He strutted on top of the garden wall pleased with his punctuality. Would the day begin if not for him? A squat brown house lay nestled underneath the boughs of a colossal guava tree, an aging old crone, sagging limbs swung heavy with fruit and leaves. The breeze plucked a ripe pear and dropped it near a tiny piglet, the thud waking it from its dreams. The runt nudged closer, embedding herself into the single sleeping body of her brothers and sisters, all squeezed tightly around their mother, a great sow, dug deep into a cool trench of earth. As the cold mist fled from the warm rays, Loretta slowly opened her eyes. In her youth they shone a bright golden brown, now a thick fog clung to them, made them ash grey like the rest of her. She sank deeper into her thick blanket struggling to remember her dream. • First paragraph of a story I wrote. Context: I had a big submission yesterday and as usual I waited till the very last moment and had to write 3/4 the story on the spot, 3 hours before my deadline. Luckily I knew how the story would end, I was just lazy to put it into words. Not one of my best moments. I'm sure there is at least one huge blunder lurking somewhere between the words because there always is no matter how many times you read a piece and I read it just once before clicking send.(Doh!)
