I know this is the “Anne Rice was an idiot who didn’t understand her own work” website, but it nonetheless baffles me whenever I see someone treat the fact that she didn’t frame Marius as some kind of big-bad final boss as a moral/artistic oversight rather than a conscious choice she could have made for a multitude of thoughtful reasons.

#why might a writer choose not to uniquely vilify an ‘evil’ character in a series concerned with the emotional complexity of monsters?#think!#I am aware that many of anne’s personal biases seeped through into her characters and marius is in some ways an example of that #but his worldview doesn’t go unchallenged by the text #especially when you get to pandora (but I think a lot of people just haven’t read pandora maybe)#I think him being ‘the voice of reason’ is an idea more so pushed by his staunchest apologists than one the text purports to be true #because other characters quite famously call him out for being childish and volatile #even amadeo (who worships him!)#his fallibility is actually quite an important part of his characterization and something he admits to frequently in his own novel #the fact that he’s not presented as a villain to be defeated doesn’t contradict any of that #nor does his fallibility contradict that he’s a complex character who is not wholly good or bad #because that's not the point #the vampire chronicles
