Upper Table Rock

A delicious little hike with a 2 mile trek each way, and various views from atop the summit! Though still cold this time of year, this is the home of the “dwarf woolly meadowfoam” flower, aka “Limnanthes floccosa ssp. pumila”—it grows NOWHERE else! Pretty cool to know there’s quite a bit unique about this place, other than how flat they are!

A VERY identifiable location in the Rogue Valley, you’d be a pure fool to not at least stop by the base to read up some fun facts and nature-knowledge at the signage! It’s an amazing area that holds a secret world at the top… it feels like I’ve stepped through a certain wardrobe, if you will 😉

Table Rocks Rock Fall The Table Rocks Wilderness Area in Oregon, USA, created in part by a 7 million year old lava flow. The huge lava flow is a solid, hard-to-erode rock that capped the whole area. In some places, rivers have been able to erode through the lava to the softer rocks below. Where this has happened, the rocks underneath erode, undercutting the lava flow and causing it to collapse as blocks. #mypubliclandsroadtrip heads to Upper and Lower Table Rocks -- two of the most prominent topographic features in the Rogue River Valley.

These flat-topped buttes rise approximately 800 feet above the north bank of the Rogue River in southwestern Oregon. Upper and Lower refer to their positions relative to each other along the Rogue River. About 7 million years ago, a shield volcano erupted a lava flow that was approximately 44 miles long and spread out over the entire valley, from the Prospect area to Sams Valley. This mass of lava caused the valley floor to rise in elevation to the height of the top of Table Rocks.

Cooperatively managed by the BLM and @natureconservancy, the Table Rocks area includes a spectacular spring wildflower display of over 75 species, including the dwarf wooly meadowfoam, which grows nowhere else on Earth but on the top of the Table Rocks. Vernal pool fairy shrimp, federally listed as threatened, inhabit the seasonally formed vernal pools found on the tops of both rocks.
