A long time ago I was a student at the Barnes Foundation. The teacher who was scheduled to teach our “second year” class got sick, so they brought in a series of replacements.Â
They were in the middle of a collection assessment so we had some heavy hitters come substitute. One of them was Rika Burnham from the Met… if you know… you know!Â
She stepped into a hornet’s nest and immediately got our attention by allowing us to break all sorts of rules. One of them was drawing in the galleries.Â
I was talking to my sister today about the “slow art” movement at museums and Rika’s name came up. She had written a chapter about her time with us at the Barnes… as it was as impactful to her as it was to us.Â
This was a quick drawing I did as a response to a question she posed during class… What do you see?
