If you've followed me for awhile you know I'm a bit of an engineer. So I loved seeing the concept design drawings for the Harry Potter movies at the Harry Potter Tour outside of London. To me, it is its own artwork. Beautifully detailed. What kinds of things or places do you like to go when vacationing? For all the naturally beautiful places we loved, we also enjoyed the museums and places like this as well. In this section of the tour you get to see lots of props and "how they did it" things. One of the casualties of technology has been the mail. It seems that all we get in the mail any more are bills (if you haven't switched to e-bills), junk mail, and generally more junk mail. I think we've lost something in not being able to look forward to getting a letter from a friend or loved one in the mail. Occasionally (I'll admit pretty rarely) I like to fix that and will send a letter to my daughters or others. Like everyone else we usually text / chat, or even occasionally talk on the phone. But every now and then, sending a letter - taking the time to write it out and send it, I think makes it a little something special. -So I give you the idea, if you want to make someone feel special: send them a letter for no reason than to just say hi and that you were thinking of them. Half way through the week! I hope your week is going well and the best is yet to come. I liked the landscaping at a recent job site I was at so on my breaks I went out and snapped some pics. Some times I think maybe the simple and obvious can be the most intriguing. Of course, since I live in a different climate / region I don't see this type scenery every day. When you travel, what do you like to do? Do you visit just the main iconic places? Do you find hidden spots of interest? Do you sit and talk with locals? Do you try as much of the local cuisine as you can? Do you take a tour? Do you visit museums? I would say I do a mix of those - usually on our own finding a mix of iconic places and quieter spots. And today I share a pic from a museum. The other day I shared a pic of airplanes and so I thought this pic kind of goes along with it. This is the one and only original, first ever to have a successful powered flight: the Wright Brothers Flyer in the Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian in Washington DC, USA. I'm sure it's from my love of air and space, but this is the one museum of the Smithsonian that I have visited. The planes, the rockets, the history all fascinate me. Of course, unless you live near DC and spend all your free time there, you can only see so much when visiting the Smithsonian. So pick your favorite and enjoy! Not too long after the Wright's first flight (just a decade or so) my grand-uncles were also inspired by the the thrills of flying. So much so that as teenagers, they got together similar materials to the Wright Flyer and made their own glider. They used a car to tow it and all their friends joined in the fun. Unique enough to have a local newspaper come out and write a story on it. They both went on to become career pilots throughout the hay-day of aviation. A closer look at a wild cucumber spiral vine. Some of you may remember that I shared a similar pic about a year ago and I figured it was time to share this one. The other pic was one frame off from this as I carefully moved in on this spiral that is actually protruding out toward the camera. I had to move slowly and keep clicking to hope at least one of the frames would be in focus. When you're doing macro with an extremely narrow depth of field, the slightest movements make a huge difference. So I've found burst shorts like that are one of the better ways to do it. I heard recently of another that I may have to try where the photographer would be laying on the ground and then use her toes to nudge forward or back just that little bit to get the focus. Yep, we photographers sometimes get into the strangest positions to try and get "that shot". . If you want to follow just my nature pics, check out @DSK.Views.Nature . I just figured that as the hottest days of summer are now fading and the leaves are starting to change color here in the Pacific NW, that sharing a summer memory that most remember fondly was appropriate. I hope the rest of your summer is as fun as this memory was for me (or your upcoming spring and summer if you're in the southern hemisphere). As I prepare to share my pics, some times I do a little more research on what it is I'm showing. Such is the case today since I realized I am sharing a very common summer food here in the USA, but I wasn't sure that my followers from around the world would know what it is. And sometimes, I realize that I don't really know that much about something that is so common that I've never really thought about it. Probably most of you know, but just in case - these are hot dogs being cooked over a campfire. This is a classic American summer tradition. Originally from Germany and hence sometimes referred to as a Frankfurter or Wiener (Vienna sausage), they became a common food in New York and now throughout the US. I think the popularity spread mostly with the growth of baseball throughout the 20th century. After cooking these over the campfire (or in any number of other ways when at home) we'll put them in a half-slit bun and usually add ketchup, mustard, maybe mayonnaise, relish, onions or any number of other condiments. Kids seem to love them! But as with all foods, some people of all ages love them and some can go without. For me, at least half the pleasure of the tradition is cooking them. Getting them "just right" (which everyone's opinion of that is different). And most importantly without having it fall into the fire. So how do you like your dogs? . Jul 2020 .
