"Please, I need you, Villain, please," Superhero begged as they resumed their compressions. They pumped Villain's chest harder and harder. They would rather have Villain be alive with a few broken ribs than dead because they didn't try hard enough.
"Supervillain, I think--"
"Scan them again!"
With a sigh, Right Hand aimed the scanner at Villain. "No vital signs detected. No sign of life."
"Supervillain, I think--"
"Your scanner is wrong. Find a different one. Find me something to help! Make yourself useful!" Supervillain screamed at Right Hand.
Right Hand put a gentle hand on top of Supervillain's. "They're gone, Supervillain. Villain is dead."
Supervillain shook their head, but stopped pumping Villain's chest. "No. We just need to--"
"Whatever Hero did to Villain, it killed them. They're gone."
Supervillain stared down at Villain's face as tears welled up in their eyes. "They just had a headache."
"I know," Right Hand said gently. "I know."
"They were just sitting and talking with me," Supervillain sobbed. Villain was dead. Villain was dead and it was Hero's fault. "I should have been faster. If I had just gotten here faster."
"There's nothing we could have done. Hero's power destroyed all of Villain's vital functions, look," Right Hand pointed to the reading on the handheld. "It's a miracle they weren't killed on the spot. They were always stubborn."
Supervillain gave a weak chuckle. "They were. Wouldn't quit even if we told them to. Wouldn't die right away, too, it seems."
"Exactly. There was nothing anyone could have done, Supervillain. Don't go blaming yourself for this. It isn't your fault."
Supervillain stared down into Villain's face once more, anger rising in their belly. Villain was dead. Villain had been killed when they were young and in their prime. And there was only one person responsible for Villain's death. "No. It's Hero's." Hero would pay for what they did to Villain. Painfully.

"Charlie, try and stay calm. He might be able to save him!"
14, 15, 16--
Alastor pushed his interlaced palms rhythmically into Lucifer's unmoving chest. Charlie was trying to keep her hysterics under control while Vaggie tried her best to soothe her. She was also on standby to take over in case Alastor got too tired to continue.
"-29, 30!"
He bent over, tipped the angel's head back, pinched his nose closed and breathed long and deep, filling Lucifer's lungs with life giving air.
"One!" Another breath. "Two--"
Lucifer coughed weakly, taking a shaky breath, the first on his own in over three minutes.
"He's breathing!"
Charlie dashed to her dad's side, wanting so badly to hug him tight but knew that it wouldn't do him any good until his breathing stabilized more. Instead, she cradled him gently, brushing her hands through his hair while her tears of relief fell onto his cheeks like fresh rain.
A weak smile from Lucifer. "Hey, Char Char."
Then his gaze fell to Alastor who was slipping back into his jacket. "You know...CPR is...a lot less sexy...than movies make it...seem. I think you...cracked my ribs."
Alastor couldn't restrain the barking laugh that ripped through him.
Okay so I picked āflatlineā but itās not... EXACTLY flatlining. His heartās kinda still going, so it only sort of counts but who cares anyway I got inspired by that one so thatās what itās aboutā
...this oneās a little heavy.

Warnings: serious injury, mention of broken bones, CPR is necessary
It happened so fast that even when he looked back on it later, Four still wasnāt entirely sure what happened.
Their group was standing at the top of a cliff, discussing how best to climb down and studying the long fall below. Wild jumped out with his paraglider and was making lazy circles in the air while he studied the cliff, pointing out what looked like a less steep area for them to climb down.
Theyād all just decided it was the safest way when something caught Fourās eye, something small and fast zipping over their headsā
An arrow?
...headed directly for Wild.
āChampion!ā he shouted, but Wild hadnāt seen the arrow, and couldnāt turn fast enough to do anything.
It flew straight at him, slitting a hole right across Wildās paraglider and catching it at the perfect angle to rip the top nearly in two.
Four watched almost in slow motion as Wild let out a single shocked yelp, the arrow embedding in his arm, then dropped like a stone through the air. He fell out of sight into the trees below them, but only seconds went by before Sky and Wind were already leaping down after him, their faces white as they snapped open their own gliders.
Four shook himself out of his shock and began frantically searching for the best way down the cliff, Twilight slamming a mask over his eyes and shooting an arrow into the forest behind them.
Four registered a scream from a monster as he began to go down the less steep side Wild had spotted only moments ago, and seconds later Twilight was beside him, his face drawn with worry. The others stayed back to fight the monsters that were running out of the woods, but Four knew they had the small group handled.
Wild was their priority.
They reached the bottom and Twilight turned into a wolf, nose in the air already sniffing. His ears perked, and Four hopped on his back before he tore off into the woods, paws pounding against the ground.
Fourās heart was in his throat as they ran, heart beating almost as loudly as Twilightās pawsteps. Heās fine, surely heās fine, he can survive a fall from that height, itās not likely but itās possible oh Goddesses please let him be okayā
Twilight nearly skidded to a stop, and Four had to clutch him in order not to be flung. He jumped off at Twilightās nudge, and the wolf turned towards a particularly thick section of bushes, shoving his way through with Four following.
And on the other side was Wild, snapped twigs scattered all around him, lying in a small smear of blood.
Twilight practically threw himself forward, changing into a hylian as he moved, and Four ran up beside him in horror. Wild lay crumpled in a heap among the bushes, blood trickling from his nose, his arms both at odd angles. The offending arrow stuck up out of his shoulder, but Four barely noticed, his gaze stuck on the rest of him.
āWildā Champion, can you hear me?ā Twilight said frantically, fluttering his hands overtop of him, unsure of what to do. Four took a slow step closer, unable to look away from Wild, eyes glued to his chest.
Wild was still.
Too still.
āLink, come on,ā Twilight choked out, and Four dropped to his knees beside him, still staring at his chest.
āHeās not breathing,ā Four said suddenly, the realization like a splash of cold water. āTwi heās notāā
Twilight made a choked noise and Four lurched forward, carefully setting his head over Wildās chest.
A thin, thready beat met him.
āHeās not gone yet,ā Four gasped, and looked at Twilight, his face twisted in horror, eyes shiny. āWe donāt have any fairies, we need Hyrule, you gotta go get him.ā
Twilight stared between him and Wild with an agonized expression, but then he bolted back into the woods, shifting into a wolf as he went.
Four turned back to Wild, and breathed out, panic threatening to overwhelm him.
Not right now, you need to get him breathing again! his brain shrieked, and Four quickly moved to make sure Wild was in a good enough position.
Then he started rhythmically pressing on Wildās chest, trying to remember the exact technique to get him breathing.
It had been a long time since part of him had read that medical book, but he still remembered most of what to do. Up and down in a regular beat on the chest, then breathing air back into the personās lungs, back and forth to get their breathing going.
He just hoped it would be enough until Twilight came back.
Distantly he heard Sky and Wind run up, heard their gasps of horror, saw in the corner of his eyes as they kneeled at his side, but his focus was on Wild, and trying to get him to breathe.
Push down hard, but not too hard, stop and breathe into his lungs, start the compressions againā
More footsteps pounded next to him, and a hand suddenly pulled at his shoulder, despite how Four tried to throw it off.
He couldnāt stop, he had to keep going or Wild would be in an even worse state when Twilight came back, he might not even be able to be savedā
āFour, we have Hyrule, you need to let him work!ā a voice shouted, and Four stopped pushing, letting the hands tug him backwards.
He watched almost dazedly as Hyrule moved to where heād been kneeling, hands glowing a bright, intense blue. Warriors was next to him, saying something as he felt along Wildās neck and shoulders, but Four could only watch in silence, blood roaring in his ears.
Please let it have been enough please let it have been enough pleaseā
Wild jerked slightly, and Four heard a gasp of relief beside him, Legend pulling a shaking Hyrule back from Wild. The traveler began to argue, but Legend didnāt budge, and when Hyrule nearly fell over, the veteran pulled him further out of the way.
Four could only watch as Wild slowly stirred, Warriors working to make sure Hyrule had done what heād needed. Wildās eyes flickered uncertainly, and blood still trickled from his nose, but he was already trying to sit up, Warriors firmly stopping him from moving.
āHeās breathing, heās okay, you and Hyrule did it Four,ā Twilight breathed from next to him, and Four could only nod, still watching Wild.
The champion couldnāt even keep his eyes open all the way, and Time knelt next to him then, helping Warriors with the arrow Hyrule had accidentally healed into Wildās arm. Four watched as Twilight moved to grab Wildās hand, and the championās eyes closed again, face creased with pain.
Four swallowed. Heās fine, heās fine heās fine heās fine heās fine.
Sky gave him a concerned look from where he was kneeled, and moved closer to him, a hand settling over his.
āAre you all right Smithy?ā he asked, and Four nodded yet again, reaching up to rub at his cheek.
His hand came back damp.
Four blinked in surprise, staring at the tears on his fingers and wondering when exactly heād started crying. Why was he even crying at all? He wasnāt hurt, and Wild was okay now, breathing and being tended to by the others. There wasnāt any reason...
A wet hiccup suddenly escaped him, and Sky moved forward and pulled him into his arms, rubbing his back when a sound more like a sob came out.
āYou did it Four, heās alive, heās okay,ā Sky said a bit shakily, and Four swallowed, trying not to utterly break down in Skyās arms.
He wasnāt usually one for hugging, at least not all the time. But under the current circumstances, the memory of Wildās motionless body still sharp in his mind...
He sank further into Skyās arms, and didnāt resist when he pulled his sailcloth over him, a hand running through his hair.
āHeās okay,ā Sky repeated quietly, and Four clung to those words like a drowning man.
ok, so Iām a lifeguard, trained and certified, all that pizazz.
And I just wanted to clarify something. CPR alone cannot bring someone back. CPR keeps oxygenated blood flowing through the body, prevented the body from shutting down and the person from going brain dead.
In order for your character to ājumpā back alive, there needs to be an electric shock, in a modern au that should normally be an AED and a lot of places have that somewhere in the facility somewhere, and in powered universes you can have an electrically powered person do it.
In fact, its almost more angst-filled to have character A doing CPR, knowing that as the time goes by, without an AED, without EMS getting there, the chances of character B coming back and making a full recovery are getting exponentially lower.
Not to mention CPR is VERY tiring, itās why lifeguards rotate who is doing the compressions, so if its just character A there to do the CPR, describing the burn of their arms, their back, their muscles all while fighting tears is something that would be very compelling for some readers.

Please note that this post is to help in the worst case scenario of someone experiencing a tonic-clonic seizure. All of the things mentioned are possible, but hopefully won't happen. At the end of the post I have written a best case scenario of what it looks like when everything goes right.
What is a Tonic-Clonic Seizure?
A tonic-clonic seizure is the type of seizure that probably pops into your head when someone says seizure. Think muscle spasms, shaking and unresponsive.
Call for Help, Start a Timer
If someone starts seizing, before you jump into action, take a breath. Either start a stopwatch or check and remember the time (to the minute) that the seizure started. This is very important as seizures can be very dangerous the longer they last, and the ambulance will want to know this information.
Speaking of ambulances, call your emergency service number. If you're in public, get someone passing by to call for you. Be specific; say something like "You in the purple shirt! Call an ambulance!". It's shown that people will just assume someone else is going to call if they're not told directly.
Okay, now it's time to start assessing the situation. Anyone who's done a first aid course before might be familiar with the primary survey: DRABC. If not,Ā hereĀ is a helpful link for anyone who wants to learn it when applied to general medical emergencies. This primary survey will focus on tonic-clonic seizures.
Danger
The first step of your primary survey is danger. You want to assess the danger to the patient and, more importantly, yourself. If a person is seizing in the middle of a road, wait until the road is clear to approach them (if it becomes safe to approach at all). You are of no help to the person seizing if you're hurt.
While we're on the subject: only move the person seizing if they are in danger where they are. If they're on the floor, they can't fall any further, so don't try and move them onto a bed or sofa. Place something somewhat soft and cushioned (rolled-up sweater, pillow, backpack etc.) under their head to prevent damage. Move things like flowerpots, end tables etc., away if they're likely to hit them.
Also, do not hold someone having a seizure down. Scenario one: the person is stronger than you, and you get dislocated joint. Scenario two: you are stronger than them, and they get a dislocated joint. Either way, bad idea. Their muscles can and will keep spasming no matter what you do. Let them thrash around. If anything that will hurt them if they hit it is out of the way, leave them be.
Once you have assessed danger and removed any potential hazards (if safe to do so), you won't be able to complete the rest of the primary survey until the seizure has finished; however, the information below is good to consider during the seizure.
Response
The person should start coming around within a few minutes of the seizure ending. Speak to them calmly and tell them what happened. Encourage them to sit up, preferably leaning against something. They will likely be disoriented for a while, which is absolutely normal. Be reassuring and let them know that they are safe.
When someone has a tonic-clonic seizure, they will be unresponsive, so there is no need to check their level of response during the seizure.
Once they have stopped seizing, you will need to check their level of response. First, call their name, or say "Can you hear me?" quite loudly into each ear (they may be d/Deaf or hard of hearing on one side). If they don't respond, try shaking their shoulder firmly. Finally, squeeze one of their fingertips quite hard. They are unresponsive if they don't react to any of those stimuli. This is good information to tell the ambulance crew when they arrive.
Airway
If you can, try and look in the person's mouth to see if there is anything obstructing their airway, especially if they were eating before they seized. While it isn't a massive problem for the moment as they aren't breathing (more about that in the Breathing section) when they come around, if there is something blocking their airway, they may choke. Keep in mind though, that a lot of people will clench their jaw when they seize. Do not try and pry it open, you might lose a finger (seriously, jaws are strong). Again, inform the ambulance crew when they arrive if you think there may be something in their airway. Even if you're wrong, better safe than sorry.
Whilst we're on airway: please, please, please do not under any circumstances put anything in the person's mouth. For a very long time, people have held the belief that preventing the person from biting their tongue warrants putting something in their mouth. Yeah, the person may bite their tongue. Yeah, it might bleed. Yeah, it'll hurt like hell. But, better a bitten tongue than choking on something. Seriously, just don't do it.
Breathing
So, like I mentioned before, a person having a tonic-clonic seizure won't be breathing. This is normal for a tonic-clonic seizure but it is obviously dangerous for the person as their brain won't be getting oxygen. There is nothing you can do to fix that they aren't breathing. They will hopefully start breathing on their own again after the seizure finishes. If the seizure ends and they don't start breathing, and the ambulance has not arrived, call emergency services back and let them know. Similarly, if the seizure lasts for more than two minutes, call emergency services again (official guidance in most places says five minutes but the brain starts to deteriorate with no oxygen after two).
If the seizure stops and the person does not start breathing for themselves, re-assess response and airway. If they are unresponsive and their airway is clear, move on to Circulation.
Circulation
Start CPR if the person is no longer seizing and is not breathing. It is imperative to note:Ā the person must not be seizing when you start CPR. If they are moving by themselves, do not start CPR. If they are moving, they do not require resuscitation, and you will crack their ribs for no good reason.
If you have never been taught CPR before, I will explain how to do it here; however, I recommend watchingĀ this videoĀ on how to perform CPR (the video is for an adult, but the same channel also has child and baby CPR videos).
Start by positioning yourself on your knees, facing the person's torso from the side. Place the heel of your dominant hand in the centre of their chest, directly on the sternum, between the nipples/pectoral area. There is a picture below for reference:
Place your non-dominant hand over your dominant, and interlock your fingers.
You can do two types of CPR: compression-only or compression and rescue breath CPR.
As the name suggests, compression-only CPR is where you only perform compressions. This is done by firmly pressing down on the chest by using your body weight. You should aim to press down around 1/3 of their chest (guidelines suggest 5-6cm, but this isn't always enough for plus-size people). You will need to push incredibly hard. You will feel their ribs crack; this is normal and, frankly, required for effective CPR.
You should pump their chest hard and fast, between 100 and 120 beats per minute. An excellent way to keep track of the rate is by humming "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees or "Another One Bites The Dust" by Queen and pushing at the same rhythm as the song. Do this continuously, swapping out with another person where possible when you become fatigued. CPR is tough work, and you will tire very quickly. There is no shame in needing a break.
Compression and rescue breath CPR has the same compression element (1/3 of the chest, 100-120 beats a minute, etc.) but with what are known as rescue breaths added. Please note: you are under no circumstances required to perform rescue breaths. If you are uncomfortable or not confident in doing rescue breaths, do compression-only CPR.
To perform rescue breaths, you need to tilt the person's head back slightly and pinch their nose. Then, form a seal around their mouth with yours, and blow for 2 seconds. You will need to do this twice and remove your mouth from theirs to look down the chest to check if their chest is rising in between the two breaths. Then start compressions again. You will need to perform 30 compressions, then two breaths, then 30 compressions, then two breaths, et cetera. Continue until emergency services arrive and you are told to stop. Swap out with another person when you get tired where possible.
If there is one available, get a defibrillator (so known as an AED). They tend to be in public places such as shopping centres and gyms. The machine will speak and tell you what to do. Most models also have LCD screens with instructions for those of you who are d/Deaf and HOH.
And that concludes first aid for tonic-clonic seizures! If you have any questions, or want to point out anything I missed, please shoot me an ask or a DM!
Apologies for the length of this, but I wanted it to be as comprehensive as possible for people who have never had training or been taught about medical emergencies.
I was researching for a fanfic, and apparently all security guards have to be fully first aid trained and cpr certified before they can qualify for the position. Which does raise questions around Ron, but it raises MORE pressing questions around Larry.
Warnings: poisoning, unconsciousness, cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, cpr, unclear character status
Team Leader walked into the kitchen of Base, surprised to see Smallest Teammate still up. "I thought everyone was asleep," Team Leader said as they stopped at the table where Smallest Teammate was heaping food from a take out box onto their plate.
"They are, but I'm starving." Smallest Teammate grabbed a pair of chopsticks from the bag on the table and began to eat.
"Didn't you all eat dinner?" Team Leader asked as they sat down. They had been gone most of the evening dealing with Organization's leadership and the repercussions of Whumper's escape from prison. While they were hungry, they were too exhausted and anxious to eat. But they knew they had to eat something or they would be useless for the rest of the team.
"Yeah, but, I'm still hungry. So I ordered some more food. Do you want some?"
Team Leader nodded and sniffed the box. "What did you order?"
"Noodles, tofu, and green beans. My usual." Smallest Teammate began to stuff food into their mouth with gusto. They made happy, little sounds as they chewed. "It's so good," they said with a mouthful of food, "try some."
Team Leader took a few green beans and took a bite. "Eugh, that's pretty bitter, Smallest Teammate. Is it usually that bitter?"
Smallest Teammate shrugged. "My mouth went numb a lot faster than normal. Maybe there's extra peppercorns in there."
Team Leader nodded and decided that perhaps a piece of dry toast was better. They didn't like the bitterness of the pepper corns, nor the numbness and tingling that came with them. "I'm making some tea, do you want any?"
Smallest Teammate shook their head and continued to eat. "Why were you gone so long?"
Team Leader sighed. "It was a long meeting. There was a lot to discuss. I don't know if we will have a good plan in the next few days or not. But we need to. Whumper can't be left to their own devices for long or we will be in deep trouble."
Team Leader's phone pinged from the other room. "I'll be right back," Team Leader said as they hurried out of the kitchen. It could be news on the plan to stop Whumper. Team Leader quickly read through all the notifications on their phone. None of them were important, but they needed to be sure.
"False alarm," they said softly as they walked back to the kitchen. "Anyway, we're still trying to figure out what to do. What do you think, Smallest Teammate?"
Smallest Teammate didn't respond. Thinking Smallest Teammate didn't hear them over the sounds of eating, Team Leader called out a little louder, "Smallest Teammate?"
But still Smallest Teammate didn't respond. Team Leader's mouth went dry as they crossed the threshold to the kitchen and could see Smallest Teammate on the floor, gasping for air.
"No!" Team Leader shouted as they hurried forward. Smallest Teammate had to be choking on something. Team Leader tried to pull Smallest Teammate to standing so they could do the heimlich, but Smallest Teammate was completely limp in their arms. "Hold on, I've got you. I've got you."
Smallest Teammate's head lolled on their neck as Team Leader quickly began the maneuver. But no matter how hard Team Leader pressed, Smallest Teammate's breathing didn't become easier. If anything it became more labored. "NNNNNNNNotttttttt ch-ch-ch-cho'nggggggg," Smallest Teammate gasped.
"What do you mean you're not choking?" Team Leader turned Smallest Teammate in their arms.
Smallest Teammate gasped for air, their mouth opening wide. Team Leader could see nothing obstructed their airway, or at least from what they could see. "F-F-F-Fooooood," Smallest Teammate managed to gasp out. "PPPPPPPPo--"
Smallest Teammate's words cut off as they struggled to breath. Poison. Poison had been the word they were trying to say, Team Leader was sure of it. "HELP!" Team Leader roared. They needed the rest of the team. "HELP!" They screeched as Smallest Teammate's eyes rolled into the back of their head.
Team Leader gently laid Smallest Teammate on their side and in the recovery position, hoping it would ease their breathing. "TEAMMATE ONE!" Team Leader shouted to the squad's medic. "GET YOUR ASS IN HERE PRONTO!
"Hold on, Smallest Teammate. Help is on the way," Team Leader murmured softly. "Smallest Teammate?" Smallest Teammate's loud gasps for air had stopped, their body completely still and the room suddenly silent.
"Smallest Teammate?" Team Leader said as they heard the sounds of the team hurrying towards them. Team Leader pressed their fingers to the pulse in Smallest Teammate's neck. "NO!" They shouted as they rolled Smallest Teammate on their back and began compressions. "You can't die, Smallest Teammate. You can't. Hold on!"
"What happened?" Teammate One said as they stopped in the doorway.
"Poison. I don't know what kind. But they've been poisoned. Hurry. They're not breathing, they're pulseless, and I don't know what to do other than CPR. Come on, Smallest Teammate, come on."
Team Leader never stopped their compressions as Teammate One began to order the rest of the team around. "Just keep doing that Team Leader, I'm figuring it out!"
Team Leader nodded. "Please, Smallest Teammate, just hold on. Hold on. Don't leave us yet. Come on, come on."
