❝...Say Zach, do you remember the first bar we ever went into? Fun times, wouldn’t you say Zach? That's right. It wasn’t like any of the old movies we saw back then. Such as 1994’s indie cult film, Pulp fiction, written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. Boy did that Uma Therman sure know how to dance… Did you know the set location was actually a closed down bowling alley? Still, It was quite the culture shock for us to truly experience the real deal. Though you could never handle your alcohol, could you Zach? For being in a small town such as Greenvale, The Galaxy of Terror has a surprisingly lively nightlife atmosphere. Great place, though they don't serve coffee. I think it could even rival that of bars in other bigger Washington cities, don’t you think Zach?❞

My piece for Bonus Footage @deadlypremonitionzine for Deadly Premonition's 15th year anniversary! This game has that small town campy charm while simultaneously being one of the most haunting horror concepts that it made a very strong impression on me the first time I came across it about eight years ago.
Mostly this piece was inspired by the thought of these two sisters getting the happy ending that was denied for them, in an alternative universe kind of way. With Carol still performing her heart out on stage, and Thomas able to join in by accompanying her on the piano.

Y'know--
I don't think The Missing: JJ Macfield and the Island of Memories gets enough credit for how much it goes out of its way to depict how valid trans identities are regardless of presentation
During the game proper you are playing as a dream idealized version of JJ who took some of her traits from Emily (note their eyes are the same color) and has a feminine voice provided by a cis woman VA
And in the NG+ you can play as JJ as she is in reality with her developmental voice (voiced by a cis male VA albeit softly spoken) and with her short hair. You can chose to switch out JJ's wig, outfits and which version of her voice you use and some of the photos on JJ's phone will display how she is in reality
And the thing is for 100%ing the game your reward is to see post-game Emily and JJ go clothes shopping and find the outfit she wears in the dream
But like-- the game makes sure the player understands that voice, clothing and wig do not change JJ
She's the same woman in any depiction and that is such an empathetic way of telegraphing to the audience that trans women are women and they do not owe the world or themselves passing in any form to be recognized as such
For a Japanese video game that's pretty dang amazing and there's a big reason that despite some flaws (the handling of topics of suicide and conversion therapy are not great) it is one of our favorite bits of trans media
Helped get us to finally come out
there is something about stories set in weird fictional American towns that just click with me:
Gravity Falls
Twin Peaks
Deadly Premonition
Welcome to Night Vale
all of these have just the right doses of mystery and comedy. twin peaks is definitely a big inspiration for all the others, and it is the coolest one in my opinion, though i love them all.
please recommend me similar stuff if you know any!
. . .
Not long ago I was testing games on my Linux PC and decided to play a session of Toejam & Earl: Back in the Groove. I have enjoyed this game since the Sega Genesis era, especially playing it among friends (it’s a really awesome Multiplayer Roguelike, and everyone should try it).
Anyway, while playing the game I decided to boot the Credits to listen to the game’s music, because really that is a highlight of this game.
But you’ll never believe what secret I ran across!
Lo and Behold, I spotted Hidetaka “Swery” Suehiro’s name in the game’s credits. I do believe he voices the Sushi Stand guy!
Swery, in case you didn’t know had a history with SNK, being a key developer for The Last Blade and the Last Blade 2 fighting games, he also developed the horror platform indie game The Missing with ARC System Works as his publisher.
It was thanks to Swery that we debunked a certain myth!
But seriously, who knew he helped make Toejam & Earl!?
