Georgetown, Federal Power Plant and Watergate from the Terrace of the Kennedy Center, 1975.

In 1975 the Kennedy Center was almost brand new, and the Watergate scandal was slowly fading into history. The break-in took place in a building not visible. The power plant was still burning coal as the smoke suggests. A railroad spur connected it to the main line in Maryland for the delivery of coal and the removal of ash.

St. Anne is, in Christian myth, supposedly the mother of the Virgin Mary, and the cathedral at Apt is said to contain some of her relics. Anne is a popular Roman Catholic saint in many countries, especially francophone ones. The most famous pilgrimage church in Canada is St. Anne-de-Beaupré in Quebec.

¡Feliz Día de Santiago!

The Camino francés, by far the most popular route of pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela, begins in Roncesvalles. The venerable town at the Spanish foot of an easy crossing of the Pyrenees from St. Jean-Pied-de-Port in France where all too many pilgrims begin. Though the crossing is easy for those in good physical condition, it makes for an all too challenging first day for pilgrims who mistakenly begin in the French town and use the Route Napoléon into Spain shortly after an all-night flight from North America and then a train journey to St. Jean. The red door led to the albergue, a very large former monastery and at the time the photo was taken called a refugio, where pilgrims rested before beginning the 800 or so km trek across northern Spain.

Roncesvalles, called Roncevaux in French, has great importance for French culture. The hero of the great national epic poem Chanson de Roland was killed in battle here. It is thus of importance for literary pilgrims as well as religious ones.

Tours et Remparts d'Aigues-Mortes, Gard, 1984.

In 1984 Aigues-Mortes was not yet on the tourist radar, wrong side of the Rhône and thus not in "Province." The old salt flat city was a bit decrepit but amazing to visit. Now it is rather a tourist trap.
