Anti discrimination policies in jobs do an okay job of keeping this in check to a certain degree, but believe it or not; diabetics can and have been discriminated against in the workforce! Depending on the situation, it can be a major problem or a minor inconvenience but it’s still discrimination. While you shouldn’t lose your job over being a diabetic, the attitude of your coworkers and what they think about you can affect you in a bigger way than you’d actually expect. Thankfully I’ve had the blessing of having some of the most chill, compassionate, and understanding coworkers you could imagine, but not everyone is gonna be like my awesome coworkers (if y’all ever find this blog, I love y’all). Case in point, my first ever job. I had to be on my toes constantly, tending to customers, watching out for my orders to be complete, and to monitor my blood sugar if I felt off (I didn’t have a Dexcom at that time.). I didn’t get a 30 minute break, only however long it took me to eat. That was it, and my next break after that was when I got off work. I learned that I would actually have to underdose on insulin sometimes, because I could zoom if I was having a blood sugar high (obviously it would never get over 200, just like 130-150). I am actually glad that they laid me off, because I’m pretty sure I was doing some damage to myself. I was able to get out of being teased and ridiculed for my condition for the most part, but my friends have teased me about it before (that doesn’t count. Just friends being friends haha). How about y’all? Do you have any diabetic discrimination stories? If so, let me know in the comments below! As always I appreciate y’all checking out my blog!
