Fellow TAZ Graduation/Steeplechase enjoyer came up with the iconic idea of a Steeplechase/Graduation crossover where they were actors on a layer kind of like Ephemera and of course I had to draw Argo as a regular dude and as well,,, Argo lmao.
Couldn't decide whether I wanted him fully blue so there's both, def want to do more of these soon đđ
I love how I managed to do his lil signature like that's how he'd sign it if he was a meet & greet sort of character hehe

Barry Bluejeans sits down at the bar, his legs welcoming the rest. The bartenderâs eyes have followed him since he walked in (or rather, followed the thing following him), and once she takes his order, she points to the creature that has curled up beside his chair.
âThat's not yours, is it?â she asks. The juvenile Absol blinks at her.
Barry shakes his head. âItâs just been-- Itâs been following me around all day.â And this is the calmest heâs seen it -- the young PokĂŠmon has been antsy, pacing around underfoot wherever he tries to walk. Like itâs trying to communicate something, he thinks. As far as he can tell, it hasnât tried to stop him from going anywhere. âWhy, dâyou know its trainer?â
âDoesnât have one. Thatâs why I was wondering, who knows, maybe you caught it,â she says as she slides him his beer. âItâs been howling its head off at any hour of the day, for the past month or so-- since it was old enough to yell, Iâd reckon. Bad for business.â
âItâs that young?â Barry asks. Itâs small, sure, but he thought it was just a runt.
âThink so. Used to be an older one around here -- more reserved, you know, actually yellinâ when it was useful -- but we havenât seen it around in a good bit. Nobodyâs sure why, but...â she shrugs. âWe can guess.â
âYeah,â says Barry, brow furrowing. âIs it following people around looking for a, uh, a parent, dâyou think? âCause I donât really specialize in young PokĂŠmon...â
âOh, it doesnât follow people around,â she says, leveling her gaze with his. He leans back a little. âIt never gets that close to anyone -- thatâs half the reason it hasnât been caught. So if itâs taken a shine to you, well... You be careful out there, hon.â

A full day later, the Absol is still following Barry around. It still seems agitated, he thinks, or maybe itâs just the regular kind of youthful energy. In any case, the magic coin that speaks in his voice gave him a place to investigate, so heâs trying to get that over with, and the pup can come with him if it wants.
But as he reaches his destination (a deep-looking cave, set into the mountainside), the Absol gets abruptly very upset. It runs back and forth from him, barking, trying to lead him away from the entrance.
Itâs definitely trying to warn him, probably that thereâs some danger awaiting inside. Barry frowns, considering. He could just walk away, disobey the coin. But something in his chest gets tight at the thought of leaving any stone unturned in his search for... for... whatever it is heâs looking for. And itâs that very feeling that drove him out here in the first place.
âIâll be quick,â he tells the PokĂŠmon, to its great dismay. âIn and out. Itâs real important. Why donât you, uh. Wait out here, where itâs safe? Iâll be back out in a jiffy.â (He doesnât want to think heâs going to die in there, but still -- the thought of endangering this practically-a-baby bothers him a lot more than endangering himself.)
But it follows him in anyway, proving just as stubborn as he is when he tries to dissuade it. When it realizes heâs still not going to follow him out, it follows behind more quietly, its stride low and anxious.
Theyâre pretty deep when the Absol pup suddenly stands straight up, alert, and barks at him. He frowns, opening his mouth to question it, when he feels the thing it sensed coming moments before (days before, if heâs making an honest guess). A tremor wracks the cavern, making him stumble.
A small part of him wants to keep going -- see what he can find in the depths, hope the quake doesnât worsen. A larger part of him fears for his life, and even more for the pup thatâs not going to leave this cave without him.
Cursing, Barry turns and makes a shooing motion as he starts running back in the direction they came. âAlright, letâs get the fuck outta here!â
He realizes quickly that heâs going to outrun the Absol, itâs just so small, so he scoops it into his arms as he passes it. Thankfully, after a moment of confused squirming, it lets itself be carried. It barks as he goes (encouragement? anxiety? heâs not sure), and leans its head towards the turns he needs to take to get out.
And when natural light filters back into his vision, itâs a sheer miracle he keeps his footing as a heavier tremor cracks through the cave. Instinct older than his body tells him heâs not going to make it out. But just because he wonât doesnât mean--
Barry stops, and with the leftover inertia, he throws the Absol out into the light. He keeps running after that (just in case -- he still wants to survive). He sees it just begin to get back to its feet, desperately twisting around to look at him, and then it
--hurts really fucking bad--
and then itâs dark.
--
Outside, the Absol rises onto its hind legs, pawing at the collapsed boulders now blocking the way into the cave. It howls, and paces, and claws at the rocks, until it falls over itself scrambling back from the unnatural lightning that crackles over the stone.
âIâm-- Hey-- Iâm c-- Iâm good,â says Barryâs voice. The source of it rises from the rocks-- through the rocks-- cloaked in bright red and dark shadow. âItâs-- Itâs me. Iâm okay. Are you okay, little guy? Iâm-- I am real sorry about, uh, about how that went down.â
The Absol stares at him, shocked, for several seconds. Then it lets out a pleased bark, and runs once around him. Heâs... relieved that it actually understands who he is.
âSorry I didnât listen when you tried to warn me,â he says, hovering low to offer it a hand to sniff at. âI know what thatâs like, uh... Not beinâ listened to, when you know something badâs about to go down. Right?â
The Absol looks at him, head cocked with interest. Then it starts pacing again, looking just as antsy as it had before the cave. Maybe even moreso.
âBut you werenât followinâ me for two whole days just âcause I might go to this one cave at the wrong time, were you?â
It pauses in its pacing to stare at him, its eyes deeply intent -- more than they ought to be at that age. (Maybe itâs just natural for the species.)
âHey, bud, donât worry. Iâm practically immortal. I can get through just about any natural disaster there is.â And he sure as hell is gonna face another disaster soon, though itâs hardly something he could call natural.
He frowns suddenly, or at least his glowing eyes do the equivalent; the pupâs been anxious and agitated, howling at everyone about impending disaster, but not guiding people anywhere. Not knowing how to escape it. And it latched on to him.
â...Youâve been trying to tell everyone that somethingâs coming,â Barry says, barely a question. He glances at the sky. âNot soon, but... coming.â
The Absol barks again, eyes wide-- clinging to his words, maybe excited to finally be understood.
âListen, bud, I-- I know what youâre freaked about. I hear you. And I promise you, with ever fiber of my being, Iâm gonna keep it from happening. You donât gotta worry. Stick to problems you can save people from, and-- itâs gonna work out. Iâll make sure.â
It runs around him, barking even more, and he laughs a little. â...But youâre not just gonna leave it alone, are you?â
Barry knows the feeling. He produces a PokĂŠball, and it stops in front of him, eyes shining.
âAll right, little guy. You wanna help save the world?â
Honestly, I think this was the best route Travis couldâve taken with regards to a Balance homage in Graduation. Any actual cameos from old fan favorites wouldâve stolen the spotlight from the Thundermen in a not-so-great way (while most likely putting at least one person in an awkward voice acting situation)Â â but Gordyâs backstory, which avoids mentioning names but brings up some very familiar-sounding necromancers, skirts these issues perfectly while still functioning as a really heartwarming reference.Â
It feels organic, too â Gordy grew up in another world, raised by a found family who taught him that even necromancy could be used for good, for reasons other than giving us a mini Balance crossover. Specifically, Gordyâs history informs his opinion of Nua and his support of Fitzroy, because heâs seen worlds that arenât bureaucratic and restrictive like Nua is. He knows the hero/villain system as it currently stands is bullshit because he knows that the division of heroes and villains based off skillsets, the division that put his sweet and caring daughter in the villain track, is ultimately a harmful one. He spent his early youth afraid that he was inherently evil and dangerous, but two far more experienced necromancers were there to teach him that actions, not powers, determine morality, and now Gordy hates seeing a system that preaches the exact opposite (even with the general understanding that âheroicâ and âvillainousâ are arbitrary as far as alignment goes in Nua). Gordy has a reason, in the Doylist and plot-enhancing sense, for being who he is: because he is in a unique position to support the Thundermen as they chafe against Nuaâs expectations and restrictions, and itâs so beautiful how deftly Travis wove this all in with a nostalgic callback.
(Yet you donât need to have listened to Balance to understand all this. Gordy still stands on his own as a brilliant, heartwarming character even if you donât have an inkling who his family might be or why they had to travel so much for their work. His contrasting approach from the other adults of Nua, and his general compassion â for Fitz, for Rainer, for the dead â are still impactful. Thatâs yet another reason why it works so well, compared to a less ambiguous reference or in-the-flesh cameo.)
Gordy is a wonderful father, and at least to me, listening to Fitzroyâs meeting with him felt like coming home to a parentâs house and all the nostalgia it entails â if only for a short vacation, before returning back to something new and modern and independent and beautiful in its own right. If I wanted to try and be clever, which I do, Iâd say this type of easter egg strikes the perfect balance.

Listen I know that Rainerâs dad isnât Barry Bluejeans. Other litches exist and this is Travisâs universe, not Balance. Weâre going to get a really cool new character from Travisâs imagination and it gonna be awesome.
But I want it to be Barry Bluejeans. The comedic potential! The undying lord is a huge dork! Griffin giving himself the shovel talk! How it would connect the two campaigns, even if they shouldnât be.
