He knew it was much more elaborate and grand than most teenagers' rooms, and served as another reminder that he was different from everyone else his age, but it was too comforting to make him feel out of place.

His tall white walls were filled with pictures of his family; his mother's kind smile as she looked at the camera, his father's proud grin as his son took his first steps towards him, Chloé tearing up when he had been the only one to show up for her birthday party.

Video games that gave him a chance to talk to people from outside his home, a large flatscreen that played all the movies his mother once starred in, a designer couch he could relax on after long and exhausting days.

It was where he could simply be himself; without the prying eyes of paparazzi, fans, or his employers. Where he could enjoy his personal hobbies; no uncomfortable photoshoots where he had to stand for hours on end with a fake smile, no fencing lessons where the other students charged at him too violently to be interrupted as a friendly match, no piano recitals where his father shook his head in shame everytime Adrien missed a note.

He could be who he wished he was; no one watching with disgust as he dressed a certain way, no suspicious eyes following him as he tried on makeup for the first time, no laughter from onlookers who only viewed him as his past and not his future.

His room was where Adrien Agreste ceased to exist and where she could finally be free.

Marinette hated her room, it was suffocating.

It was cluttered and organized in a way only the messy map inside her mind could explain. She tried to create safe spaces, like her sewing desk or her bed ― but even those became too much to be around at times. No matter what, it always felt she like something was crawling under her skin as she took in her surroundings.

The walls were painted a bright shade of pink, something her parents had personally done when they found out they were expecting a baby girl. It matched her bed comforter, her desk, her trinkets ― everything anyone had ever boughten her matched her walls; serving as a reminder to how they viewed her.

Her closet, full of the clothes she had personally customized but dared not to wear ― not when someone could see her in them and discover her secret, the diary she hid and the words she written in it that she knew would never leave her lips, the tear stains that reappeared on her pillowcase everynight when she was left alone with herself and had nothing to distract herself from the truth she wish she could deny.

Her mirror sat in the corner of her room, out of sight and out of mind. It was her third one she had replaced that year. Her father joked about how clumsy she was to always end up breaking them and she didn't bother to correct his false assumption, merely wearing a strained smile and nodding when he promised to buy her a new one. She wants to smash the glass into tiny shards everytime she catches a glimpse of herself.

The pink paint on her walls, the frilly dresses swinging from her hangers, the framed photographs of a child too young to know there was something different about her ― something wrong with her. Every second she spent in her room felt like another lifetime she was reminded of the person she was and what she couldn't escape.
