The problem really isn't the argument. It's the fact we've gone almost 8 months of constant arguments with little to no warmth or loving moments between them to balance it out. In 2017 we got so many lovely moments like the picnic, them swapping clothes, or the moment where they're cuddling aftr the ons reveal or the fire extinguisher scene. All of that between all the angst that kept us wanting to root for them, and that was when they had so much worse stuff going on. Now they're dealing with not as hard hitting angst but they seem so much further apart. And it's not the shows intension. If it was, surely by now they'd acknowledge the obvious rift between them but they haven't.
They haven't acknowledged a rift because there isn't one. And we have had loving and warm scenes between them in 8 months.
Here are a few that come to mind straight away over the last 8 months.
•NYE kiss.
•Proposal 3.0
•Aaron worried about Robert's whereabouts after the found out the truth about John
•Both Emmerdale Farm stone scenes
•Aaron begging Robert for one more night
•Them in bed together
•Aaron constantly worried about Robert's wellbeing.
•Laughing and joking at Sam and Ross
•Defending each other to Cain and Serena
•Always bringing each other up in conversations
We are getting warmth and loving scenes between them, but their dynamic has changed, and I think for some that it is difficult to get their head around. Aaron is not open and emotional anymore. He is closed off and prone to anger. Robert is the one who is more emotional and vulnerable. But they still spend the majority of their time together. They still enjoy their time together and have fun when the plot allows. They still show that Robron are a loving couple, possibly even more so because they constantly bring each other up when the other one isn't in the episode. We had a lot more loving and emotional scenes last year before and after Reunion 3.0., more so than newer couples like Lewis and Vinny, or Belle and Kammy, have had this year. These two couples got together without much work from Emmerdale.
Soaps have changed a lot in 6 years. Emmerdale has changed a lot as well. And we need to remember that Robron's 2014-2019 run was all about their romance so we had a lot more romantic scenes, a lot more fluff before the angst. As I said in a previous post, these fluffy romantic scenes only happen when a relationship is in trouble or just starting out, which is why we got a lot last year. But showing them happy for happy's sake isn't what the show does now.
Other couples like Mack and Charity, and Coira have had fluffy stuff before they had the bad, dramatic scenes when their relationships were in danger. Robron's relationship isn't in danger at the moment, so we haven't had any fluff. But we did last year before John and Kev came back. Instead, the show are moving Robron onto something else, but they are still showing them as a unit. Aaron wanted to spend a romantic evening in with Robert today instead of going out with Mack. As soon as Robert texted him, he came home. He also has a picture of the two of them on his lock screen. Robert is telling Aaron everything that he finds out about Serena. They are communicating with each other unlike the other couples that are struggling right now.
But as I said before, Robron are still important to the show. They got engaged in the history-in-the-making Corriedale. They are the heart of the show because they have been given THE farm on the farm soap. They are being touted as Mr and Mr Emmerdale, which is the greatest accolade to have and sets up their future as stable and one I am looking forward to.
