Today is the 17th of Tammuz.
It’s a day of fasting and reflection in the Jewish calendar. A day that marks the beginning of a three-week journey of national mourning.
On this day, the walls of Jerusalem were breached nearly 2,000 years ago, leading to the destruction of the Holy Temple. It was also the day Moshe (Moses) broke the tablets after the sin of the Golden Calf.
It’s not just about what happened then. It’s about what’s happening now. in our hearts, in our world.
These “Three Weeks” remind us that even what feels strong and sacred can fall apart if we don’t stay awake and connected.
But we don’t just mourn, we transform.
The Lubavitcher Rebbe taught us to respond to pain by doing more good. So today, even as we fast, we add light:
More kindness.
More Torah.
More giving.
Because that’s how we heal the brokenness.
May this time of mourning be transformed into a time of rejoicing, with the coming of Moshiach, speedily in our days.
Let’s not just remember what was destroyed.
Let’s become the builders of what’s coming.
May our actions bring healing to our communities, and may we merit to see a world filled with peace, compassion, and unity.
