An exploritory essay on why Solas is not “BAD”
In this essay we will explore why Solas is not a genocidal ass:
First off the terms “GOOD.” And “BAD.” Are social constructs created by what our government mass media and social conventions teach us.
First off Cole would HATE him if his goal was to straight up KILL everyone.
So he either literally has no other options as he says, tearing the veil won’t nessesarilly kill everyone,or either him or the inquisitor find an alternative option that can still redeem his people.
Third He is slightly based on the tenth doctor
The doctor doesn’t kill his people for fun. He makes a sacrifice after weighing the options. He sacrifices his people because it kills the LEAST amount of people on the long run. This is the same sort of Deal for Solas he’s not just doing this for shits and giggles.
It’s because he’s done the math ,and each alternative route ends worse he’s planned it ,slept on it ,thought on it ,and it’s the kindest way. He’s guilt ridden by it ,and it haunts him particularly if he fails the people he swore to protect. Not that he doesn’t care about modern Thedas he just made the promise to his people first which is more binding. First gets dibs.
HE could have killed the inquisitor at any point.... If he wanted taken the anchor and ran after Corypheaus he waits two years even with a low approval inquisitor he lets them live even when he could’ve killed them and probably (it took everything he had not to just kill an enemy inquisitior because he disposes of generals and pawn he doesn’t trust.)
But he doesn’t. And with a friendly inquisitor he wishes them well tells them to live well and means it.He takes no pleasure in having to sacrifice his friends he doesn’t do it to be malicious or cruel it’s out of duty.
Solas has a tendancy to omit truths
Taking down the Veil also may not be as bad as he makes it out to be. (He has a tendency not to trust others with his full plan.) more than likely he’s being calculated either the Veil is unstable and he’s too PROUD to admit that he made a mistake in creating the barrier between worlds (rifts don’t form where something isn’t already weakend and a rift is a hole in reality in this case so...) Or perhaps he is telling people the worst case senario in case the best case doesn’t work out.
Solas knows waaaayy more than we do right now
There might be facts we don’t know about The ancient elves, the chantry, and old gods that IS KEY
To the story We know red lyrium is Titan blood and we know Solas is hopping up on it (which is how the titans became arch demons.) Arch demons are also known to have better access to the fade or that’s how the rumor goes anyway.
However why Sacrifice himself if he didn’t fully believe in what he was doing if he was just well I’m going to go kill everyone now bye why go through the effort of sacrificing himself in the process unless there’s more to it. Such as both party’s live if he does type deal. (And he would absolutely do it.)
Or perhaps he was once fully an old one and had to reject the tainted part of himself to create the fade hence the red lyrium
I don’t know I just know there’s reason behind it.
He has the approval of both a WISDOM SPIRIT AND COLE a COMPASSION SPIRIT
So whatever this plan is maybe it’s bad but it’s calculated and empathetic.
Yes he’s Fenharel however it is not entirely unlikely that perhaps the dread wolf is the part of himself he becomes when tainted (Like Dr.Jeckyll mr.Hyde.)if he could walk amoungst the old ones perhaps at one point he was one and the wolf was his archdemon.
The wolf could also be symbolic rather than literal
A wolf is a symbol of leader ship in folklore as well as an omen. Considering the ragnarok type imagery The wolf could represent Fenrir the Wolf who comes at ragnarok breaking free from its chains the gods had let him walk free as a way to control him
It would also not suprize me if other gods are involved (manipulating in someway.) likely they purposefully made sure he survived and endured Arlathans fall as a punishment for his nature. Why would they do that? Simple they have nothing to loose except they are hoping that he will destroy the world by being let free Ex.) Fenrir.
So either this ends ragnarok style
Solas isn’t actually the dreadwolf (alone anyway.)
He needs a vessel the current one he is in is zathrian from origins but what if his vessel is supposed to be Fenris? Fenrir In Norse mythology is also called Fenris so if the lyrium markings are the vallaslin of the ancient elves done to him by an old slaver. The red lyrium would be much more effective in that body. (Like a damn glowstick.) anyway more Red lyrium he can store the more old god power. The easier it is to take the Veil down. He would’ve needed the markings of the ancient elves who don’t exist anymore. The best evidence for this is Fenris being another name for Fenrir the Norse wolf and Lavellans romanced trespasser dialogue (which may not seem important.) however if Solas is a solitudinal trickster god who has made enemies of the other gods and is well versed in magic as well as A+ retorts. It’s a classic callback to the (Prose Edda) the book in which all these myths come from funny enough originally written as poetry anyway... Lavellan says when he discusses tearing down the Veil their love will EDURE why is this important Sigyn Loki’s wife in the mythology is the Godess of endurance who is punished by separation from her lover and watching his suffering a torture although in that version Loki is strung upside down and hanging. As Sigyn loyalty sits by his side collecting his blood. (Weird flex but ok) point being this very much sets up a Norse mythology theme
Bonus Flemthal = Frigga Loki’s mother the godess of forsight and wisdom.... also known for an affinity for Magic and magical practice as well as a nurturing spirit mentoring Loki.
