“You think immediately of this distinctive Daito product, and its unusual firing behavior. And there it is: that is advertising. Through the product itself, without doing anything else in particular, Daito is controlling your mind, making you think of their wares whether you meant to or not, and whether you want to or not.”

“I mean...”

“The same goes for every aspect of its design. The needlessly immense silhouette makes the product unmistakeable, even at a distance. The playful designs of its many colorful coatings are both visually striking and childishly endearing to unwary observers. And we need not even discuss the insidious jingle from actual advertisements for this particular item.”

“I dig that song.”

“Do you? Or has Daito precisely engineered it to appeal to you despite yourself, despite your actual authentic tastes and preferences, overriding your very individuality to inject into your mind an inescapable earworm that whispers to you even as you sleep: buy, buy, BUY?”

Ornaments: Cuddly Throwback, Chasing Kitsune

Origin & Description: Years ago my family had a super-cute dog named Cheyenne. One day in a horse barn (long story) my dad was forking down hay while Cheyenne lay in the aisle watching. Dad stabbed the next pile of hay and suddenly a mouse ran out from underneath it. It darted away through the barn, zipped past Cheyenne - and in one swift motion our adorable puppydog snapped it up. Dad stared at him in horror. Cheyenne looked up, the mouse's tail still twitching where it dangled from his jaws, and wagged.

That's pretty much the vibe of Two-Tailed Fox (or "Twin-Tailed Fox," as I constantly mistype it.) Daito's second entry in the Compendium Exoticorum*, Two-Tailed Fox is the adorably murderous rocket launcher to go with their adorably murderous scout rifle Jade Rabbit. Each pull of the trigger fires two homing rockets, one Void and one Solar, with different effects; the Void rocket suppresses abilities similar to Tractor Cannon or a Titan's Suppressor Grenade while the Solar deals burn damage over time. Being on the wrong end of both sets an enemy ablaze and keeps them from retaliating at the same time.

* which by the way is what I'm calling this now. it's Latin!

Also you lock on to the target by looking through a little viewfinder on the side of the weapon like the fold-out screen on a camera except that this little screen has a little fox on it that makes an angry face when it acquires its target. The Cuddly Throwback ornament redoes Two-Tailed Fox in Jade Rabbit's original color scheme and changes the fox on the targeting viewfinder to a bunny that makes an equally amazingly cute angry face when locked on. Chasing Kitsune, a preorder ornament for Shadowkeep, goes for a spookier vibe with racing skeleton foxes along the side.

As if Two-Tailed Fox's entire aesthetic weren't enough, its lore tab is a genuine Guardian anime theme song that I cannot do justice to and must quote in full:

I love everything about this. "Chaos! Fire! Chaos! Fire!" yup, sounds like Guardians! I really hope this anime ("Shining Kitsune"?) is a real show in-game that kids in the City really watch.

The regular civilian humans of the City have an interesting relationship to the half-mad demigods that live alongside them. We represent impossible strength - however much genuine power Guardians wield, in the eyes of the City we have even more - and a near-divine hope, the closest thing to a literal statement from a literal god that humanity is meant to survive. But like the Dead Orbit faction, which maintains that the Traveler brings nothing but trouble and we'll never be able to rebuild until we leave this system behind, a lot of civilians also feel like the presence of the Guardians paints a big old target on their collective backs. And they're not wrong. Ghaul wouldn't have bothered with our solar system at all if the Traveler weren't here; neither would the eliksni, and we would have been at most a speedbump for Crota and the Hive. Rasputin has a good reason for building a threat profile on Guardians. There may very well come a day when humanity's greatest threat is its alleged defenders.

But in the meantime civilians just have to deal with some unusual #LastCityProblems; for example, falling Guardians. In keeping with Bungie's incorporation of player behavior into the game universe, the longstanding Destiny tradition of jumping off the Tower at random is something Guardians actually canonically do, to the extent that Destiny 1 has a Tower PA announcement asking us to Please Stop. In Destiny 2 the new Tower has netting beneath several balconies, presumably to catch corpses before they drop 30 stories onto the unsuspecting populace. The extensive library of dance emotes also means Guardians canonically get down a lot more than your average human. City inhabitants relax by watching Guardians compete in televised Crucible deathmatches and incredibly dangerous Sparrow races. And I mean...imagine a super-powered iteration of pro wrestling where you knew all the violence was real but no one involved would be permanently harmed. It'd be fantastic. We're probably just as valuable as entertainment as any sort of defense. Civilizations rise and fall, but humans will always love a good show.
