been looking for it on the blog, but we all know how tumblr search works (or rather doesn't work). but i was wondering what made you pick Rooktail as the next big POV? just his relation to Goosefeather/Bluestar family or something else? he seems a little like a random character to pick to me for a big role and changes (turning him into Sisters-born cat who joins ThunderClan during interesting times), so im just curious about your thought process on picking him and not anyone else! (unsure who else though.. prequels cast sure can be lacking)
Well as everyone knows I love my prequel nobodies! :P if you couldn't tell from PkS in general.
But yes the headcanon was a big part of it! Originally it started as just an explanation for how Goosefeather got his powers. but kinda like how I did with PkS (where originally, Petalkit surviving was just a plot device so Mapleshade and Crookedstar could be related), i found myself thinking "Okay, but what's the story there?" and the rest is history.
Rooktail also comes it at kind of the perfect time to pick up where PkS leaves off. There's about a 2 year timeskip between the end of PkS and the beginning of RtH! so Petalshade and Perchshine will be senior warriors, Pineheart is a young warrior, and we get to see Cloudberry as a full medicine cat before she gets all old and cranky. (and of course... the aftermath of other things, which I cannot say yet because of SPOILERS!)
(Pinestar would also make a good protagonist for this case, but... I like trying to choose characters as PoV's who don't get that spotlight in canon. Still... Pinestar is my pookie... so I can't rule out any Pinestar-related side stories just yet, OK?)
Rooktail as I've envisioned him is also a very different character from Petalshade and I think he'll be a challenge for me to write. With Petalshade, I was able to write from the heart a lot. The way she acts and thinks is pretty similar to how i think I would act in her situation, because I crafted her character as a parallel to struggles I've been through, and how I think I've grown as a person. going for a more comfortable writing angle in this way made sense for my first long-form written story, I think. But Rooktail is not like me at all. He's passive, even-tempered, and wants to fit in. I want to write about what it's like for him to try and conform to a culture with norms very different from the ones he grew up with, and how he doesn't exactly end up fully happy with where he is. It'll be an interesting challenge and I'm excited for it ^^
