Kind of piggybacking off your thoughts on stonefur/blackstar, whatβs your take on leopard/stone? Or is it more of a friend betrayal in your mind? I kind of go back and forth.
I feel like I vibe with Leopardstar's and Stonefur's relationship best as platonic OR as one-sided Leopard/Stone from Stonefur's side. I obviously find the TigerClan time full of fascinating character dynamics, and Leopardstar's betrayal of Stonefur is very juicy even at baseline. But I do think adding on a romantic aspect gives an additional angle for angst.
As for one-sided Leopard/Stone, I like the idea of Stonefur being completely and utterly devoted to Leopardstar, but he's aware that Leopardstar isn't interested. So he just channels his devotion into being her best friend and most loyal supporter and deputy, but he's never able to truly move on from her (at least not enough for him to ever fall in love with anyone else.) Then TigerClan happens, and Stonefur is imprisoned along with Mistyfoot and their apprentices. I could see Stonefur being the most optimistic of them about this not lasting long, that this was all Tigerstar's/ShadowClan's doing, if Stonefur could just speak to Leopardstar then they would be out immediately...
Then we get to the Bonehill scene where Stonefur finally gets to see and speak to Leopardstar face-to-face. He reminds her that she is his leader, and he takes orders from only her. Only for Leopardstar to defer to Tigerstar, upholding his decree that Stonefur must kill the apprentices to prove his loyalty. That's the nail in the coffin for Stonefur's devotion. He just cannot stomach what Leopardstar is asking of him and for what is probably the first time in his life, he defies her. And we all know how that ends.
he looked back one last time. there was no final message to be read in such a brief look, only the knowledge that we saw one another, then blackfoot was on him again.
