sometimes i can't exactly identify a plant, i can still learn about it though
sometimes i come across a plant that is one of two species and the species are so similar i can't tell them apart. today that's the case with this malva known as kaaskruid in dutch named for it's seed that's shaped like a cheese wheel. this is either musk-mallow or greater musk-mallow. i find the two are so hard to tell apart that honestly after attempting to figure it out for 30 minutes i gave up. i'm honestly assuming it's musk-mallow because that one is more common. but i can't say with certainty so how do i treat this? i typically learn about both plants and see what they have in common. often it is a lot. when i talk to it i will talk to it with the name they have in common and be non specific. that's just a personal preference. and i try and remind myself that i am practicing animism and bad botany, i am not an actual botanist and knowing the exact species although nice isn't necessary to great the plant and treat it with respect. i really wonder how other animists feel about this? would you keep going untill you figured out the exact species or is it more important to you to have a good idea of the type of species in your area? are there genus of plants that you have a hard time telling apart and are just happy to know the genus of?
I think botany, bad or otherwise, is fabulous!
I don't think animism requires knowing the (scientific) name, but does encourage learning enough to understand relational ecological connections between you & local life. Names can definitely be a part of that!
I would also agree that it's better to say you don't know than to exhaust yourself trying to get it right every time. I love your conscientious compromise. You can still be friends with someone without knowing their middle name : )
i love that last sentence so much that's so well put thank you for that!!! also good luck on learning how to prune! i'm still learning how to interact with my local nature in a way that benefits it ! pruning is such a good example of that !
I've been doing botany and folk medicine and bioregional animism for a very long time, and tbh I think not striving for some perfectly scientific grasp on my surroundings was actually the biggest step I made for my own practice and helped me a lot in feeling like there were reasonable goals to pursue. for me knowing the scientific names of plants can be very useful to research them, especially if I have plans of ingesting them, but I think I used 'science' as a crutch for a significant portion of my life and it stopped me from making other kinds of meaningful connections with plants.
I am a syncretist and I do value science and I'm glad to have it as a tool for my practice, but forcing myself to put that aside and try relying mostly or purely on indigenous knowledge/animistic speculation not only taught me a lot about decolonizing my perception of plants, but also about how I can have valuable relationships with them that are not consumptive, transactional, or through a colonial lens.
names are less important than relationships, for me. just like there are a lot of people in my little fishing town whose names I don't know, but whose places and roles in relation to me I cherish deeply, and I think the same can be achieved with dedicated animistic inquiry. that frame of mind helped me realize that those relationships should be established, recognized and acknowledged before I demand such privileges and impositions as names and services

Sometimes you really do just have to deconstruct what parts of your magical practice reflects you vs being something cool you saw someone else do
land spirits do not have to be dramatic.
sometimes reverence for land starts very simply:
learning the names of local plants. noticing where water gathers. thanking a tree before taking from it. picking up trash. leaving a place better than you found it. sitting quietly long enough to feel the mood of the land.
animism is not always spectacle.
sometimes it is relationship, attention, and care.

Devotional Posting for Takyjei // No. 1
Hi hi
This post is going to be an introduction post about my conpan god, Takyjei, f.k.a. Tirijeiscoci. By the way, yes I am @/awolfwandering42 on Amino.
(Disclaimers: There is no historical records of a deity ever going by this name so therefore take everything I say with a grain of salt. These thoughts may not even be divinely inspired though I would like them to be. Also you can contact Takyjei at any time, I am not the end all be all authority on him, he is. You are also free to offer to him at any time, just keep in mind he just likes offerings and is very opposed to being worshipped, though if he indicates with you that he wants worship I am not going to stop you.)
So Takyjei actually usually takes on two distinct forms for me, one being the crowned hunter and the other being the nurturing bear. In crowned hunter form he is a humanoid figure with a crown of golden antlers. His main color in this form is green. This form has slightly tanned pale skin with long wavy black hair, a green cloak, lots of leather accessories, a white or cream button up shirt, brown pants, and armored shoes. He is always absolutely adorned in jewels in this form, calling back to original title I had for him which is the ‘hunter god’. His other form, the nurturing bear, is a brown colored bear arms that are like growing young trees.
For he exists as a god of cycles he presides over life and death. He also exists as a god who is very kind and nurturing but can and will destroy if needed. He’s a god of necessity, kind but also fair. A god of forests, both the living and the dead. He is one of eight gods born from the shards of a jealous god, though he does not maintain contact with the other seven. Of those he is a god of the created/physical earth, for all the other ones are gods that pertain to the other elements, half of the physical as Takyjei is, the other half of the void.
He was recommended to me by my Agathos Daimon/guardian spirit, Alexios/Alexei. It has been a thing since the beginning of my practice that I wanted to contact unknown gods. Takyjei was the perfect candidate for such a thing so that’s how my relationship with him started. He made it clear from the beginning of our relationship that he does not enjoy being worshipped, by me at least. Though he enjoys the company and the gifts. There is also this little language thing he made that goes along with a whole magic system but I have not taken the time to learn most of it yet but I’ll update the blog as it happens. He’s very peaceful and my familiars like him so that’s a good sign. Next post will hopefully be about his myths !!
Until next time,
Dylan

We meet again fellow wanderer,
A lot has changed since the last we talked about my gods. I've honestly really slacked off in a lot of the different parts of my life, but I'm trying to get back into the swing of things so lets see how things go.
Takyjei takes the animal form of a tiger now which is fun as well as the fact that a lot of his mythology has changed around a bit but that might be for later.
Since the last post I have really been able to pinpoint what form Takyjei takes in my mind as well as his divine designations. He's mostly a god of liminality and continuation as opposed to just a forest/hunter deity. He really is more active in my life though and still remains a constant though I don't usually intentionally make time for him. But also I've been seeing how different spirits interact with him.
Anyways might make more posts about him later tonight !!
Until next time,
Van
