinclair or Elsbeth is not a shameful secret but a blessing to be celebrated.
“Both. I can’t even imagine it.”
“Well,” they head to their home room class as she explains. “Pregnancy at first felt like a bad period was about to start. You know that swollen, bloaty feeling, your breasts all achy?”
“Oh aye.”
“Now it feels expectant. Like my whole body is focused on growing this child. My breasts still ache some but are more just full feeling. A pee a lot more. My pelvis is loser, my joints and all feel just more expansive. I am always aware of him or her. I feel so overprotective.”
“Oh. That is so bloody wonderful.”
“Miss Duncan, can you kindly not curse at my door. Mrs. Fraser will you and your husband by joining us or you above that now?” Mr. Duscany asks. He was quite unhappy with the Fraser's marriage as his own spoiled child, Geneva, had her heart set on Jamie.
“Of course Mr. Duscany. Come mo bhean.” He escorts her into the room and they take seats by each other. Gillian joins them. She is giggling.
“I guess little miss get whatever she wants, didn’t handle this news well.”
“Not mine nor Claire’s problem. She knew I had no interest in her.”
“Class. May I kindly have your attention. Let's do roll.” When he gets to Claire’s name, Jamie can't resist and answers,
“The Fraser's are here.”
“Thank you James.” He says dryly.
Their other teachers, if upset by having a married pregnant couple in their class, hide it better then Mr. Duscany. At lunch, Claire is able to answer the other part of Gillian's question. She and a lot of their other friends listen intently.
“Marriage is like a never ending date. A completely unsupervised never ending date. Jamie and I are living with his family, for now. We share his room. It is a bit weird as we know his sister and parents are there but..” She flushes a bit and Jamie takes over.
“But we are still very much together.”
“Brilliant! Sex whenever you want. You lucky lad.” His mate Angus replies.
“And the responsibility of a coming child. We love the wee peanut nae doubt but lads, always slip on a wellie. Trust me, as sweet as it is being married to the love of my life, it would have been sweeter if we were older.”
“Totally get that. But still sex every night.” Rupert says.
“It isn’t just the loving. It is someone I can bare my soul to and have her do the same. A soul connection.” From a couple tables over, Geneva huffs, flips her hair , and turns back to the others at her table.
“God how I love you Jamie.” Claire loudly says. It was bad enough when the spoiled brat was flirting when Jamie when they were just dating but he is her husband now. She takes his lips in a gentle kiss. Ahhs from the lasses and cheers from the lads, draw the attention of the lunch monitor, Mrs. Fitzgibbon. She slips over.
“Sorry Claire and Jamie. I know you are married but the rules still must be followed.” She softly says.
“Right. They can't be about that .” from the jealous Geneva. Mrs. Fitzgibbon, no dummy, knows what she is about.
“Congratulations on your marriage and coming bairn. Young you may be but true love will win out. You please come to me with any questions or concerns.”
“Thank you so very much Mrs. Fitzgibbon.” Claire gratefully says.
“My special students call me Mrs. Fitz. You and your husband may also.” She tells them with a wink. They wink back.
“Thank ye Mrs. Fitz.”
“Eat now lads and lasses. Especially you Claire. The baby needs it.” With a smile she starts too. She watches Geneva out of the corner of her eye. She sits with her head down. Serves her right, to go after her man.

Christ Church Episcopal School is formed by the Rector and Vestry of Christ Church in the summer of 1959. CCES graduated its first senior class and received its official accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) in 1972. In 1995, the Middle School building on Wenwood Drive opens to fifth through eighth grades. The International Baccalaureate Diploma program was authorized for grades 11 and 12 in 1999. In 2002, Upper School students move into their new building at the start of the January term. In the fall, Lower School students move to the Cavalier campus, to the completely renovated building formerly occupied by the Upper School. For the first time in its history, all CCES students in grades Primer through Twelve are united on a single campus. In 2005, The Chapel of the Good Shepherd is dedicated in September, providing all students with a sacred space for weekly worship. Sited in the center of the Cavalier campus, the chapel stands as a powerful symbol of the school’s Christian foundations and Episcopal tradition.
