In this past week's Vulture, Jenny Saville was interviewed as she provided a walk-through of her show Ancestors at Gagosian West 21st Street, New York. The discussion focuses not only on the possible interpretations of the works but on the real-life circumstances that may have inspired them: http://fal.cn/yRtV Saville paints actual people; possibly out of convenience, she’ll deploy her son and daughter as models, or at least parts of them, versions of them: that’s his leg there, her body at rest. While motherhood has become part of what her art is about over the last decade, it’s a decision that, to her mind, 'was kind of risky,' she tells me. 'It is all right to be a female painter but to also be a mother and a female painter is something you don’t really want to advertise.
