Gingerly resting his bag on the windowsill, Mav says, “I need a shower. Pray for me it’s seen bleach sometime this decade.” Digs around for a minute before making a triumphant noise, shower shoes in hand.

“You’re spoiled living with the Bradshaws so long. No one’s as clean as Carole,” Slider says, flicking the TV on. It’s got damn rabbit ears, so the picture’s all fuzzed out. He fiddles with it for a minute or two before giving up and settling for the half-in, half-out rerun of MASH.

He rubs his eyes, then drags his palm against his cheekbone, but never removes the shades.

“…That’s Mister Weirdo to you,” Maverick mutters. “I hope your baby bro has a better taste than whatever this is, that’s for sure.”

Having spat that out, Maverick tunes out the radio with one blunt motion. His arm falls onto his chest as he sighs to himself. Nothing to give, or the world just don’t got any to spare for him.

“Alright, here’s the thing.” Slider points a finger at him while keeping the lane. “What were you doing when you were, I dunno, seven?”

Maverick stretches his arm to the back of the seat, still slouching. His eyes wander around the clouds floating above, from one peak to another.

“Was running around in the woods as every healthy boy should.” He replies.

“Yeah,” Slider utters a laugh. “Danny was taking sneak peeks of my vinyls under the bed. So there’s that, Mister Weirdo.”

He then licks his lips and swallows the remnant of an easy, yet somewhat faded smile. His throat bobs as the light draws up a smooth line on his skin, pronouncing the contrast between the soft hair and the fine bones.

“Was he taking a sneak listen or was he after some boobs and asses?” Maverick quips, as if to dart his mind off of the silhouette beneath his shirt. “What was it?”

“Candy-O.” Slider says. “Nicer than it’d ever get for a baby boy.”

Slider lets out a breath through his nose. The tip of his upper lip gets sucked in, then nibbled on, before he releases it.

“Hell, I didn’t even get angry at him.” A small chuckle escapes from his mouth. “I mean…how could I, really.”

“ ‘Cause he was so young?” Maverick replies. “He must’ve been…wee tiny, back then.”

Maverick runs his hand across the dashboard, barely following the shadows that cast a momentary relief. The corner of Slider’s mouth twitches. Whether it tries to tell anything, he cannot really tell.

“Not anymore.”

Maverick leans into the speaker and shuts up for a few seconds. His fingers wait around the volume, only to dart away with a big sigh when the synthesizers kick in.

“This isn’t it.” He mutters under his breath.

He pushes up his aviators to his head. Another change in the frequency, this time the digits adding up. A white noise, followed by some news anchors talking about the state of the nation’s economy. The fiscal climate isn’t looking good, as the current study suggests, or so they say. Maverick frowns, and turns the station back to the old one.

It’s still playing the same song.

“Why’s everything so fucking low today?” He groans. “For crying out loud, man, it’s summer.”

Slider returns a vague nod without looking away from the road. Maverick sighs from his nose and runs his hand through his hair, over and over.

A song about melancholy. A song about getting crashed under the double-decker and being happy.

The sky is blue outside of the windows. It runs above them, spreading itself freely, like it doesn’t care.

“Didn’t you have other things to do?” Slider begins.

Maverick looks towards him. Their eyes meet, almost, before Slider darts his gaze away from him.

Sunlight runs across Slider’s profile, clinging onto his nose before leaving, pouring out in dots on his loosely pursed lips.

“Back home,” Slider opens his mouth with clearer momentum. “I mean…”

His thumb touches his bottom lip, as if to wipe off the excess.

Maverick turns down the radio volume, then places his hand on the dashboard.

“Is this your way of telling me to cut this out?” He twiddles his fingers on the warming surface. “ ‘Cause it’s never gonna work.”

“Right, hotshot, you do you.” Slider returns a chuckle.

Maverick scoffs and throws his hands on the seat.

His idle gaze caresses the line of Slider’s profile, down to his neck, pooling around his chest.

He feels his temple burn, and so does his cheek.

“I don’t mind this. None of these, y’know?”

Maverick sits up a little in his seat.

“Not even a little?” He asks.

“Mm-hm.”

This place looks nothing like a home, but it is one. It’s going to be one. It’s their home. Both of them, together.

And it’s closer to Carole and Bradley too, easily biking distance, so they’ll be able to help out more, spend more time with them. Mav can already see it, the two of them sitting right there on the couch, staying over at his and Slider’s place for a change.

They’ll probably turn the guest bedroom into Bradley’s room. They’ve already talked about it, about asking the kid for decorating opinions, and if everything goes well, they might be able to surprise him with it for Christmas.

An arm wraps around him and he easily follows its gentle pressure to lean into the strong chest behind him with a small pleased sigh. Slider leans down, his lips brushing under Mav’s ear. “Don’t tell me you’re tired already.”

Mav tilts his head just enough to see him, to see his smile. “Nah. Just… thinking.”

“Thinking about how great this place is gonna look with a new couch?” Slider guesses lightly, and Mav’s eyes unwillingly jump back to the thing in question. It’s really not the most pleasant sight - the couch is old and ratty, it just looks uncomfortable. Most importantly though, it’s not nearly big enough to fit both of them, and that’s just unacceptable.

“Among other things,” Mav confirms, twisting around in Slider’s arms to see him instead of the atrocity. It also lets him see all the boxes stacked up by the door, and he groans. “How much more stuff do we have?”

“Just one more box of your stuff,” Slider tells him. “You didn’t mark it, but it seemed fragile, so I left it to you.”

“Oh, don’t tell me you’re tired.”

A familiar smirk spreads Slider’s lips before Mav’s even finished speaking, and he doesn’t hesitate to tilt his chin up for a kiss, gasping a little when Slider bites his lip. “Don’t worry, I’ve got plenty of energy left.”

Vacation is over (😩) so here’s an angsty snippet from my SliMav universe 😈

The noise from the door grew louder once he descended the stairs, and he could hear Ron more clearly as he strode across the front hall. “Tom? Sarah? Anyone? Please!! Are you in there??”

He didn’t want to think about the reason Ron was banging on his door in the middle of the night, or why he hadn’t already let himself in with the key he’d had since they moved in. There weren’t many things that could get his old RIO that flustered, and two of them were currently deployed on separate carriers on opposite sides of the world.

It started with watching. Watching him, then watching each other watch him. And then, slowly, just watching each other.

Then came the teasing, where no one else could hear. Especially not him.

“Close your mouth, Mitchell, you’re drooling.”

“Take a picture, Kerner, it’ll last longer.”

But teasing quickly became commiserating.

“Did you see him lecturing that Lieutenant today?”

“God, yeah, he’s so fucking hot when he’s fired up.”

And commiserating turned into… this.

“Are you thinking about him? Imagining it’s him touching you?“

“Fuck, Sli- don’t tease me.”
