Oh excellent, this dress has more than generous enough seam allowance to take it out a bit withoutgreatlyalteringthe overallgarment. Almost a three inch deep hem too, which is always nice to see. Love those nice deep hems.

Oh!! That sounds like a great project. I know you don't work this way, but I can probably whip up a couple diagrams of where/how to add panels to resize a garment if you're interested. (You would also have to do the sleeves if you add panels to the sides, fyi)
I have resized one denim jacket just with side panels (and triangular insets to increase the sleeves to the elbow, yeah-- both for my proportional-human arms and also because yeah the sleevehead doesnāt fit otherwise) and then I added an additional box-pleated segment to the back under the collar to make it not tight, but that was a loose, hip-length jacket and I handsewed most of it because my fucking serger was such a bitch the whole time.Ā
but I would LOVE a diagram , I bet thatās the kind of thing a lot of people would find useful and I just donāt have the confidence in my skills to explain my trial-and-error bullshit versions of it. But like, thatās the main ReFatshioning work I need to do, fixing shit that is not big enough, and itās the thing that goes wrong most often when Iām trying to do that kind of shit.
My Sealife jacket set is made from a gifted denim jacket, and a thrifted Pendleton Woolen Mills shirt.
The jacket was a men's size medium and didn't button over my hips. I removed the waist band & collar, and cut slits in the sides. Adding scrap indigo denim from another project to the sides gave me room. I also made a short standing collar with the same fabric. The octopus patch was embroidered on a piece from the original collar & paired with a piece from the shirt. A hanging loop was added to the new collar made from a piece of the old collar fabric
The shirt was discounted at Goodwill to $6 because it had holes in the sleeves and a ripped placket which I mended with patches made from the breast pocket. Embroidered sea stars add to the patches strength and over the place where the pocket formerly resided.
Future plans involve sashiko stitching the indigo insets, adding embroidered waves to the sleeves, and a large octopus to wrap around the back. (This will have to wait for my hand to be up to it, ouch! Too much hand sewing lately)
