One writing pattern Iāve noticed when it comes to shipping in comics is that writers often use the former love interest (especially the more popular ones) to validate or prop up the new relationship or status quo.
āIt feels like in order to convince readers that the new couple is strong and healthy, writers had to bring up the ex in front of them and make them cheer for them.
āFor example, DC constantly uses Kory to prop up and validate Dickbabs. It feels impossible to even have a DickKory conversation in the modern comics without Barbara being inserted into their conversation somehow just to remind readers for the millionth time that Kory is the ex and Barbara is now the current gf. Not to mention how Dickās other love interests, especially the women of color, were also humiliated and slut-shamed to uplift Barbara. They literally called Helena ugly compared to Barbara.
āWith Tim, he started distancing himself from Steph and growing closer to Bernard. Steph was understandably upset because Tim barely payed her attention but then when they finally talked, their reunion wasn't even about just the two of them, they had to include his now boyfriend Bernard in their moment and suddenly Steph's excited to meet Bernard someone she had never even spoken to before and said seeing Bernard was āthe best day of her life.ā It didnāt feel natural at all.
āDuring the time DC made Superman and Wonder Woman a couple in the New 52, Lois had to appear and convince Diana that she and Clark were not a thing. There was even a scene where Lois and Steve were on the phone calling them while Clark and Diana were busy making out, like they had to remind readers that their old relationships were over.
āThe same thing happened with Peter and Felicia when writers were teasing them. They made Peter tell Felicia that MJ was āmore like a sisterā to him. Then thereās another comic where Peter is paired with another love interest and he goes on a double date with MJ and Paul who was MJ's husband at the time. They had to make MJ be openly affectionate to Paul right in front of Peter's face and vice versa.

āIām not saying the ex has to be bitter jealous or hostile toward the new love interest. They can absolutely just be cordial and quiet about it. The reaction would actually feel more natural if they moved on quietly instead of suddenly becoming the biggest cheerleaders for the new relationship out of nowhere. Especially when the ex and the new love interest arenāt even that close and now suddenly they're super friends after the new love interest was pushed š
If the new romance can really stand on it's own, they wouldn't feel the need to use the old lover. It just comes across as insecure and like clout-chasing off the more popular love interest to get their fanbase to pay attention to the new relationship.
āI also shared a panel of Jason and Artemis. In that case, Artemis wasnāt being used as a prop for another one of Jasonās love interests, but just like the other panels it was also created to slap their shippers in the face. They had Artemis say that Jason doesnāt need her and Jason didn't even deny it, they had him agree with her. It reminded me of that time they made Dick tell Kory that he doesnāt love her anymore.
(We can say Bat-editorial is the new gf of Jason and Artemis is the ex they hated)
āLike, why do writers always have to insert shady dialogue towards the ex just to break a couple up? You can separate two characters without making them act like assholes toward their ex.
