ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The best of this nation after its Prophet are Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, and if I had wanted I would have told you of the third.” حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، نا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا يَقُولُ: خَيْرُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ، وَلَوْ شِئْتُ لَحَدَّثْتُكُمْ بِالثَّالِثِ. Nāfi’ said: “Ibn ‘Umar used to follow the traces of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ in every place he prayed. This was to the point that there was a tree that the Prophet ﷺ would sit under, and Ibn ‘Umar would frequent this tree and water its trunk so that it would not weaken.” عَبْدُ اللهِ بنُ عُمَرَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ: أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ كَانَ يَتَّبعُ آثَارَ رَسُوْلِ اللهِ -صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - كلَّ مَكَانٍ صَلَّى فِيْهِ، حَتَّى إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ -صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - نَزلَ تَحْتَ شَجرَةٍ، فَكَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ يَتعَاهدُ تِلْكَ الشَّجَرَةَ، فَيَصبُّ فِي أَصلِهَا المَاءَ لِكَيْلاَ تَيْبَسَ. Ibn Shawḏab narrates from al-Layth b. Abī Salim who said: “I encountered the early Shīʿah in al-Kūfah. “And they unrestrictedly refer (to the companions) as he who saw the Prophet ﷺ then he is a Ṣaḥābī (companion). This is understood to be the one who reached the age of tamyīz (differentiation), then the one who did not reach the age of differentiation, then the attribution of sighting (the Messenger ﷺ) is not affirmed.
