On my third read now, and it's interesting how the first two times, I didn't manage to catch just how many hints there were to Tobias becoming a nothlit, and I'm NOT just talking about the way it's essentially narrated after he's already become one. Rather, all the things about him being obsessed with flying, and him having spent time in his hawk morph before the mission even started without morphing back to human. I really do think people are right that he nothlit-ed himself intentionally.
