I find the mentor/mentee relationships in Dragon Age Inquisition so much more interesting in light of what we learned about Solas and Mythal in DAVG. I've always felt that the Justinia/Leliana bond was meant to parallel Solas and Mythal's relationship, as well as foreshadowing Mythal releasing Solas from her service. Leliana talks about her relationship with Justinia in a similar way to how Solas treats Mythal. You can ask her if they were 'more than friends' too, and she finds the question quite odd. She explains that they were more than friends, although not romantically together, and what they were defied simple explanation as it was rooted in their deep spirituality, similar to Solas and Mythal's relationship.
Leliana: "I used to believe I was chosen, just as others say you are. I thought I was fulfilling his purpose for me. Working with the Divine, helping people. But now she's dead. It was all for nothing. Serving the Maker meant nothing." Inquisitor: (Friendly option) "Maybe you have another purpose. I could help you find it." (Inky being a Herald again.) Leliana: "No, this is my burden. I regret that I even let you see me like this."
I find this sequence so interesting in hindsight, because it's what the Inquisitor ends up effectively doing for Solas later on. Justinia is dead, but she leaves a message for Leliana, releasing her and apologising for the way she twisted her to get her to do her bidding. Sound familiar?
It's why the comments from the VG companions in the Regrets of the Dread Wolf questline cemented just how badly the writing had deteriorated after Gaider and others left. They can't just let players see the memories and draw their own conclusions; they have to pre-empt all the stupid jokes they know players will make about their relationship and reduce all that complexity to 'they were doin' it hurr durr'
Even Dorian has a similar conversation about Alexius and Felix. You can ask Dorian too if he and Felix were lovers, which he denies, but explains that he admired him greatly. Alexius nurtured Dorian, they shared similar beliefs about everything that was wrong with Tevinter, and he spent long hours researching time magic in his study. It was when Alexius went through the double tragedy of losing his wife and his son becoming tainted by the Blight that he changed. He was no longer the friend Dorian knew. He was twisted enough to join the Venatori.
Idk, I think I'm just at the point with this fuckass game that I'm just not even treating anything in it as canon anymore. As it is, if (and it's a huge if) another Dragon Age game gets made, a lot of it is going to have to be retconned anyway to get it to a point where a satisfying conclusion is reached. I can honestly see them just deciding to pan the whole game, only keeping some of the lore tidbits and outcomes but explaining them much better than VG did and leaving fewer plot holes.
