I think the saddest part about the shi clan mess is Shisui and Suirei can't meet again. Hope they got to all kind of bugs catching as kids
I don't think Suirei would've enjoyed the bug catching, IIRC, but I'm sure she loved seeing her little sister being so happy doing it and bugging her about bug facts. There's soooo many sad things about the Shi clan disaster I can't even count (Shenmei you will always be reviled), but I agree the lack of a sisterly reunion is up there. I do think there's a chance that if the hairpin ever comes back and Suirei finds out, then she's totally gonna say "Fuck it, I have nothing to lose, there's nothing left for me in Li, I'm looking for her." Given Ah-Duo's willingness to help Maomao escape if she asked, she'd understand and try to help her. BUT I find it unlikely Maomao will tell Suirei about the hairpin's return (if it ever happens) given that A. she doesn't want to reopen old wounds, and B. she'd anticipate that Suirei would do the exact thing I predicted.
In the end, though, we'll always have this beautiful reunion fanart by @lesly-oh !!! An essential salve for those whose hearts are bruised by the Shi clan story. Following normal etiquette, I won't repost her art outright, but please please please go visit/revisit that link, it's one of the best Shisui/Tamamo fanarts!
BONUS (LN Spoilers Ahead): What's also sad about this whole thing is that Shisui is currently unable to show the Shi clan kids or (extending to Maomao's other friends) Yao, En'en, and Chue the joy of recreationally catching bugs like she did with Maomao and Xiaolan!! Bringing back my old Shisui & Chue friendship propaganda, the sparrow-esque Chue sure would've loved hopping around in the forest hunting for bugs to snatch! Look, in my ideal world, they're all hanging out together and she's spreading bug propaganda and eating locusts and helping out with the locust plague as a frontline bug researcher and solving mysteries with Maomao (clocking suspects in the process). What could have BEEN!!!
I think the group of rascals that live at the Kan house can meet with the well behaved children at Ah Duo villa (not possible i know) cause playdates are good for shenanigans
Great shout! I thought about the Ah-Duo villa kids while I was making the hot pot hypothetical and found it sad they couldn't realistically join. Having the La clan kids (Sifan, Wufan, Liufan, Zhizi, young Junjie), the Ma clan kids (Maamei & Bakin's children), AND the Ah-Duo villa kids having a big playdate would be sooo adorable and healthy for the villa kids, but alas…
It's a bummer that the Ma clan kids and Ah-Duo villa kids' personalities aren't strongly defined in the canon yet, such that I can't really make any comments on chemistry and what exactly they might do. If Chue's biological son is anything like Chue, the three musketeers of the La clan (Sifan/Wufan/Liufan) + Zhizi will mesh well with him. In the LN15 Ch. 9 illustration, Ah-Duo was playing with one of the kids while holding a ball, so the kids could maybe do some kind of sports activity. Ah-Duo and Sanfan could direct/referee any physical games. Maamei and Bakin would enjoy baking sweets for everyone (see Maamei wanting to bring cookies to the kids in LN8 + the way she excitedly told the kids "Now, who wants a snack?" in LN13 after kicking Baryou in the shin). I'm honestly not sure what Suirei would do, but I think she'll enjoy watching the kids with a wistful, moody, longing stare. Maybe Chue's son (again, if he's anything like Chue) could notice her and drag Suirei into something reluctantly (mirroring Chue dragging Maomao into stuff) then she finds herself surprisingly having fun.
But of course, the whole messy fugitive thing, ugh. To some extent, I think we can trust the kids and their overseers not to spill the beans. The kids won't care because they're kids, and Sanfan, Maamei, and Bakin don't strike me as the type of people who would snitch on little kids (especially when snitching = death). But you never know what rumors might eventually emerge the more people know about them. Ah, I really wanna think about it more but I know I'll get sad 'cuz I know it can never happen.
