Played the first act of Source of Madness. This is a INCREDIBLE game, its AI-assisted visual style is very atmospheric and creates a sense of cyclopean horror. Many games get tagged "Lovecraftian", but don't convey the feel of the book, and this game gave me that feeling for the first time (in game format) in the first hour of play.. Shapeless and hybrid creatures are fascinating. Gameplay isn't perfect, but the game has quite a large variety of weapons, in the form of visuals in most. Protagonist is a mage after all... I tried to choose screenshots without spoilers, but the game is really extremely weird, and in a good or bad way - it's up to you to decide. The game feels unfinished, clumsy, but I can feel the soul and love of the developer in it. You should at least give it a chance!

I think I need to start my own pixel art brand of game tourism—which is visiting games for their art and atmosphere rather than their gameplay. I’m not much into action platformers (still chugging along to finish Owlboy), but when a game looks as beautiful as Dead Cells, I do pay attention.
Dead Cells is a roguevania (rouge-lite + Castelvania) that’s in Early Access on Steam and GOG. Procedural generation is always a cool topic, so here’re a few examples of the diversity their system can generate.
The game has overwhelmingly positive reviews from players (and like, thousands and thousands of reviews) with new updates released frequently. The latest one, Brutal Update, came out this month and its trailer is as good an example as any of how the game looks in practice.
The character animation is skeletal with a 3D base that renders to normal maps as well.
The game engine then renders this with a cell-shaded shader.
Pretty cool if you ask me.
