To the old Norse, it was easy to see Loki’s children as the ultimate monsters: the world-serpent, the corpse-queen of the underworld, and Fenrir, the great wolf fated to devour the Allfather.

But when Ragnarök finally came, it wasn’t chaos alone that brought the world crashing down. The gods themselves helped build it. And they built it out of fear.

The gods actually raised Fenrir in Asgard. But as he grew to a monstrous size, the prophecies began to weigh heavily on them. They knew the wolf was fated to destroy them. But instead of facing that truth openly, they chose deceit—and Týr alone paid the price of making that deceit believable.

They tricked him. They played to his pride, pretending to test his strength with heavy iron chains, which he easily shattered. Finally, they brought out Gleipnir—a silken ribbon forged by dwarves out of impossible things: the roots of a mountain, the breath of a fish, the sound of a cat's footstep. Fenrir was suspicious, so to sell the lie, Týr, the bravest of them, placed his right hand in the wolf's mouth as a pledge of good faith.

When the ribbon held and Fenrir realized he had been betrayed, he bit down, taking Týr's hand. The gods shoved a sword into the wolf's mouth to prop his jaws open, fastened him to stone, and left him bound until the end of the world.

The gods thought they were locking away fate. But what they really did was teach fate to hate the chain. Fenrir was already dangerous. The prophecy was already there. But fear turned danger into vengeance. And when Ragnarök came, the wolf did not break free as a wild animal. He broke free as a prisoner.

It is a brilliant, brutal piece of ancient psychology. You cannot cage something dangerous and expect it to stay quiet forever. The longer you repress a fear, a trauma, or a threat, the more it festers. The gods didn’t survive their fear—they fed it. What they actually did was help give it teeth.

Just unbridled wildness and chaos.
