was thinking about it and realized that if I took a bunch of people who are about halfway through the The Thief and asked them, out of Ambiades and Sophos, which one dies during the climax and is only ever mentioned like twice in the remaining five books and which one leads the winning faction of a civil war/war of succession to become king of Sounis and ends up personally shooting a foreign ambassador, a lot of them would probably not guess correctly lol
finally drawing again, so here’s this weird piece
I managed a few treats for the Queen's Thief @hamiathesgiftexchange , which I can share now that reveals have happened. All are Tribute for the Mole God, who urges us all to make Bad Art rather than No Art.
What if Gen enjoyed wearing the pitneen suit?
Sophos & Helen were accustomed to holding their firstborn even when on the throne of Sounis, listening to petitions. But this is the last time, as the toddler wants to play the 'sculpt Dada's face' game. Sounia is having a very difficult time controlling her face. (So, apparently, am I. I may redraw this at some point.)
Helen & Irene have gotten comfortable enough with one another for Helen to explain the meanings behind her tattoos.
The scene where Sophos gets the gun. Like. Two young people who despise violence. Whose hearts and minds burn unisono that they would, in an instant, choose any other way if they could. And yet, this scene makes the Thief-Turned-King-Turned-God Eugenides just human again, because here he shows his personal helplessness, quietly whispering to his protegé: Dear friend, I too didn't see any other way. Use the gun.

“Sophos and I will make out in the backseat the entire way,” she threatened.
Sophos, beside her looking wan, pivoted his entire focus like a hunting dog scenting a fresh trail.
“You promised you wouldn’t tell me anything,” Gen hissed ferociously. “We had a deal.”
“I’m not telling, I’m warning,” Helen said, and then aside to Sophos, “I’m sorry to use you like this, but he hasn’t slept.”
Sophos accepted this disappointment with distracted equanimity, puzzling something out while he squinted at Gen.
Gen threw the keys at her, annoyed when she caught them.
Since I can’t help myself-
