Cloudsteel Kirin and Arbaaz Mir: A Failed Rule 0 Conversation, Teaching Magic to Someone Who isn’t Interested in The Game.
Cloudsteel Kirin, a card from the lineage of Platinum Angel with the roaring 2020’s power creep. In itself a very innocuous card that can be removed with almost every piece of removal known in Magic. However, that’s not how this goes.
Saturday was in itself, A DAY, after, A WEEK. Ever since starting to play commander more frequently, again, this week has been the least I’ve played. Personal and professional responsibilities come before the game, I guess. However, today was my first real break I got to play Magic without thinking about any of the responsibilities.
It was elation, the thought of going to the LGS to grab a game. The thought of playing my Arbaaz Mir deck had me really pumped, after all, it has been getting praised by some people at the LGS because games end in a shorter time, not fewer turns. However, it also gets praised because I have get to showcase old cards/strategies like Norin, the Wary + Genesis Chamber , draft bulk cards like Reinforced Ronin to Modern staple Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer as self bouncing effect with all the Imapact Tremors-like effect there are in the deck. Sadly, there was no elation.
On Saturday the climate was really moody with lots of rains, almost thunderstorms, while other parts of the island are bone dry. There was a public Salsa concert on the town plaza, near the LGS, there was the opening of a comedy show in the theater, near the LGS, the was a big bazaar with a lot of micro entrepreneurs, near the LGS, to finished it off, it was not but dry but wetter than wet on the town my LGS is located. 40 minutes trying to find parking, the town was really buzzin’ and poppin’ even with the weather.
After all that, there wasn’t open tables available for commander. However a dude from one of the many local commander group chats saw me hanging and we decided to make a 1v1 game with our multiplayer built decks (me on Arbaaz Mir and him on Liesa, Shroud of Dusk). After we’ve been smacking our faces with the only commander decks we had, a guy appeared and invited use to grab a game with him and his girlfriend.
Here comes my list of grievances.
1- I know I am to blame for this one as every other member of the group that was formed. However, he invited us to a commander game where he and his girlfriend had upgraded pre-cons.
2- He started to call us (Leisa player and me) toxic players for not informing him that these were our decks.
3-His girlfriend was all game scrolling on her phone. She clearly didn’t care at all.
4-His girlfriend clearly didn’t know how to play magic and he was scolding her for playing wrong to the point he started playing cards for her.
5- He kept trying to justify all the card purchases he had made to upgrade his deck in front of his girlfriend and bad mouthed anyone who buy cards to upgrade their decks. He kept throwing shade to anyone that built their own commander decks and not play with precons.
However from all of that aside, what bothered me the most is that he called Cloudsteel Kirin a toxic Magic card because it didn’t let me lose and he had to have removal to, well, remove it.
Anyways just needed to vent.
