*Truth is to feel it slip away.* - The Abstract Placings I make are usually finished the same day I find the items (although not this one pictured - it’s morphed into something else). I find myself feeling a little like I’ve cheated, broken some unwritten art rule, like if I didn’t take a good long while to consider things and work on something it doesn’t have much value. And I realize this is a silly way to think about it, but also feels quite reasonable. - On the flip side (and somewhat an argument for the validity of considering something finished in one minute or one day as in one year, or one decade), I also don’t ever feel like I truly apprehend something, but rather am always chasing - the picture is a representation of the chase in a way, and I catch just (as Willem de Kooning puts it) “slipping glimpses” of what could be. - Lmk in the comments below: do you ever think about how long it takes to finish something, and if it feels too quick and easy, you have doubts? Do you believe something needs to have a lot of time and effort put in to have real value? - “Only Kinda Afraid of The Dark” (in progress, working title) Found objects and paper on canvas - #finishingart #thinkingaboutart #pdxartist #foundobjectart #garbageart #trashart #TheArtofEverything #Tao-E (at Portland, Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/CYFsnpsFhFC/?utm_medium=tumblr
