Rachel had made up her mind exceedingly early-on in her stay in this place, that she was not going to be disclosing her parentage to either Jean or Scott -if he happen to arrive as well. Scott wouldn’t necessarily be an issue but Jean...she got her own headstrong personality from someone. It had been far too many times in the past that she had had to deal with the sting of rejection from the redhead and there was no guarantee the same wouldn’t happen here.

Besides, she was far too young and already burdened with the actions of the phoenix in her own world. There was no need to add to any of that. So instead, she kept their interactions casual when they happened to coincide at the Institute, like today. “Hey, glad to see you’re doing alright after everything that happened at the ball.”

2nd person. Female reader. Slightly angsty but hurt/comfort - Happy ending! 

Zoro often needed a second to understand what was going on. Usually it was because he had been asleep, too drowsy, or a little tipsy whenever something was being explained. But Zoro was by no means stupid. Once he understood, he was there with his mind 100%. 

So why had he been breaking his head over what had happened a few days ago non-stop? No matter what options he considered, he could not wrap his head around why you had rejected his advances. 

Zoro, dense as he was, had taken his sweet, sweet time to realize his own feelings for you, and even more time to realize those feelings might get reciprocated. The way you would subconsciously send him longing looks, only to turn your head away before eye contact could be established, the way how you never liked anyone touching you, but you seemed to make an exception for him. The way you never trained in anyone’s presence, but Zoro made you feel at ease. The way you would thank Sanji for extra food with a smile, and then just give it to him… the list was endless and it took three crewmates taking him aside for a ‘conversation’ for him to properly realize what was going on. It had taken him a while to get used to the idea, he was fully devoted to Luffy and his goal, but the more he thought about it, the more he realized that he wanted your presence near. No, he needed it.  So once all those steps had gone through, he confessed. Pretty matter-of-a-factly. He wasn’t one for elaborate planning and grand romantic gestures. Just you and him alone, a moment of silence and privacy where no one from the crew would bother you.  It had taken him a couple of minutes, having to restart his sentences multiple times to get the message across properly, his ears bright red by the time he had finally conveyed all his emotions properly.  You had been staring at the floor for most of his talking, and he could not read your expression at all.  “I’m sorry Zoro”  He blinked. An apology was the last thing he expected in return after his confession. “I can’t return your feelings”  And with those words you had pushed past him, leaving him dumbfounded and a little angry. Not angry at you, absolutely not, but at the few people pushing him to confess his feelings, making him believe that they would be returned. He felt bad for putting you in such a bad position, and hoped he hadn’t made you too uncomfortable. 

But the following days you had avoided him, even though he had assured you that no matter the outcome, he didn’t want to treat you any differently. The crew had avoided him a little as well, and he was not sure if it was pity / anger / embarrassment. Whatever it was, he was growing increasingly frustrated and was eventually driven to the one person he would never ever ask for advice, but the only one that seemed to be available at 3 am, the moment in the middle of the night when he decided he could no longer sit on this mystery. 

Sanji was in the kitchen, preparing food for the next morning already, and for once didn’t yell at Zoro when he came in. 

He explained, calmly, how you had come in earlier to ask for advice as well when you got your dinner. How you were feeling down, how you felt like you weren’t pretty enough for him, how you felt like you would only hold him back and be a bother, how you felt… all-round not good enough for him.

Zoro was absolutely shocked to hear Sanji say that, nearly punched the cook in the face for insinuating you were any of those things. He realized just in time that it was not Sanji expressing those feelings, but you against yourself. 

Sanji added on that previous relationships had made you afraid to even participate in any sort of relationship, and finished off his speech -and vegetables- by adding that if Zoro would choose to go after you anway, he better not fuck it up or he’d kick him off the ship. 

Zoro didn’t even waste time arguing with the blond cook, practically sprinting out of the kitchen and barging into your room. In hindsight not the best idea, but once his brain thought of something, his body moved without giving him time to overthink his decisions. 

You sat up sleepily, confused as to why you felt the cool night air on your skin and why there was a sudden weight on your bed. Your eyes grew wide as you saw Zoro sit there, and your first instinct was to hide or run away, neither of them possible as you were as good as trapped under your blanket with the way he was sitting.

“y/n, stupid curly brows told me how you think about yourself, he told me you were scared to disappoint me, to... “

he was obviously stumbling over his words, having a hard time conveying his feelings without even getting his own thoughts straight. He went on praising every aspect of your being, both character and looks, how everything was perfect to him, even though you may not think so yourself. 

He kept on talking, you had no means of interrupting him, too shocked and too surprised, it was the most you ever heard Zoro talk.

“So … y/n… You don’t have to accept my feelings, but do know you mean a lot to me. And that I think you’re wonderful, and pretty, and strong, and even if you don’t return my feelings, I will cut anyone saying otherwise… because… because I care about you… a lot.” 

You could only lean forward, burying your head in his chest, surprising the both of you, as you felt tears well up. It was completely silent as Zoro held you for a while, finally out of words, and you both understood there were no more words that needed to be said.

Edward dragged Isaac into a closet… Again. The self-proclaimed school king had his minions pick on Cross and Nevin mercilessly. Neither one of them had taken the bullying lying down and had gotten into some really bad fights - to the point where both the minions and his friends had been suspended. Cross’s shithead of a father had decided to pull the heterochromatic teen from school entirely - and they were moving to a different city. Nevin’s grandmother was having him and Drew changing schools as occasionally the minions would go after Drew, mistaking the other for Nightmare. “Hey, uhh.. Isaac? I… Uhm… There’s something I want to talk to you about…” Error started.

Ink cut him off, his eyes coldly furious. He’d stopped teasing the other about dragging him into closets months ago, and had done his best to refuse to talk to the bastard after the bullying had intensified. “What do you want now, Quinton?”

“I… Uhm. I’ve been doing some thinking about… Some of the stuff that you’ve said and… Ah…” Error fidgeted again, and Isaac was unsure if the light in the closet was awful or what, but the other seemed to be blushing for some reason. “I… Uhm… I love you. Do you want to go out on a date with me?” He looked hopefully down at the shorter teen.

The sheer nerve of this asshole! Driving his friends away with his minions and trying to isolate him from his friends for this bullshit. “You ruined my life, and now you expect me to love you?!” Some of the other’s’ minions had been planting shit in his locker, which was getting him into trouble with the school administration and his parents. In addition to this, several of the fuckers kept stealing his homework out of his locker and backpack, which was causing his grades to nosedive.

“I… I don’t know what you mean by that?” Error responded, looking wounded and confused “… Ink?”

Sehun exhaled wordless, as they stood close to the big doors, that would always open automatic, if someone wanted to enter or leave this big building. In the half asian’s case, it would be the last time he’d exit this. Coming here in the nearest future, returning there, wasn’t on his mind anymore. He had times, when he disliked this place. When he got tired of the same face, but also of the strangers. When he got tired of his father’s scoldings, his mother’s look of disapproval. But never in his life, he had gotten more tired of anything of this.

Hands were clenched, trembled in anger that he had tried to hold back all the time. The yelling he did before, only was half of what he had felt. Of the aching he had felt in his heart of the rejection of both his parents. At least, so Sehun had thought, his mother would have accepted. Instead, he got this one gaze again. As if she would try to tell him, that this was a ‘bad idea’. As if he was only up to trouble. When he for once wasn’t.

Nearly, he had overheard the words of his boyfriend.

Turned around, to see at his face, but avoided each look into his eyes. Breathed out again. “ I’m sorry it turned out like this... “, he apologized quietly, “ ...I should have known better... but I thought. ‘Hey, they are your parents. There is nothing to lose’. Guess I was wrong with that... “. A frustrated smile appeared on his facial expressions. God, he felt like crying. It was, as if the world would suddenly have decided to crush over him.

she tossed her phone aside, letting it bounce onto the rumpled sheets. all she could think about was the sharp sting of rejection still fresh in her mind, a reminder that the person she wanted - hoped - might finally see her, had looked right through her. Again. And all they had seen was her twin.

It was always like that. She was Latife, yes, but too often it felt like she was just her twin’s sister. The thought made her chest tighten, a hot frustration bubbling up inside her. Her twin with her effortless charm and magnetic presence, had always been the one who turned heads. Latife, although cunning was the quieter one, the one lingering in the background, forgotten in the shadow of someone brighter.

don’t be mistaken she adored her stepsister. She loved her to bits. But being in someone’s shadow was never pleasant. Latife let out a heavy sigh, running a hand through her hair. She craved something different tonight, something more. she wanted to feel desired, feel wanted, to lose herself in the kind of reckless passion she only heard about. She wanted someone to see her for once- not as part of a pair, but as herself.

But the rejection had stung more that she wanted to admit. It made her wonder if she would always be overlooked, always be second place in the race she wasn’t even sure how to run. Was she really that forgettable. Would anyone ever want her, Latife, not just as an afterthought.

The boredom weighed heavier now, but it was more than just boredom. It was loneliness in disguise. Mixed with an aching desire she wasn’t sure to satisfy, maybe tonight she’d just try to drown out the thoughts with some music, or lose herself in a movie. But deep down she knew that what she wanted couldn’t be found in a screen. It was out there somewhere, with someone who would see her, but the question was - how long would she have to wait?

She had enough, she yanked the bedsheets away, brushed her teeth and showed her fabulous self to the crowd.

“Tell the world, Latife Levant is looking for a date - heck if you help me make a decent Tinder profile I’ll pay you 1000 bucks.”

An impulsive essay on queer infighting and isolation from community.

(*There are many LGBTQ+ communities across cultures, here I’m mainly talking about the overarching LGBTQ+ community across the US, not a specific group or organization.)

    The absolute insistence that queer people define themselves in one, somehow communally-agreed upon way is beyond frustrating. The same people praising fluidity, being true to yourself, and expressing who you are freely so often inject rude, assumptive doubts into discussions of identities they know next to nothing about.

    It’s perfectly fine to ask questions, and learn more about the community. What isn’t fine is doing zero research, then entering positive spaces for fellow queer folks, just to be disingenuous and judgemental of everyone there.

    Let me reiterate this one more time: Throwing unfounded doubts onto queer people that differ from you is irresponsible. We are all part of the community in one way or another*, but acting like you have the right to ‘veto’ other peoples’ lived experiences simply because you have a place here is insulting. I’m trying to write this in a calm, fair way; Please, humble yourself. I’m happy to discuss my identities, my thoughts on gender and attraction, and so on! But if you do not have the same experiences as me - and you don’t know if you do when first addressing someone - treating every conversation as a debate is insulting and invalidating.

    I understand the protective instincts of those in queer communities. For many of us, queer spaces are a rare oasis of understanding, of forming relations and memories that otherwise may never have formed. But treating queer people of different experience like a threat perpetuates the same isolation, invalidation, and gatekeeping we all so desperately need an escape from. To be clear, this protective instinct is wonderful for keeping our communities safe, but immediately attacking people on one’s own assumption of a threat does not.

   Part of this behavior is identity policing. Now, I could go on all day about that topic. Policing the language others use for their identity is something I don’t agree with in virtually any circumstance, but here’s the big issue that sticks with me: Those who invalidate others based on their labels, so often equate the invalidation of the word with invalidation of the other person’s queerness.

    When someone’s identity is deemed too complicated, too strange, too vague, not only are their words considered null, so often their status as a LGBTQ+ person is as well. In this event, a person who thought they finally found their way to a community that understands them, a person who let their guard down, sharing some of the most personal and sensitive parts of themselves, is struck. And how can the effects of that be quantified?

    It’s terrifying how often I’ve seen this exact scenario play out, across the years, across websites and in-person spaces. It’s so commonplace, it’s almost become accepted, in a way. By the people who perpetuate the behavior, yes, but also the victims. Being hyper-aware of what you share and where you share (in terms of identity) is standardized, not just in a certain environment, but in the queer community as a whole*.

Focusing in, this pattern of discarding people is what really shakes me.

    The shunning is awful, especially when this behavior in particular is enacted by our own friends and neighbors, our peers. It’s not just about which labels are ‘valid’ or not to me anymore. It’s the fact that queer people, people who face bullying at school, harassment online, rejection from families, abuse in relationships, microaggressions in public, and laws against them in private, are being discarded from the community entirely.
