A small, spreading, evergreen tree Arbutus unedo (strawberry tree, Dalmatian strawberry, Killarney strawberry tree) thrives in a sunny, sheltered location. The urn-shaped, white flowers often appear as the strawberry-like fruits, from the previous years flowers, ripen. The multiple trunks have flaking red-brown bark.

The summer rain was causing the wonderful smooth cinnamon-brown bark of Arbutus menziesii (madrona, strawberry tree) to shine. This medium-sized tree has been crown lifted by removing the lower branches covered in evergreen foliage so allowing the bark to be admired and an understorey of herbaceous plants to develop. This tree was at the beautiful Inner Temple Gardens, London, which opens to the public in the afternoons.

On a London, UK, street an Arbutus (strawberry tree) was producing clusters of small white urn-shaped flowers. This large, rounded evergreen shrub or small tree has an attractive peeling cinnamon-brown trunk and branches. This species maybe Arbutus × andrachnoides - a hybrid of Arbutus andrachne (Grecian strawberry tree) x Arbutus unedo (Killarney strawberry tree, cane apple, Dalmatian strawberry). This hybrid is less likely to produce the small, orange-red strawberry-like fruits which are often on Arbutus at the same time as the flowers.
