tailypo... tailypo... all i want is my tailypo
my piece for @vinegarzines paranormalcy zine. when i was a kid in ohio my mom used to be a part of a storytelling guild. the story of the appalachian cryptid, tailypo, was my favorite one to hear.
Tailypo is a frightening creature from Appalachian folklore. It is said to be around the size of a dog, with bright red or yellow eyes, black fur and a long tail. It has claws, which it can use to attack people, and is also able to speak.
The most famous version of the Tailypo story sees a hunter sever the creature's tail. He takes it back to his cabin, cooks it at eats it. That night, he awakens to find Tailypo glaring at him from the foot of his bed, and demanding the return of its tail. He manages to fight it off, and it is chased away by the hunter's dogs. Each night, however, it returns, climbing further up the bed, until eventually it reaches his head and kills him.
