It’s very kind of people I speak other languages with to assume that my slow comprehension and endless requests for repetition are as a result of us not speaking my first language, when in reality, my auditory processing is just complete shit.

I got a little perturbed the other day when I realised I don't have an English translation for "unne" (Norwegian), which is when someone has a little treat and they've deserved it, or when someone's getting what they've earned and everyone agrees that yes, the universe owes them that. I tried explaining the sentence structure in a kind of "I envy you your [xxx]" but it's something more agreeable than envy. "I think you're owed being cozy in bed" I guess? I asked my grandparents since he's a professor of English literature, and she translates books from Norwegian to English, but the only other translations they could come up with were "you've earned that" or "you certainly deserve that". I'm just kind of annoyed that I can't find anything that quite expresses the same sentiment
I have such domestic fanfic ideas and nice warm uwu stories but... ENGLISH DOES NOT HAVE THIS FORMAL/INFORMAL DISTINCTION LIKE MY FIRST LANGUAGE! AND!!!! THIS IS EATING ME UP!!? There are words in my language to call someone or refer to them with respect and elegance but English lacks it all 🥲
it’s “listen to the new stromae album” oclock
neutral pronouns in Portuguese (br)
if you're learning Portuguese and want to use neutral pronouns, well — officially we don't have them but— irl we're starting to use elu/elus.
ela > she
ele > he
elu > they (singular)
elas > they (feminine)
eles > they (masculine)
elus > they (neutral)
the best way to "neutralize" a sentence, since everything "has a gender" in Portuguese is to use synonyms and choose words that don't have gender variation, if it's not possible, grammatically we use masculine to "neutralize" or you can use neo language again
bonito > bonite (handsome/beautiful)
aluno > alune (student)
engraçado > engraçade (funny)
if you're insecure about when to use "u" or "e", well, basically
if the words in the masculine form ends with "o" you change to "e", and if it ends with "e" you changes to "u"
amado > amade
ele > elu
hope it's helpful
p.s.: this is for people, we still "gender" things (like table (feminine), floor (masculine)

my two moods
1. Chinese characters are the most beautiful written language ever created... a pinnacle of human expression... imbuing each syllable with so much meaning and history... each one a work of art
2. hey what the FUCK. what the FUCK. why is this 他妈的 character only one stroke different from that 他奶奶的 character yet they sound and mean something completely different. I’m going to physically fight Chinese characters. I’m not sure how, but I’m going to do it. come at me. COME AT ME
((thank you for everybody who is enduring my rejoin phase right now... I am still extremely rusty and I get that while writing. So I am very sorry for my awkward wording and my slow replies... and every missing comma too *sweatdrop*
I hope you can forgive me... I haven’t written this much content in english for some while anymore... ^^’))
I'm getting really happy when someone understand me in this language, English. Because it's not my native, i always feel very uncomfortable with my words, my sentences, my grammar and i feel like someone gonna make fun of me. I'm pretty sure not everyone understand me perfectly and i'm doing a lot of mistakes but no one ever made a bad comment about that and i just wanted to thank. Thank you.
