Florence (Firenze) is a lovely city, but it is entirely too small for the number of tourists it must accommodate! My most recent visit was on a cold and intermittently rainy day in January. Despite the season and weather it was “crawling” with tourists. There was a 2 hour wait to enter the cathedral. On that occasion most tourists were East Asians on their Lunar New Year holiday, but the tourist load is rarely light. As with many popular spots, it may become necessary to somehow ration tourist visits in order not to destroy that which the tourists have come to see. Rationing has already been instituted at some popular tourist destinations like Machu Picchu in Perú.
