Announcing United Wizards of the Coast
As of today, Monday, April 27th, the collective workers and laborers behind Magic: The Gathering Arena are forming a union in affiliation with the Communications Workers of America (CWA). We have achieved a public supermajority of employees committed to our cause and are offering the opportunity for Wizards of the Coast (WOTC) and Hasbro to demonstrate their stated values by voluntarily recognizing our union.
MTG Arena is a vital part of how the world engages with Magic: The Gathering. We believe that unionizing will increase staff-wellbeing and retention, promote transparency, and ensure equity, and create the healthy environment needed to continue making exceptional products. We know the workers that make the game can and should be treated better, and our aim is to show that to the world through our union efforts. We are building the game industry we want to see in the world.
Why are we Organizing?
We’re seeking better treatment for our union members. Recent decisions by WOTC and Hasbro leadership have not aligned with the values of their employees.
The workers at Magic The Gathering: Arena have voted overwhelmingly to form the union: United Wizards of the Coast - CWA (UWOTC)! We are
You can support the members of UWOTC by demanding management take the high road and voluntarily recognize the union by May 1st, 2026–International Workers’ Day! Sign on to our letter!
"In our letter to management this past Monday, we called on Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro to take the high road and voluntarily recognize our union by Friday, May 1st. That deadline has now come and gone, with no direct response from the company. Management claims to be committed to ensuring every person is heard, valued, and supported. However, when we spoke up about our desire to unionize, they responded only to the press.
We still maintain that the success of our union is inevitable. The company has witnessed the tremendous outpouring of support and positive attention that our campaign has received from the public and the press. They have received our voluntary recognition letter with the names of a super-majority of the Arena team. We are confident that we are going to win recognition of this union; it's only a question of time. We look forward now towards the NLRB election, which we expect to be held within the coming weeks.
We want to thank all of our supporters for the incredible show of solidarity we've received from the wider Magic community. More than 30,000 people have already signed our public petition calling on Wizards of the Coast to recognize our union. We've heard so many messages of support from players, influencers, content creators, and more. Please keep up the pressure and continue urging WOTC and Hasbro to do the right thing; they can still choose to voluntarily recognize our union any time before the impending election.
If you haven't already, head to cwa.org/uwotcletter and add your name. With the workers and the fans standing united, there’s nothing we can’t accomplish!
While we're disappointed in this delay, together we remain strong in our convictions. We look forward to sitting down at the bargaining table so we can make Arena better for workers, for Wizards, and for our players."
"*UPDATE*
Since the announcement of our union, Wizards of the Coast has hired Fisher Phillips (a union avoidance firm), and chosen to engage in a daily union-avoidance campaign with emails sent to the Arena team intent on spreading misinformation and sowing fear among employees.
Instead of voluntarily recognizing our union they've forced us into a redundant and drawn out election process, rather than listen to the overwhelming majority of employees who signed our initial letter to management. WOTC can still voluntarily recognize our union at any point up to the NLRB election. We encourage you to sign our letter of support, and make your voice heard."
This book considers many interpretations of folkloric and folkloresque goblins from the Middle Ages to the present.
"This book examines the history of goblins from the Middle Ages to the present. It shows that goblins—whether interpreted as creatures, objects, ideas, or people—were historically contingent and grounded in an often-hazy interplay between folkloric and folkloresque traditions. As products of their historical environments, goblins have been imagined and reimagined throughout history. Their various incarnations include demons working on behalf of Satan, residents of Fairyland making mischief for humans, and cave-dwelling villains in Tolkien’s or Dungeons & Dragons’ fantasy universes.
Some authors, often early modern and modern Anglophone elites, used goblins as crude, destructive mimicries of what they deemed abnormal. They chose to label certain humans as goblins to indicate those people fell outside of normative ideas about proper appearances and behavior. In the twenty-first century, however, goblins have seen a sympathetic reappraisal; now, they are often portrayed in ways that see these longstanding stereotypes as assets in an age of unreasonable societal expectations."

Hey, at least the Pinkertons aren't involved yet.
"The union isn't a third party, WE ARE THE UNION. This doesn't scare me. I am voting YES for #uwotc-cwa!," writes Vaine. Other prospective union members have chimed in to voice their ambivalence to the letter's implied promises: "I am voting Yes, and it’s laughable they thought this was going to convince me otherwise," adds another.
What's interesting to me is the idea that Wizards of the Coast might still be feeling the ramifications of laying off 1,000 people back in 2023. Not only in the fact that it seemingly soured their relationships with Larian, but also in that it spurred this entire union in the first place.
In an interview with Polygon earlier this month, Vaine told the site that "the thing that really kicked off the union conversations were the 2023 layoffs, where Hasbro laid off about a thousand people. Everybody I talked to couldn’t understand why Arena was hit by those layoffs. By every metric, we were succeeding."
I'm not an expert in business management, but if I were a bigwig at Hasbro right now, I'd be wondering if the best way to avoid unions is indeed to lay off over 1,000 people—some of whom were responsible for your latest successes. But at least nobody's had the Pinkertons called on them yet (the bar's on the floor).
I've been playing Magic: The Gathering since 1994, making it part of my personality in the way that only the 'tism can sustain, but if Wizards staff go on strike, I will not cross that picket line.

DOUG WAS MAC TONIGHT??
Y’all also need to know that Doug Jones was in Smash Mouth’s music video for “All Star” as Pencil Head:
@cellarspider It’s your Blorbo from apparently everything?
Indeed, he is in an unexpectedly large amount of everything! You never know where he’ll turn up, being spindly and mesmerizing.
Finally got to 7 wins in a Secrets of Strixhaven draft in Arena. Drafted two Witherblooms, some good removal, 4 noxious newts, and enough pest and X spells to make it all the way.
