#Sabalan (Persian: سبلان Sabalân; also called Sāvālān) is an inactive stratovolcano in Meshkinshahr Ardabil province of north-western Iran about 20 miles west of Arbadil. Sabalan is the third highest mountain in Iran and a permanent crater lake has formed at the summit. Sabalan has a ski resort(Alvares) and different tourist areas such as the Sarein spa. UP TO THE HOLY WATER. Mount Sabalan is the third summit for me within a month. Compared to the other two (both over 5000 meters) this one was quite "easy". I felt a bit altitude sick in the beginning of the climb ( I tend to do just around 3000 meters). But it got better and better the higher we got and the last bit to the summit I felt nothing but great.
With me on the mountain I had Mahsa and Ali, Rodrigo, a friend of Mahsa and his son and two soldiers of duty from Azerbaijan. We were a quite odd team, odd but good. Cause even when some of us felt really sick, even when one puked just 50 meters from the summit and one behaved like strongly drunk (when-you-just-wanna-sit-on-a-rock-with-your-face-in-your-hands-and-never-move-again kind of drunk) we kept the spirit high. I sang quietly the last bit to the summit to make our legs feel lighter and Mahsa never let her smile leave her face.
I was the first of us to see it. Its shifting colors between white, turquoise and deep blue. Nothing breaking its perfect reflection of the clear blue sky. Water should not be that still at that altitude, how can it be? Wind should be cold and wrinkle the surface. But there were no wind and there were no cold. Just a silent holy lake at the summit of Mount Sabalan.
