He’s not used to affection

  So I’ve decided to play a Dragon Age...

as someone who swears a lot and writes fic, i live in fear of fucking up characterization that way and my only saving grace is saintly patient betas. i’m so sorry in advance ;.;

To be fair, you should hear the inside of my head from time to time. I am a lot more polite and reserved when I talk to people or type than I am internally. So, I feel like I can, to a point, get that.

But I also tend to draw highly on that whole thing of, ‘would this character use profanity? are they living in fear of what society would think of them if they did? Are they too young? Are they just too nice? Do normal words generally work well enough and when they swear everyone in audible range knows they’re fucked?’ because that’s... important. It’s a range of characterisation, y’know?

It’s like, I can imagine a character like Cloud swearing because I think it’d just slip out every so often, but it has to be the right kind of moment. With someone like Sephiroth, I once read something amazingly good where Zack said something like that things were ‘fucked up’, and it was hilariously perfect characterisation when Sephiroth echoed it back, because I could hear how awkward the words were from him, compared to Zack saying them far more easily.

I’m not going to say I don’t enjoy or want to see characters swearing at all in fics because swearing when done right can be an art form.

(It took me to early adulthood to loosen up enough to swear and not feel a mental block; I feel like I’m more relaxed for it.)

But the fic I was talking about - in that, by saying ‘profanity’, I didn’t just mean swears and curses, I meant... sexual language. And characters referring to others in a sexual way, or suggesting that people are doing things to each other (or would) in such a way that made me uncomfortable. Several times. 

And that’s what made me go ‘why subject your readers to this’ and ‘is it in character’ because a certain character said certain things about two other people in one specific instance that still has me going ‘you don't even really know him at all, do you? You scrape at the veneer of who he is, you get to the heart of his psychological issues, but you don’t know him as a person.’ 

i absolutely vote for percy and his quest to pick out 15 new appropriate names for himself that he felt were both true to him and respectful of his parents’/family’s legacy

8: briefly discuss your outlining process, if you outline

well partly I don’t because of That ADHD Feel WHen Your Brain Says Oh Good We Told This Story partly I actually do but’s it’s half almost complete scenes,  [VICTOR GETS ASKED ABOUT RUT PAPERWORK, MINAKO??? TOSHIYA I GUESS] and half scribbled bullet points. I don’t usually write long plotty stuff but I do sometimes need notes, so i have a scrap file with ideas and stuff. It tends to look like

victor moves to hatetsu

yakov scene

yurio reacts?

yuri finds out

yuuko?

makkachin scene, cute, fluffy, big dog kiss, yuri wonders why this dog knows him (later scene suggesting victor showed makka vids of yuri “this is your new dad bb”? run past kix or verity)
