“Can we pour a good deal of brandy in that tea?” Tony put his arm around Em and pulled her close, in a brotherly side hug. “I’ve had a day. I’ll tell you all about it after we break some of my very expensive plates. I’ve been meaning to get some new plates anyhow. I don’t like these ones anymore.”

“They’re not taking me, Emery.” She wasn’t sure how the young woman had found out, but she had managed to keep it under wraps so far. At least, while the Seeds were holding their end of the deal up. People were released from the bunkers, the prisoner transports had stopped--she had seen Joey herself. It made the knot in her chest unwind. “I’m going to them. It’ll be fine. I’ll be fine. I need you...I need you to stay here and make sure they hold up their end of the deal. I’m counting on you.” 

God dammit. John reached up to press his fingers to his head, it was throbbing. The Deputy had caught him by surprise with -- “Did you just hit me with a fucking shovel?” The Baptist hissed angrily from where he was on his hands and knees. He’d barely made it around the corner before the smiling yellow shovel had swung around to whack him in the head. Damn lucky he didn’t lose an eye but he was bleeding from his hairline. Teeth barred, the youngest Seed spat down at her feet before looking up at her, square in the eyes, fist pressed into the dirt hard. “You’re a sinner is what you are and I’m going to take my time scrubbing you clean.”
