We as a Community Should Rethink Using the Witch's Sigil Wheel
[Disclaimer: this is me as a Gentile person pointing out something in relation to what I’ve learned about the appropriation of Judaism, Jewish people, please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong about anything]
Trigger warning: Antisemitism
So in the witch community you’ve probably seen this:
It’s the Witch’s Sigil Wheel, a common method of creating sigils in our community. Just connect the corresponding letters, but have you actually questioned where it comes from? the signs point to it being an adaptation of the Hebrew wheel that’s on the rose cross. Pictured here:
The wheel itself is also sometimes a smaller part of a larger symbol, like the Kabbalistic Rose Cross of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, pictured here:
Now you might be wondering why we have to rethink this, I just tied it back to older forms of occultism right? It just seems like another thing, but like many things in witchcraft it is tied to a history of stealing other practice. Like much of other Esoterica it specifically appropriates the Jewish practice of Kabbalah.
In much of Judaism’s history it has been persecuted and its practices stolen. Kabbalah is no different, it, like many other aspects of Judaism, have also evolved in spite of persecution by Christianity. Kabbalah’s spread into more occult circles was sourced from people who wanted to use it for their own gain. Whether for it to come into to use as information that could be used to convert people to Christianity or to use it in personal practice. Often times the people would go through lengths to learn Kabbalah, much of it forced from the mouths of Jewish people. These people though would then go and spout antisemitic propaganda, wonder why Kabbalah sounds so familiar to another word? That’s because Kabbalah is what the word Cabal comes from, yes, the demonic cabals.
Kabbalah itself also won’t work outside of the context of Judaism, I have heard that there are also requirements to be able to even study Kabbalah so you’d see why it won’t work. Also, the plastering of a cross onto a religion that exists in spite of Christianity is not something that should be done.
So now you know why, I hope you can see why we should think about removing it from our practices. I hope you make the right choice.
