There is a family legend that Rollon (Roland), hero of the French epic poem Chanson de Roland, was a native of the island where my paternal ancestors lived and thus most probably a distant relative. Perhaps, though there is little to prove it, and Roland may have been fictional in any case. French lessons with the forced reading of the poem, and my obsession with Spain and Spanish history which developed a little later sparked my interest. I was thus stricken with a bit of awe on my first visit to my grandmother's home town to discover this statue given by the French government to Âlesund.

Unlike all too many structures called "historic" merely because they are somewhat old, George Washington was instrumental in the construction of this building, and one of the first legal proceedings in it was the settling of his estate. Alas Washington did not live long enough to see the completed building.

My photo does not show the base of the monument marked by various graffiti and other symbols protesting what Columbus represents. In much of el mundo hispanohablante [forget for a moment that Catalan not Castellano is the daily language of Barcelona] Columbus is not viewed as a hero but rather as the harbinger of environmental and cultural destruction, damage which persists and damages lives a half millennium later.
