Eugenides is a perfect case of a character thats even more enjoyable to read from other people’s perspectives than his own. With really great characters, it is often the case that there is a certain thrill to view them as other around them do; I know for me Percy Jackson is one, so is Kaladin from the Stormlight Archive.
I can read a whole book from Percy’s or Kaladin’s perspective and be content, but its that little window that permits an outside-in look from another pov that cements our awe for these characters. Similarly with Eugenides, his character narrative is incomplete until you look at him from the perspective of people around him, especially in King of Attolia where a large majority of the people surrounding him undermine him and do not have the background on him that we as readers do and that what makes this book soooo good😩🤌🏼 It the complete unmasking of him as a character: what we’ve only had in snippets (marred by the love of those around him, his own self doubt etc. etc.) before is transmuted into an actual paean decreeing him as a total badass. Its so satisfying to witness and just thoroughly enjoying to read.
