Inspired by a friend’s visit, I went to The Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia. The quality and quantity of art is a bit overwhelmingly fantastic. Hi lights for me were: seeing a piece from Picasso’s blue period- talk about dementors, the portrait of the genius Barnes himself and all of the Matisses. A must see when in Philadelphia. #thebarnesfoundation #picassoblueperiod #jkrowlingdementors #matisse (at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiLMoS9OjBS/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I’ve always been drawn to the work of #AmedeoModigliani since I first came across it randomly at an exhibition I can’t remember the name of during a middle school field trip. I was so drawn to the elongated shapes of the subjects, almost stretching themselves from top to bottom, making sure that they could fit nicely in the frame. _ I then came across ‘The Blue Eyed Boy’ at @sandiegomuseumofart and it made me want to look further. I started to notice that in some works, the eyes were devoid of life almost “mask-like”, a shell of what that person presents. It wasn’t until his famous quote “When I Know Your Soul, I Will Paint Your Eyes” did I truly understand what was taking place. _ This outer shell we call skin is just that, a mask. Our souls reveal our true character and it connects to others through our “windows”. In traditional African history, masks were often to represent spirits of ancestors, and the person wearing the mask could have a dialogue between the community and ‘nature-related spirits’ (wiki). The lineage of these works are rooted in traditional mask making and sculpture. Which until revisiting this epic room in the @barnesfoundation did I understand how all the objects went together and how the histories are all needed to explain to art story. _ With #AfricanArt having a resurgence in the world, I wonder will the styles of sculpture as painting be revisited in new ways bringing back older traditions to create new realities. I for one, am excited at the possibility. _ Take a look at the video produced by #WHYYPhiladelphia with curators of #TheBarnesFoundation speaking on #Modigliani, #Picasso and the influence of African Art. _ #ArtAboveReality #LookWhatArtFound #Inspiring #Art #Curator #ContemporaryArt #CollectingArt #FineArt #ArtMarket #ContemporaryPainting #CollectArt #ContemporaryArtCollectors #LiveWithArt #ArtConsultant (at The Barnes Foundation) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bpj1xLQnYu2/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=12kiircgub34r
There’s no satisfaction than being satisfied with a painting when it’s not even finished. The imperfections make it perfect. #thebarnesfoundation #weekendgetaway #philadelphia #architecturestudent (at The Barnes Foundation)
Sometimes you gotta go back to the source to get information about the future, your future. I think here is a good place to start, think. As I approach the last ten days of Ramadan, the focus on self, sunnah and reflection of past and present are key to me. Speak to y’all soon.
