It would be funny if Nigel's dislikes were to be ignored but what if he dislikes the alchemist so much, that in his dislikes session would have "Varian" written in it. It just goes to show that the royal advisor would show hatred towards the alchemist.

The Housekeeper is Mrs. Crowley to her face, Hortense to her (few) friends, Old Lady Crowley to everyone else. The Steward (not a Castellan, that's for the other cities in Corona) is Nigel to his superiors, Mr. Nigel to the staff, Eddie when he loses at poker and takes a forfeit. The Captain of the Guards is Captain or Sir to most people, Cap to Mr. Fitzherbert, and Dad to Cassandra (and apparently her pet owl too). If he has a last name, or even a first name, nobody bothers with it. Nobody can see him as anything but the Captain, and that's how it's always been.
Cook is always Cook. She prefers it that way.
(They gave up trying to pronounce either of her names round about the thirtieth try. Some of the younger servants take a go at it, every once in a while. Only three people have managed it so far, and one of them only speaks in Horse.)
172. Reiteration
The slap isnât the worst sheâs had, not by a long shot, but itâs got venom behind it and it takes her completely by surprise.
âItâs not FAIR!â
Faith cries. She moans. She stammers and backs away from the point. But she never, never yells, thinks Cassandra in shock. She wouldnât have thought the girl had it in her to yell. Or, for that matter, to slap.
The other maidsâEthel and Margaret and Dinah and Gerda (but not Friedborg, thank the Heavens not Friedborg, she wouldn't be able to look her in either eye)âlook on, stony-faced, ready to step between Cassandra and the youngest of their number if need be. But Faith, carried by terror fast overcome by rage, isnât finished. The words are just pouring out, like boiling water from a geyser.
âDo you know how long I had to put up with feeling like I wasnât enough? Terrified that Iâd be sent back in disgrace because I wanted to be a lady-in-waiting? While you waltzed around the world playing demons and dragons and smashing anything that didnât suit your tastes, I had to sit by Princess Rapunzel every day for a whole year and hear about how perfect you were, how I should try to be more like you. How doing the work I liked doing just wasnât enough, because she didnât need that. She wanted you, Saints know why, wanted someone who would break rules and insult people and hate their job. And I was fifth in line, fifth! Sheâd sent four of us away by the time I came in, for no reason except that we werenât you! Of course she wouldâyou could always take everything from us, and you never cared.â She sneers. âNot when you had a destiny as a guard to fulfill. I was this close to breaking, with Old Lady Crowley and Princess Brat tearing into every little thing I did, even Mr. Fitzherbert stopped trying to keep Her Most Obnoxiously Royal Highness at bay after the first few months. And now you come back here, wearing my skin like a pelt, and you destroy our home and bring a demon down on our heads out of greed and pride, and the Princess greets you like a long-lost lover! And you've got the nerve to come down here again, to our safe place, to find yet another chew toy! Youâve had everything handed to you on a silver platter your entire life, you were the darling of the castleâwhat the HELL did we do to you that you thought you had any right to take it out on us?â
And now Faith is crying, big ugly tears splashing down from furious brown eyes. âHow many more gifts do the Heavens have to throw into your lap before youâll just LEAVE US ALONE?â
âIâFaith, Iâm...Iâm sorry. I came down here to say sorry. To all of you. Iââ
âKeep your pretend apologies, Cassandra,â she spits, and turns away. âJust go do whatever the hell you want. Go chase your destiny. Just like always. Leave it to the rest of us to clean up your mess.â
She laughs, bitterly. "That enough backbone for you?"
173. Boundary
Bigger, Owl points out from the safety of the saddle. Safer.
Youâre less of a threat, Maximus replies quickly. Heâll respond better to you. Plus, you have range tactics.
The Horse rolls her eyes, walks over to Whittingtonâs pile of rags in the stable, and gently nudges the cat with her muzzle. One crusted eye opens.
Moving please? Secret discussion. Calling when weâre done.
The cat blinks at her, stretches, and makes a point of travelling as close to Maximus as possible while walking to the door of the stable, so the Horse backs right up against the wall. Whittington, amazingly, departs without bloodshed.
...he didnât scratch you?
Sounding so disappointed, she teases.
Owl shakes his head. He thinks the world of his big (very big) sister, but taming savage (non-talking) animals is a power too great for mortal Beast. He can only hope she uses it for good.
174. Aware
"It's justâŚhe's like my little brother," says Stan, quietly. "I know you don't like him, but he's my family too. Andâ"
Vanessa laughs. "Stars, Stan, that's not it. Really. I do like Pete. I just..." She looks embarrassed. "Honestly, it sounds really stupid, but from the way you two talk it's like youâreâŚyou knowâŚ"
Pete goes pale. "Oh. Oh. Sunlight above, no way. Nope, I am not getting involved that way with this guy. Seriously. Anyway, three-way marriages are really not my thing."
"Three-way"
Stan looks torn between glaring at his best friend and glancing sheepishly at his girlfriend.
"Wait. You haven't given her the ring yet? But you had this big speech you've been practicing for weeks andâ"
"Pete, dear," says Vanessa, patiently, "would you mind giving us a few minutes?"
It suddenly catches Pete's attention that the front gate is suspiciously unguarded. It needs guarding. He should rectify that.
"He was just getting to it," he protests, as a smaller figure slinks around the corner to his post.
"Yep," says a teenage Cassandra smugly, popping the last consonant. "And yet, he hadn't, and you asking him means you forfeited the game. Pay up."
"You are out to bankrupt me, I'm onto you." But he pulls out a dollar coin all the same.
"You really should stop making losing bets, then. Man, that's going to be a weird story for their kids. 'How Uncle Pete nearly ruined Daddy's proposal'."
"Not my fault you got cursed with scary luck magic somehowâŚ"
175. Campaign
Deploy troops to select locations. Ensure the perimeter is spotless. Take no prisoners. Make sure your warriors' equipment is up to snuff, and that they keep it so. Fight on the front line yourselfâdon't make your subordinates do anything you wouldn't do yourself. Be certain your domain is just as you want it, free from the meddling of invaders, the people inside comfortable but conscious of your ongoing efforts.
In another life, Hortense would have made a fine general.

About Varian's past, did you ever have to deal wuth people giving him shit, (Ex. Feeldspar)*sorry if my wording is bad*
Neither Feldspar nor Nigel were very forgiving of Varian at first, because heâd been to jail and because heâd attacked the princess in the past (everyone loves Rapunzel.) Iâve had strong words with both of them, and they like Varian well enough now, so thatâs been sorted out thankfully.
This. This is one of the many reasons why I love this series:
I actually remembered Nigelâs fear from Be Very Afraid, 1 because ive watched it many times, and 2 because it seemed especially odd to me. It wasnât some silly, fear-ified version of his job like it was for most people. It was really strange and random, but also much more realistic and concrete. But at the time I laughed at it being just random.
Now, not only do I love them for putting it in an earlier episode for foreshadowing, i love how it shows how Tangled isnât afraid to explore its side characters. Nigel isnât a character who is essential to the plot, they didnât have to give him an interesting backstory, even for one episode. But something so simple as a couple lines of backstory can add so much to a character. I feel like I like and understand Nigel so much more after just that little piece of backstory.
Like it even makes more sense of his strong opinions in QfaD. Back then, I knew he was just doing his job, but also, as a Varian fan, thought he was rather unsympathetic towards Varian. Now I understand it wasnât only tied to his job, heâs actually watched a village get destroyed because of one personâs unwillingness to listen to reason: himself. Because he was sympathetic before, and it cost him his village. He isnât going to let Rapunzel endanger a whole kingdom for the sake of one boy, like he did back then.
(Also, sorry if everyone already pointed this out, Iâm just now finally catching up on the recent episodes and I canât yet look through the tag because itâs a spoiler minefield)

âSo itâs official. As of today, youâre my royal engineer.â Rapunzel announced brightly.
Most of the court clapped. Nigel folded his hands in front of him and scowled. âRoyal Engineer. What even is that?â he scoffed. Varian heard him and was about to say something in anger, when Rapunzel stopped him.
âVarian. Nigel. Why donât you two come with me to someplace more private. I think you need to talk.â Rapunzel said.
Nigel and Varian both followed her, although Nigel refused to look at Varian even when they were in the hallway and away from prying eyes.
âBoys, talk it out.â Rapunzel instructed. âVarian, you start.â
âWith pleasure. Nigel, what is your problem with me?!â Varian demanded.
âYou erased the King and Queenâs memory and usurped my position!â Nigel pointed out.
âWell you had Stan and Pete throw me out into a blizzard! I could have died!â Varian shot back.
âIf only...â Nigel muttered.
âWhat was that?â Varian hissed.
âIâm sure Nigel meant to say âif only we had treated him with more kindness that day.ââ Rapunzel hastily interjected.
âI suppose.â Nigel said, without much enthusiasm.
âThis is a good start. You two just need to open up to each other more. Varian, why donât you tell him about the red rocks?â Rapunzel suggested.
Varian was nervous. âWh-whatâs to know? You and I stopped them by working together.â Varian stammered.
âVarian.â Rapunzel said with gentle firmness.
â...Fine. They show you your greatest fears and mine⌠was seeing my dad trapped... and everyone saying it was all my fault.â Varian mumbled.
That surprised Nigel. He had expected the boy to disagree vehemently. But instead, Varian was standing there, shoulders slumped, tears about to fall from his eyes, looking as if the pain from that day was still fresh. Perhaps Nigel had misjudged him. He certainly seemed as remorseful as Rapunzel always claimed he was, but how could Nigel ever fully trust a boy who had nearly taken over the kingdom twice before the age of 16?
âAnd now you, Nigel. Tell Varian what the red rocks showed you.â Rapunzel prompted.
âYour Highness, I donât see what that has to do with anything.â Nigel tried to wriggle out of it.
âNigel.â Rapunzel said, a bit more forcefully than she had urged Varian.
Nigel hesitated. Could he really admit to this, this troublemaker, the only thing that scared him more than dragons? âMine was the kingdom in danger, and I could do nothing because⌠Iâm useless.â Nigel murmured.
âBut youâre not useless. You know that, right?â Varian told him.
âThen why has Rapunzel never consulted me the way her parents did?â Nigel demanded.
âMaybe because, sheâs not her parents? Everyone has different leadership styles and Rapunzelâs  style is caring, caring about everyone in Corona. Just because she doesnât come asking for your opinion all the time doesnât me she wonât listen if you approach her. You just have to be honest with Rapunzel and, and trust that sheâll help you. She always does.â Varian insisted.
Rapunzel smiled. âAww, Varian!â she gave him a big hug.
Nigel thought it over. âI guess thatâs⌠true. I never really thought of it that way. Rapunzel is⌠a different sort of ruler. Not a bad different, of course your Highness. I would never dream of criticizing you!â Nigel demurred.
âWhy not? If Iâve done something you donât like, you have every right to tell me about it.â Rapunzel replied.
âWell, in that case, I donât agree with your giving that⌠âNigel paused as if searching for the right word. â...impudent teenager such an important position.â he finished.
âYour objection is noted, but my decision stands. Varian is my Royal Engineer.â Rapunzel declared. âAnd while you donât agree with my decision now, I think given time, you will see the merits of it. Varianâs a good boy⌠you just have to trust him.â
Trust was a hard thing for Nigel to give, and Rapunzel was right that he wasnât ready to do so. But perhaps one day he would be.
The End
Nigel is hard to write! I donât think weâre supposed to dislike him but his actions in the series seemed rather petty and harmful, if Iâm being honest. After Queen For A Day and Rapunzelâs Return, I think things would be tense between Nigel and Varian, as both have wronged each other, so I tried to reflect that in this post epilogue encounter.
These are some of my TTs characters I've made through the years, a very small portion of them.
Pictures are either giftarts, my own arts or made with Picrew.
First we have Emelie Vogel and her servant Poppy Trail. Emelie is the niece of the Kings advisor Nigel, her servant Poppy looks so much like her that sometimes she has to dress up and take her place to do the boring stuff that miss Vogel despises.
Next up is a pair of recent OCs I made, they're gay and they have a semi-tragic backstory, Saffron (orange hair)and Hawkeye. Hawkeye is an old aquantence of Hector, around tennyears older than him though.
And OBOY here's a messed up family. Tzipporah, a seer and healer, canonly, she is from a people called Calderi that sadlybwas not liked by a Zkingdom called Aurelia (they are scum). Hundreds of years ago, Caldera was taken down by Aurelia and many of it's people fled. Fast forward to semi-current timeline and Tzipporah met a man that she fell in love with, however he was an Aurelian and didn't show his true nature until it almost was too late. She trapped his soul into her journal that she always kept.
They had a son, Salazar. Sadly Tzipporah at one point had to go on a journey and left him at his 'aunts', he was very young at that point. When she didn't come back the aunts decided to leave him at an orphanage and it just got worse from there. Salazar discovered that he had mystical healing powers which the caretakers exploated of course, it took a bad turn on him and even worse, he was eventually persued by a demon in his dreams, causing him to drain the lifeforce of his best friend. Fleeing in panic he ended up in Corona, where he lived in an old mill in the woods, far from people, studying magic in his own. A couple of years later he went on a mission to find the Four Elemental Stones, that would free the demon that was attached to him (that being his father but he doesn't know that). And so he eventually met Hector and Oleander (@xenomorphics OC)
After a little quarrel, they ended up being his new parents. (This is my second main RP that I always go-to)
The past few days of Oc-tober I have forgotten to post.
Day 1: Morning. Elizabeth needs her coffee
Day 2: Dystopia. Poor Liz, Iâd be terrified too
Day 3: Punk. Nigel would be so disappointedÂ
Day 4: Ghost. Papa is crying and Liz doesnât understand why
