🌟 🌟 BOOK REVIEW🌟 🌟 💫 With all the hype surrounding it, “The Maidens” turned out to be a pretty disappointing follow up to the Author’s spectacular debut novel “The Silent Patient”. The book is set in the same universe albeit a bit earlier to the happenings of the earlier book. It’s a stand alone and anyone who hasn’t read the Silent Patient will have no issues following this. There’s a lot of good things about the book- the psychology aspects and deciphering of Greek mythological clues thrown along the way by the protagonist Marian is interesting. But while the ending of the first book elevated the whole book and gives you a shock value like no other, the ending here just spoils the whole 350 odd page effort. Where the earlier book had essentially just 2 characters, here the multitude of characters and subplots are just there without adding any value to the final proceedings. For example, the protagonist holds a support group and after the initial few chapters and maybe with the exception of Henry, are completely forgotten about until the epilogue! Even Henry and his antics add nothing to the overall ending. The open ended climax doesn’t really help either- I’d rather skip a sequel. Maybe a lot of my frustration has to do with the comparison and high expectation, but as a stand alone, The Maidens feels all over the place with ea slow start, some smart writing in the middle and a poor ending.
