Aly & AJ - Sanctuary Genre: Pop

The sister pop duo continues their return to music after a 10 year hiatus that ended in 2017 with their comeback EP and album Ten Years. In 2019 they pick up right where they left off with soulful synth-pop bops that get caught in your subconscious.

Astrid S - Trust Issues / Down Low Genre: Synth-Pop

It was a busy 2019 for the Norwegian singer Astrid S, with these two EPs and numerous features on other people’s albums. Astrid has been around for quite a few years now, but there is a growing confidence in her craft by the 23 year old singer.

bülow - Crystalline / The Contender Genre: Pop

19 year old Canadian singer bülow continues her introduction into the music scene that started back in 2017 but with a heightened outputting now. Across two EP's, the raspy voice is compelling dancing through brooding and euphoric electronic backdrops.

Cautious Clay - Table of Context Genre: R&B / Pop / Soul

After dropping two of my favorite EPs of 2018, Cautious returns with is subdued and soothing R&B music. His voice has a tender yet confident feel that is sent off floating in atmospheric production that is all quite alluring.

Charly Bliss - Supermoon Genre: Alternative / Indie Rock

An extension of their fun 2019 sophomore album from earlier in the year by the New York area based rock band, Supermoon is a fun little rocking romp in a genre that really needed it. This was not a good year for the indie rock genre but exciting artists like Charly Bliss are working to keep the genre alive.

Crystal Skies - Constellations Genre: Electronic / Trance / Dance

One of the many great artists Seven Lions chose 2019 to really unleash on the world from his new Ophelia Label. The output from the electronic collective has been relentless and quite joyous with this possibly being my favorite non-Seven Lions project in a robust year.

Diplo - Europa / Higher Ground / Higher Ground (Remixes) Genre: Electronic / House / Dancehall

The man that never seems to sleep, Diplo was back to his normal busy self in 2019. Making these three EP’s while also forming two groups (LSD with Labrinth and Sia and Silk City with Mark Ronson) AND creating another side solo project of his own as Thomas Wesley, his Country/Electronic music fusing alter ego, Diplo is constantly churning out electrifying content and doesn’t seem to be slowing down.

Flume & Reo Cragun - Quits Genre: Electronic / Hip Hop

While building up anticipating for his upcoming new album, Flume dropped a highly enjoyed mixtape as well as this three track EP with rapper Reo Cragun. The rapping isn’t really my personal favorite, it’s suitable, but Flumes production is top notch as always on the project.

Freya Riding - You Mean The World To Me Genre: Pop

Before her gorgeous self titled debut album, London singer Freya Ridings released this powerful EP of ballads to be on the upcoming album. Her voice is sturdy, soulful and captivating throughout.

HVDES - Stand Alone Complex Genre: Electronic / Dubstep / Dance

Finding an escape in electronic music while in a rehab facility, the DJ/Producer HVDES returns with her brash yet enduring electronic music. Her sound is like a mixture of Deadmu5 and REZZ, and despite it’s darkness is quite compelling.

GRiZ - Bangers[1].zip / Bangers[2].zip / Bangers[3].zip / Bangers[4].zip Genre: Electronic / Dubstep / Dance

Despite dropping his sixth album early in 2019, GRiZ kept himself busy all year long dropping four short EP’s throughout the year. Every EP is a three song whirlwind of GRiZ high octane electronic music with jazz horns making their presence known.

Gryffin* - Gravity Pt. 1 (Remixes) Genre: Electronic / Future Bass / Dance

Before dropping his marvelous debut album later in 2019, Gryffin released some remixes of his 2018 sampler EP.

It’s quite a moment for British Pop singers right now, and the potent soulful voice of John Newman is one of those. This short EP is a good hold over while we wait for his follow up to his previous 2015 album.

Kwaku Asante - honeycomb Genre: R&B / Soul

Slipping in with a December release was the soulful vocals of London singer Kwaku Asante. I didn’t know much about Kwaku when I gave this EP a spin but was floored by the voice, I will definitely doing more research and will keep him on my radar.

Last Heroes - Moments Genre: Electronic / Trance / Dance

Another member of the onslaught that was Seven Lions’ Ophelia Records. Like their label-mates, Last Heroes are able to captivate with epic chill-inducing drops in there Future Bass/Trance landscapes.

Lykke Li - still sad still sexy Genre: Pop / R&B

Following up her stellar fourth album from last year, Lykke dropped off this interesting EP of remixes, b-sides and acoustic versions. Never thought I would hear a song of Lykke Li, Skrillex and Ty Dolla $ign, but I sure am glad it exists.

Madeaux - Club Demons Genre: Electronic / Deep House / Dance

Miami Producer/DJ Madeaux keeps his recent uptick in music coming with this Deep House EP meant to steam up the dance floors.

MitiS - Shattered Electronic / Future Bass / Dance

Another member of the Ophilia Records infantry headed by Seven Lions. Every other Ophelia artist has a flair for the cinematic and climatic drop to smack the listener with all the feels, MitiS is no exception to that.

MorMor - Some Place Else Genre: alt-R&B / Indie Pop

Last year’s debut EP, Heaven’s Only Wishful, by MorMor was one of my favorite of 2018. The Canadian singer follows it up nicely with this sweet and sensual EP on Indie Pop and soulful R&B blending.

MOSSS - Pale Blue Genre: Indie Pop / Soul / Alternative

On the opening song of LA based singer MOSSS, the sound is a subtle and gentle melody with breathy vocals, until the chorus hits and the drums temporarily crash in for a climatic crash of emotions before dissipating again. It’s a perfect showing of MOSSS’ subtle yet impacting music. I can’t wait to hear more from the new artist.

Phantoms - Disconnect Genre: Electronic / House / Dance

The LA EDM duo returns with a short but effect EP of house and Synth-Pop dance tunes.  Ever since their debut 2015 EP Broken Halos it’s been quite the steady ascent for the duo, one I don’t see flattening out anytime soon.

Raja Kumari - BLOODLINE Genre: Hip Hop

Indian-American female rapper Raja Kumari comes in looking for skulls to crack with this electric EP. She’s been around the industry for awhile now as a songwriter but is ready to step out in front, on her own.

Ryahn - Light Blue Genre: R&B / neo-Soul

Light Blue is a delicate and evocative debut project from the Florida native singer. There’s notes of ANTI-era Rihanna, with some Jazmine Sullivan and a sprinkle of Beyoncé influences in the sound that’s quite effective.

Skrillex - Show Tracks Genre: Electronic / Dubstep / Dance

Skrillex gifted fans with this two track EP showing the producer still has a magic way behind the boards. His bigger output is listed above in his collaboration EP with Boyz Noize, as well as the GRAMMY nominated one off single with Boyz Noize and Ty Dolla $ign and there’s rumors of a Jack U project in the near future. We can only hope on the last one until we hear more. #prayerhands

Super Duper - Vessels Genre: Electronic / Dance

Super Duper’s tracks are usually absent of vocals but still have such vibrant human life present in his cinematic tracks. His tracks have a great duality of relaxing moments to thunderous wake up calls that smack the ear drums.

Summer Walker - CLEAR Genre: R&B / Soul

Before later in the year dropping her sultry sophomore album Over It, the Atlanta singer quietly released this intimate EP of slow jams. It’s been a bit difficult of a time for the singer with the increased attention Over It gave her. She has been vocal about her challenge dealing with her anxiety, where there’s been talks of an early retirement. I personally hope not; the world needs more soul music like this.

Teeko & B. Lewis - Build Genre: Electronic / R&B

Singer B. Lewis caught my attention last year with his EP with producer Falcons. He managed to grab it again with this collaboration with producer Teeko creating a vibrant and unique electronic world of Synth-Pop, G-Funk and Soul music.

TNGHT - II Genre: Electronic / Dance

The electronic duo of Hudson Mohawke and Lunice finally returns with their second EP after 2023’s whirlwind EP that still today is flexing its influence muscles on the genre. II is another electrifying output of breakneck Trap influenced Electronic beats meant to excite and elate.

XYLØ - pretty sad / yes & no Genre: Synth-Pop

With the departure from the group of her brother, singer Paige embarks continuing on with the XYLØ name now as a solo artist. Dropping two EPs in 2019 it shows the American singer is not slowing down being on her own, if fact she’s speeding up.

Zacari - Run Free Run Wild Genre: alt-R&B

The Top Dawg Entertainment singer first turned some heads with his features on Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. and the Black Panther Soundtrack. On his first solo project Zacari shows his unique voice is not where the individuality and creativity ends. Run Free Run Wild is not like anything else out there but is a great, and introspective form of alt-R&B music with Hip Hop, Indie Pop, Alternative and Electronic influences.

AlunaGeorge - Champagne Eyes Genre: alt-R&B / Electronic

The London duo AlunaGeorge took big step in their sound for me on their 2016 album I Remember. Champagne Eyes continues that right where they left off, with their infectious electro-R&B that has a sexy vibe while also enticing you up on your feet and moving.

Ama Lou - DDD Genre: R&B / Soul

New comer Ama Lou stealthily sneaks on the scene with this understated but impressive debut EP. The British singer is being compared to her tour-mate Jorja Smith which is an aped comparison in both of their sultry and jazzy R&B.

AUGUST 08 - FATHER Genre: alt-R&B

88rising is establishing themselves as quite the unique record label/collective. They started consisting of Asian rappers Rich Brian, Keith Ape & Higher Brothers, but have built quite the R&B ranks with NIKI, Joji, Rina Sawayama and AUGUST 08. In a busy 2018, the label’s compilation album Head In The Clouds, Joji’s BALLADS 1, and this EP by AUGUST were my personal favorites. AUGUST’s emotive, raspy voice along the stripped back and ominous production leads to a impacting project with a diversity of relateable emotions.

Au/Ra - X Games Genre: Pop

The 16 year old singer drops off her second EP and a noticeable progression is already happening in her music from her debut EP a year ago. There’s a maturity and levity in her voice and songwriting beyond her years. The low lit, alt-R&B inspired backdrops help create uneasy ground for the listener to hold on to the vocals.

boygenius - boygenius Genre: Folk / Indie Rock / Alternative

Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridges & Lucy Dacus are three of the most admired artists in the Folk Rock genre today. While touring together at different times they each formed friendships and rather than just sharing features back and forth on each other’s albums they all decided to make a group project together and the result is this heartfelt project. Across the project they each take turns taking the lead over the six emotionally gripping songs. Hopefully, boygenius is not just a one-time project for the supergroup.

Charlotte Gainsbourg - Take 2 Genre: Synth-Pop

British-French actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg slides in at the end of the year with this short but exhilarating EP. The keyboard heavy tracks are a burst of 80’s inspired funk with the seductive, breathy singing from Charlotte bouncing about.

Charlotte Lawrence - Young Genre: Pop

After four years of slowly releasing songs, 18 year old LA singer/model releases her debut EP.  Young is a fitting title as this project is full of youthful exuberance. In her acknowledged youth, Charlotte’s music wears on its shoulder a full awareness of naivety. There is a intentional leaning into the uncertainty of the future that comes with youth. She is aware there are still many lessons to be had in life, but is not letting those unforeseen lessons limit her in the now. It’s takes some wisdom beyond her years to effectively implement that in her art so confidently.

Clairo - diary 001 Genre: Indie Pop

Amidst allegations of being an “industry plant” (which I don’t personally believe) Claire’s music got a little lost in the fray. Despite if she got a bit more help then she leads on in beginning her career, that doesn’t negative that her delicate pop music is quite appealing and enjoyable. The 20 year old singer effectively uses minimalism and tenderness as tools at her disposal.

Dermot Kennedy - Mike Dean Presents: Dermot Kennedy Genre: R&B / Pop / Soul

The voice on Irish singer Dermot Kennedy is something to truly marvel at. There’s a raw, unfiltered passion and power in it that fills the tracks effectively. I can see a lot of crossover potential from R&B/Soul, to a jaunt in a country or folk song to being featured on an Electronic or Hip Hop hook. When the industry catches on, don’t say I didn’t tell you.

Diplo - California / California (Remixes) Genre: Electronic / Dance

Diplo must really dislike sleep because he seems to never take a second off. Between a rigorous travel schedule, Diplo also managed to start two new groups (one with Sia and Labyrinth and another with Mark Ronson) drop a Major Lazer Mixtape and compilation album as well as these two solo EPs. California shows the voodoo that Diplo has to make a track amazing no matter who’s on it. The feature list on this EP is mostly artists I don’t particularly care for (not including Satigold, MØ and GoldLink), but Diplo is a wizard on the boards and all of the songs are entertaining.

Falcons & B. Lewis - Daydrift Genre: R&B / Electronic

Producer Falcons and R&B singer B. Lewis combine for this sultry piece of futuristic R&B music. The two work well in tandem creating music that is a mixture of The Weeknd’s moody and dark themes and a more electronic soul pallet like Kelela. It leads to a somber yet bouncy vibe that sneaks up on you.

London singer Grace Carter’s debut EP will give you all the feels! Why Her Not Me is a collection of beautiful and relatable ballads meant to hit you hard in the heart.

Ina Wroldsen - Hex Genre: Pop

Norwegian singer Ina Wroldsen is able to evoke such mystery and drama in each song, it makes a small project like this four song EP feel longer. There is a depth conveyed in a very short time frame that makes the individual songs all impacting; which is compounded across the whole project. Despite being so short, this EP will stick with you.

KaraJishi - Realm Genre: R&B / Neo-Soul

Rock instrumentalist Ben Strick and Dominican singer Elijah Blake combine forces for this compelling EP combining experimental piano driven instrumentals with the soulful voice of Blake. Surface level this a bit like standard R&B, but the nuances added in Ben’s production are subtle and reward paying close attention. I feel there’s definitely more room for experimentation in future releases but this EP gives some solid ground to begin for the duo.

King Princess - Make My Bed Genre: Pop / Alternative

A fitting first artists signed to Mark Robson’s new label, there’s a oldies vibes to King Princess’ voice yet her music still feels rooted in 2018. This nostalgic feel to modern music is exactly what Mark Ronson has perfected over his career. There’s a hidden layer of power in the vocals that at first come off as understated and sensitive but slowly flex their muscles. Make sure you check out her newest single “Pussy Is God” in the bonus. A thumping track that’s an LBGQT anthem and an exciting peek into how her music can continue to progress. And the track bangs!

Kim Petras - TURN OFF THE LIGHT, VOL. 1 Genre: Synth-Pop

Kim Petras has been making a name for herself the last year dropping a handful of vibrant electro-pop singles. She made headlines 10 years ago when she was making the rounds on German Television Shows as a budding young musical talent when at age 16 she became one of the youngest on record to have a full gender reassignment surgery. She finally dropped an EP, but it wasn’t what most fans were probably thinking. Instead of an EP containing her many infectious singles released, Kim dropped a Halloween inspired EP that sounds like someone made Michael Jackson’s famous horror song into a whole mistape. The sound is still very much in her main category as synth-pop, but the production is more ominous and intentionally brooding. The lyrics use being scared, darkness and death as metaphors. Despite it maybe being not what fans expected, it still slaps! What Kim shows here is she's not just a collection of catchy as shit songs. She can collectively carry a whole project theme.

KWAYE - Love & Appreciation Genre: alt-R&B

After dropping his stellar debut EP Solar last year KWAYE returns again only increasing my personal hype on the Zimbabwean singer. His story of discovery is pretty unique. While at a study abroad program in LA from Brighton majoring in African-American Studies he played a demo he made for an Uber driver. The Uber driver previously was an A&R and connected KWAYE with Mind of a Genius head ZHU who signed him. Now two EPs later you see the confidence in his smooth craft building and we all are the benefactors.

Little Dragon - Lover Chanting Genre: Pop / R&B / Electronic

Lover Chanting is a small exploration by the group into a bit more of a dancey sound. I’m not sure if the intentions of this EP were as a sneak peak to what their sixth album may be or if it’s just a temporary vacation they wanted to share a few snapshots of. Regardless it’s a fun little collection of bops, I personally would like to see a whole album in this vernacular from the group.

Loote - single. Genre: Synth-Pop / Indie Pop

New York duo Loote show off a knack for making catchy and infectious pop songs that really make themselves at home in your subconscious. I’m meaning going through your fridge and pantry for snacks and critiquing your cable sports package at home. In a past life lead singer Emma Love Block wrote jingles for commercials and children’s shows. Which definitely honed her pen to be able to write such potent choruses, that work beautifully with Jackson Foote’s mixture of Indie and Synth-pop production.

Madeaux - Burn (Remixes) / LIMBO Genre: Electronic / House / Dance

After releasing his first full length LP early in 2018, the American producer stayed busy releasing these two EPs. The first obviously being other producers providing some flame remixes to his invigorating album (more on that in my Top Albums list). I can’t say any of the tracks are better than Madeaux’s originals but I always enjoy a good reimaginating. The second EP is a quick three track exploration into the six months of Madeaux’s life since Burn was released. “FEEL FREE” symbolizes the creative process and the freedom and clarity it provides to him. The title tracks speaks to a bit of the system getting in the way and creating a frustrating cycle that an artist must navigate to get to the joyous ending that is “HIGHER” the final track. Madeaux apparently has more music to release in 2019. I personally can not wait to hear it.

MorMor - Heaven’s Only Wishful Genre: alt-R&B / Indie Pop

Fans of Toro y Moi and Blood Orange will probably really dig Toronto singer MorMor and his subtle and sweet synth-driven R&B. MorMor shows he’s got a mastery of the vibe across the airy, tender five songs on this EP. His music doesn’t reach out and grab you, but when you pay attention it’s definitely rewarding.

Moss Kena - Found You In 06 / One + One Genre: Pop / R&B

Introducing himself and his sweet falsetto to the world, London singer Moss Kena makes quite an impression here. Found You In 06 is his debut EP that is packed with some vibrant and sensual soul music. He follows that up beautifully with his second EP late in the year.

Radiant Children - TRYIN’ Genre: R&B

The London soul trio Radiant Children have a way for making their songs sneak up on you before their powerful choruses smack you in earlobe. “Go Left” is the perfect starting point with its jazzy beginning that sounds like it would fit in a Joss Stone record, before the chant-along worthy chorus bursts in with an empowered message. “Tryin’” has the same subtle jazzy beginning before going full Aretha Franklin when the hook comes in. This EP is only the beginning for the new group and I’m excited to see where they go next.

RAYE - Side Tape Genre: R&B / Pop

London singer RAYE is building up to something big. She’s obviously rubbing shoulders with the right people being featured on songs by Major Lazer, Charli XCX, Louis The Child and Jonas Blue. This EP is another flex of her rolodex with some of the up and comers on the London scene in Mabel, Stefflon Don, RAY BLK and Mr Eazi. The music is some smooth and sultry 2018 R&B with a 90s feel that screams heavy Aaliyah influences.

Seeb - Nice To Meet You Genre: Electronic / Dance

Norwegian production group makes the positive and negative complications of love still so damn fun to dance to with this debut. The duo turned trio originally made a name for themselves making remixes before dropping a few one off singles over the years. Nice To Meet You being the first curated project shows this group are only getting started.

SG Lewis - Dusk / Dark Genre: Electronic / House / Future Bass

Get your sunscreen and enjoy the sun kissed soulful Electronic tunes by British Producer SG Lewis with these two radiant EPs. SG’s sound is a mixture of melodic synth-based pop, smooth R&B and tropical house that makes for a luminous experience. Just remember to ask someone to get your back.

SOSUPERSAM - Priority / Priority Remixes Genre: R&B / Electronic

Priority is a short little soiree by the LA based DJ/singer that can be a club banger as well as a baby maker. Her hard hitting beats thump against your temple while her seductive vocals entice some sensual hip movement. There’s a hint of 90’s New Jack Swing influences which I personally really dig.

Super Duper* - VHS Genre: Electronic / Future Bass

I didn’t know who Super Duper was when I saw him open for Petite Biscuit but I was instantly intrigued. His songs have a way of lulling you into a false sense of security then having a moment that provides a jolt; causing instant head bobbing.you may need a neck brace.

TOMI - What Kind Of Love Genre: Alternative / Indie Rock

Singer and guitarist TOMI picks up right where she left off on 2017’s Used To with another EP of empowering anthems. The American can really fill a room with her boisterous choruses that demands your attention. The music isn’t just attention thirsty, they also are catchy as hell.

Youngr - Obsession Genre: Electronic / Synth-Pop

Early in the year Youngr released an enjoyable LP but it was this short funky EP later in the year that really caught my ear. Obsession is a unique and emphatic mixture of Pop, electronic and Hip Hop production. The closer “Welling Up” is a slow building track that when it explodes near the end is one of my favorite musical moments of 2018.
